It's Only Offensive If Marlee Doesn't Laugh

You might find this in bad taste, and perhaps it is, but it won't stop you from laughing.
During their special, Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show, Seth MacFarlane and Family Guy co-star Alex Borstein felt like poking fun at a rather easy target - Marlee Matlin.
The HIGHlight of the evening was Alex's impression of Marlee singing one of our personal favorites, Poker Face.
Trust us, we were mildly put off too, until Marlee came out to defend herself. Somehow, that made it all okay!

I didn't find it funny - and I love Family Guy and American Dad - the whole show was unnecessary and not particularly original, just a rehash of FG - Seth is much more humorous as a cartoon, he just looked awkward and odd in person…

There still are a few folks out there with a sense of humor. Jokes usually come at someone's expense. But, that doesn't mean the joke should be considered offensive.

Pretty funny, but much like the gags on Family Guy, the joke runs about 3 times as longer even though the laughs stop about 10 seconds in.

well it was funny becasue ofcourse it was set up and they both made fun of each other, so it was all in good fun.
the entire show was waay to censored…why even bother showing it. half the fucking jokes were lost by blurs and "cleveland"….
That was not funny at all, how could you stand in front of an audience and do that? maybe she will have a deaf kid one day and hear that everyday for the rest of her life

As a mother of a 3 year old boy who was born with hearing loss, this actually brought tears to my eyes. Sure, I think Seth MacFarlane is a hoot and laugh at the goofball stuff he does, even when it's at the expense of others, but this hit me in a different way. I sincerely hope that my baby boy never sees this, and/or this does not open any doors of ridiculing a disability like his.

It's good that Marlee has enough confidence to poke fun at herself, but I still didn't like it much. I just don't think it's funny, considering the subject matter. I wouldn't think it evil if others found it to be funny, because people are amused by different things, I just couldn't laugh at something like that.

That was hilarious haha They way Marlee acted so friendly to teach sign language and then turned completely! haha She's so funny. Hey, guys, if Marlee is not offended then why are you? It's so good to see that people can have a sense of humor about themselves. Marlee Matlin is an amazing actress, and she was hilarious last night, I think her appearance was the best part of the show!

What I just love about Marlee is that she can laugh at herself (even when something isn't funny at all). She just takes everything in stride and more people would be happier if they just laughed about things instead of being offended.
Now, I think some of this may have gone to far, but I still think Marlee was amazing!

Feeling sorry for people simply because they have a disability is totally ignorant. Marlee has overcome being deaf and accomplished so much! By going on this special, she was showing people that it's okay to laugh.

It's not offensive because Marlee was included and she seemed to enjoy the whole thing.
It just wasn't funny. I couldn't get past how forced and obvious it all seemed.
That didn't make me laugh at all. I'm glad Marlee Matlin has a great sense of humour, though. My niece is hearing impaired and it makes me sad to think that not only kids but adults can be so socially inept as to think that someone's disability is a huge joke. I'm curious to know what sort of reaction would be given if the joke was geared towards someone with Down's syndrome?
And no, it's not "only" offensive if Marlee doesn't laugh…her speech is not unique to her; it's a characteristic of the hearing disabled. They are not just ridiculing one person here, it's a whole community of people.
You many of you don't understand is that the lack of taste IS the joke.
The situation of Marlee singing is absurd. Choosing a pop song and massacring this way is the set up. Marlee showing up is the forgiving punch line. In a brilliant way, Seth and Alex aren't only making a really funny joke, but capitalizing on it's legitimacy by having Marlee participate.
It's a very high level of communication.

The special wasn't really funny. At all.
I think it's really funny. They weren't being complete asses about it. Marlee was in on it, and she was given the chance to get even. I will say I was a bit uncomfy while they were making fun of Marlee, but once she came out it didn't feel as much like an attack on someone with a disability.
Marlee actually seems really annoyed. Seth isn't funny…and his 'controversial' shows are just crass and crude. He needs a new shtick.

And as for you who is attempting to shield your Deaf son from degrading comments. Here's my suggestion: Don't do that. You'll make things worse for him.
