R.I.P.
Drummer Jerry Fuchs passed away on Sunday morning after a tragic fall down a Brooklyn elevator shaft.
The accident occurred when Fuchs was attending an invite-only benefit in Williamsburg to raise money for women in India.
According to a Building Department spokesman, Jerry and his friend were in the elevator when it stopped on the fifth floor. Both men attempted the jump down, but Fuchs did not make it due to a piece of clothing that got caught, “sending him swinging back into the crevice separating the elevator from the fifth floor.”
Fuchs, who was only 34, was the beloved drummer for indie bands such as !!!, The Juan MacLean, Maserati, Vineland and Turing Machine.
He is survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
Our thoughts are with them.

So it stopped on the 5th floor or in-between the 5th floor and either the 4th or 6th?? Your bad writing makes it sound like the elevator stopped at the 5th floor and these two men then for whatever reason decided to jump out of it! Either way, waiting for assistance would have been a better idea…
This has been a major blow to the Atlanta music scene, he will be greatly missed.

Something is missing here… what 'jump down'? IT seems like you were given incomplete information or do not know what you were told. The paragraph as written does not make any sense.
As usual, Perez gets it wrong. The post is written very confusingly - it says that the elevator stopped at the fifth floor and that Jerry Fucks did not make the 'jump down'. Jump down to where? Makes no sense. Turns out that the elevator stopped BETWEEN the fouth and fifth floors and Fuchs was trying to get to the fourth floor. Would be nice if the people who write these posts actually knew what they were talking about and proofed their work first.
That's absolutely tragic =( RIP.

I'm guessing that the elevator stopped between two floors? A friend of mine from college did the same thing (in our dorm) but survived the fall…three floors. It happens, no need to call the guy a jerk or an idiot.
RIP! Hate to say it but I got caught between floors in a doctors building. I was 5 months pregnant! I forced the doors open and was between floors. People kept telling me that would catch me. Being 5'8 helps. And i was not heavy. I made the jump! But to this day i cannot and will not get on an elevator by myself. It is sheer terror! Guess i was lucky. God bless his soul. Prayers to his family.

So the elevator got stuck in between the 5th and 6th floor and they saw the opening for the 5th floor and so they jumped thinking they would land in the spot that the elevator door usually is when it stops on a floor and the one guy made it and they this guy didn't because his clothing got stuck. Am I understanding this right? This has got to be one of the weirdest ways to die. Its something that usually would only happen in a movie or people think this will happen to them and so their afraid of elevators but in reality and never does…except occasionally. I have so say, I HATE elevators, especially the ones in old buildings that make weird creaking sounds as they go down. I have to say the most scariest elevator experince is going on one in a hospitial late at night when the lights are being all weird and its all quiet and hardly anybodys in the hospitial. RIP, so sad.

What a horrible thing to have happen. My Grandmother, on my Mother's side, was riding the bus & exiting via the back door when her fur coat was caught in the doors & she was dragged her to her death. She had gone to buy a doll for my Mom who was 2 yrs. old. @ the time. Tragedy has touched our lives in many ways. To his Parents & Family, I pray that God will comfort you & give you the strength you need to make it through this most difficult & painful time.

Jerry was the sweetest thing. him and the rest of the maserati gang spent some time at a friends house after the show in san antonio,tx. he wil be missed!

This was a horrible tragedy and my thoughts go out to the family. I am a friend of the family and I know this has been extremely hard on them. I've heard only good things about Jerry and I know he will be missed.

Re: star_brite – I think the point tom951 was trying to make is that is was a bit stupid of him to jump across as it was a dangerous thing to do (obviously), why didn't he just wait for the elevator to work again like most people would.
So yes I agree it is sad, especially for his family & friends but still not a very bright thing to do.
