Madonna Wanted To Make Precious

preciousposter_oprahwinfrey.jpg

It's one of the most talked about movies of the year and, no doubt, everyone is wondering how Precious didn't make it to the screen sooner.

Well, it would have, if Madonna had had her way!

Yes, Madonna was eager to make author Sapphire's novel Push, which was renamed Precious, into a major motion picture. And she wasn't alone, the author recalls:

"There was this really earnest college student who wanted to do his first film. Then Madonna wanted to produce it. I was like, 'Madonna? Idon't think this is her film.' Then I remember this one producer told me that he had found Precious - And it was going to be Brandy. Excuse me? I literally almost hung up on him."

A diss for Madonna AND Brandy? We'll admit, the shut down for Brandy is well deserved (this isn't a Lifetime movie afterall), but it would have been interesting to see where Madonna would have taken the film.

But then again, Oprah seems the most logical choice. We think she made the might decision in waiting.

Have any of U seen the flick? Thoughts?

      firstttt

    2. 2

No, it doesn't hit all cities for a couple of weeks but it looks like it will be really good. I hear there's gonna be Oscar buzz for Mo'nique and the girl that plays Precious. Awe-some.

    3. 3

if you wernt such an asslicker you'd realise that the only place ma(n)donna takes a film is to the gutter lol . . .

    4. 4

Madonna + Films = NO NO NO

    5. 5

THIS IS OLD NEWS, MADONNA BRIEFLY WANTED TO PRODUCE IT, BUT ONCE SHE GOT RID OF MAVERICK FILMS ALL FELL THROUGH. BESIDES THIS BOOK HAS BEEN OUT FOR A WHILE, I'M VERY SURPRISED HOW OPRAH & TYLER PERRY ARE TRYING TO GET ALL THE CREDIT FOR IT, THEY DIDN'T ACT IN IT OR WRITE IT, AND OPRAH BEING INVOLVED DOES NOT MEAN GOOD THINGS, DOES ANYONE REMEMBER "BELOVED", THAT WAS A GREAT BOOK THAT OPRAH MANAGED TO TURN INTO A BIG PILE OF CRAP!!!!

    6. 6

      Hell no.
      Madonna would have ruined it.
It turned out just perfect with Oprah and Tyler Perry.
If this does not win tons of Oscars, something is very wrong.

    7. 7

Madonna barely became a credible singer after 25 years. (She is a fine dancer, though.)
She has plenty to spend, but, please, all her attempts at becoming a credible actress have been for naught.

    8. 8

Madonna's overall track record in regard to films speaks to where the film would have gone…..down! The only film she did well with was a musical. She should stick to music.

    9. 9

Madonna has no business in film…like none, and nobody bring up Evita because it was minimal acting and all singing.

    10. 10

This is Lee Daniels movie…..this movie was finished before Oprah or Tyler ever got involved!!!!!!!!! As for the movie, I agree with the reviewer that called it "TRAGICALLY BEAUTIFUL"

    11. 11

Oprah only jumped in at the last minute to finance the distribution. The movie production was not her idea to begin with. The movie had already been made before the producers invited her to jump in the project.

    12. 12

Stop being an ass lick Perez. Your kissing up to Mandonna is getting tired and she probably dislikes you as everyone else does. Brandy has been more successful as an actress than Madonna.

    13. 13

No, Perez, it would NOT have been interesting to see where Madonna would have taken the film. She has ruined EVERY movie project she has ever been involved with.

Quit kissing her ass you fucking moron. The book ended up being where it was meant to be, so STFU Perez!

    14. 14

who's decision was it to put mariah in it cuz her track record with acting is incredible and all……..

    15. 15

      Madonna(producing) +Mariah (acting) ???????????

      NO FUCK*** WAY!

    16. 16

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – Mariah is good friends with Lee Daniel's, I think he's the director and he saw Mariah in that movie "Wisegirl's" and liked her so decided to give it a shot. Everyone is saying that Mariah is excellent in this film, even talk of an Oscar.

    17. jham says – reply to this

      17

Well I'll tell ya one thing, and I'm Team Madonna, but if Madonna and Mariah were in competition before, Madonna will not be pleased w/ Mariah's STELLAR acting performance in this movie. WOW!

    18. 18

Thank God this terrible thing called Madonna did not TOUCH this movie……….i probably would not want to see it if she did, and thats real. Oprah and TP were definitely the best for this. MADONNA SUCKS

    19. 19

      lol thats cool

    20. 20

      MADONNA SHOULD GO FUCK HERSELF.

    21. 21

Madonna may have won a Golden Globe, but she is no Streisand when it comes to making films. I don't think she would have understood the sensibilities of the characters in this movie. BTW, Perez, why didn't you mention the film's stellar box office performance this past weekend while in limited release? Is it because Mariah Carey's in it?

    22. 22

And Madonna wanted to play Precious! I got it! Madonna Can not act! she does the same sorry old moves in her videos! She thinks shes still in the Like a virgin video! Damn she needs to hire a dance instructor! she has enough money!

    23. 23

Re: SexyScorpio..NY – I'd be surprised and appalled if the academy would give a shitty singer trying to act an oscar……..nom's are one thing, winning's a whole other category…….then again three 6 mafia did win a grammy for a song about hoes and pimps………..

    24. 24

Why do you say it would have been interesting to see where Madonna would have taken the film? Madonna has no instincts outside the music world, and her instincs there aren't firing on all cylinders lately. She would have turned the film into a Kabballah advertisement and put herself in as the star.

    25. 25

MADONNA NEEDS TO RETIRE! THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO LIKE HER ARE OLD QUEENS! LIKE PEREZ!

    26. 26

I am happy that Sapphire rejected Madonna's offer. She clearly has ruined so many other movies in the past and should just stick with singing. She just wants to be a part of trendy things and has no understanding of the urban experience.

    27. 27

      '
      '
madonna's work in film making is dismal at best- the author knew she would have clusterfucked it.
      '
      '
      '

    28. 28

I wouldn't want to see this gutter trash movie, if I got the dvd for free :(
      .
The ONLY reason anyone is even talking about this horse shit is because Saint Oprah is involved.
      .

    29. 29

The film was amazing, it was beautiful and emotional and tragic and funny and everything that life is. The acting was great as well. It was cast perfectly and if it does not get at least one Oscar nomination than something is wrong.

    30. 30

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – I'd be even more shocked. After that movie Glitter, that's a real turn around. Im sure Mariah would go to the Oscar's with her enormous tit's sticking out of a short, tight dress that only a 20 year old show wear.

    31. 31

Madonna should stick to what she does best…fornicating with younger guys!

    32. 32

i'm so glad that didn't work. no offense to madonna or brandy, but i can't imagine them doing this movie justice. this movie was really good, if they would've been involved it would've been a huge failure.

    33. 33

Re: SexyScorpio..NY – wisegirls was dope. it's so funny how people crucified her for glitter, but didn't even acknowledge how good she was in that and they came out around the same time.

    34. 34

Madonna and movies should never be in the same sentence…

    35. 35

MARIAH IS OVERRATED. WHY IS SHE THERE ANYWAY? 3 FRIGGIN SCENES AND SHE'S THE MARKETING PLOY OF LEE DANIELS. SMFH.

    37. 37

"I literally almost hung up" wtf? I literally almost threw up at that nonsensical quote douchebaggery.

    38. 38

madonna wouldn't have done this movie any justice.
i don't think she'd really have the vision for it.
      glad she didn't do it.

    41. 41

Madonna, HANG IT UP! Your talents lie in the music and sex fields, not in movies.

    42. 42

Once again society and media has done a great job of making white people feel "that" much better about themelves all the while the FAT UGLY MAMMY PROBLEM RIDDEN Black woman remains the center of attention to make White females too feel "that" much better about themselves.

i notice the only Black films white people love and praise are ones that show BLACK WOMEN as tragic, fat, uneducatecd and problem ridden. That's because at the end od the day it makes you feel better about being White when you see films like this.

These kinds of films are NO MISTAKE. If this were some Black film about attractive, thin , progressive Black women no Whitey (especially white woman) would see it.

I am so sick of these stupid degrading images of Black women. All just to keep White women feeling better about themselves. I am convinced society needs to uphold this image of the fat mammy Black women so others can feel better about themselves. SAD!

Keeo it up. Like all things eventually the walls come down and the truth becomes known. And karma is sitting and waiting to come back and kick everyone in the azz who keeps upholding this. The only way a White woman can feel good about herself is by constantly being shown stereotypica, negative images of another race of woman. HOW PATHETIC!

    43. 43

They got the fattest most ugliest Black women to play in the role of abuser and victim. I bet you white women are eating this ishh up aren't you. That's why the whities are shrilling with delight at this film and EEEVEN going so far as to give it Oscar buzz. Also, note that the only "normal" people in the film who are the supposed saviors of the tragic fat ugly dark black women are all bi racial. LOL. Can this film be anymore OBVIOUSLY racist?????????? Unbelivable!

    44. 44

O is the best choice because Brandy is wack, she doesnt even fit the description of precious and Madonna woulda been wack too! She doesnt know what its like to grow up poor and black and more than that its the culture of how Precious grew up and I think O is (not in a bad way) but old enough and obviously knows african american culture and the previews for this look amazing. the only other option i would have went with would of been the independent film student but who knows what happens when you do that.

    45. 45

"it would have been interesting to see where Madonna would have taken the film."
You Fucking nutcase… Damn, as if Madonna could do no wrong.
      * * *
MADONNA IS BOX OFFICE POISON. She would have DESTROYED THIS PROJECT. You are so obsessed with that Zombie-Handed Hag.

    46. 46

hahahah have you seen a madonna film? hahaha

    47. 47

Well dayum BlkBty tells us how you really feel….
I am reading the book now… and have yet to see the movie. I disagree that the young lady that plays precious is the "MOST UGLY, FAT, BLACK WOMAN" you could be pretty, skinny, black, white or whatever and sitll be the worst UGLY!… Her name is precious not becuase of her looks, she is precious becuase she was abused from day one, by her mother, her father and society, everyone failed her.
It has nothing to do with race.. it has to do with how we treat eachother….
Ugh. never mind. not even worth arguing about race with someone that is clearly racist…

I can't wait to see the movie.. and good that Madonna was not involved and that a real director made it and will hopefully will be recognized its work and meaning.

    48. 48

Don't be stupid, Perez! Madonna knows nothing about black people, culture, history, or experience in America. Indeed, she would have made a joke out of this classic piece of literature. On the other hand, Sapphire, did praise Mariah for her performance. Sapphire, Daniels, Winphrey…this is the realm of the living American legends, what does Madonna have to do with it? Even suburbia doesn't embrace her, why would any other?

    49. Ninka says – reply to this

      49

Blk Beauty does not speak for all Black People. The movie was a great adaptation of the book, "Push" by an author named Sapphire. I urge you all to read it. This is not just the story of an Fat, Black uneducated girl, it is the story of all who have been abused with no hope of a normal future. People should stop reducing everything to being racially motivated. The characters were perfect for the parts, but most of all, they all put everyting they had into their parts. Some people look for the bad in everything. Maybe, "Blk Beauty" you should read the book.

    50. 50

Re: Blk Beauty – Isnt Sapphire black? If she had any problems with the way the film was being put together, Im sure she would have spoken up. It's written by a black woman so I dont see what the problem is. Every actor, black and white, were cast perfectly.

    51. 51

I saw the movie & it was sooooo good omg I cried like a baby @ points in this film - now with that being said madonna would not have fitted into this movie @ all mostly b'cuz HER OLD ASS CAN'T ACT!!!

    52. 52

Also… shockingly Mariah did a good job.

    53. 53

i've read this book and can't wait to see the movie! when is it being released nation wide? right now its only playing in like 3 places. 2 in LA and 1 in New York.

    54. 54

skinny, pretty brandy as precious? errr, not sure how that would work. and to be honest people would label madonna as the kiss of death to any film but theyd have said the same about mariah up until this film

    55. 55

Re: Blk Beauty – wow, self-hate much?

    56. 56

Re: Blk Beauty – Black Beauty…your name is so FRIGGIN' WRONG!!! I am so SICK of folks making a blanket template about BLACK FOLKS!!! This is a tragic story…and if ANYONE WHO KNOWS THE OSCARS BASED ON THE LAST 30 YEARS…make a tragic story…win an Oscar…the reason why this planet is SO "F'D" UP…is because of folks with YOUR MINDSET!!!

    57. 57

Oprah & Perry jumped on the film AFTER IT WAS FINISHED!!!! Give credit where it's due please. The author liked the director. Orpah, Perry has NOTHING to do with this film.

    58. 58

      OOO SHIT BURN! LOL

    59. 59

      Re: Blk Beauty
Um…. the black female author had many offers to have the parts played by attractive black women (for example, Brandy), but the black female author held out for someone who looked the part of the character that she wrote. The teacher, IMO should look more the part of the teacher in the book, but before Oprah and Perry jumped on this was an extremely low-budget production and they found fabulous actors under those circumstances. Moreover, the teacher a lesbian.

This book is based on real people. Would you rather the author hide the whole truth, no doubt "to make whiteys feel better about themselves"? She's telling real stories, based on real people. This isn't some contrived Oscar bait, so chill out.

And for the record, I know lots of white people who would happily watch, listen to, vote for, celebrate strong black women. They aren't all bad you know.

    60. 60

Madonna would have ruined the movie.

    61. 61

Madonna should stay away from movies for ever. Even a huge fan of hers would realise this.

    62. 62

It's a damn good thing Madonna didn't have anything to do with this film - she would have ruined it!

    63. 63

Saw this movie on Sunday, it was really good, gritty, heartwarming, depressing, and scary. I unfortunately got my wallet stolen during this movie, so it kind of reminds me of somethign bad, but other than that experience it was a really good movie.

    64. 64

Re: Blk Beauty – I feel so bad for you.

    65. 65

Cannot WAIT to see this film! Unfortunately I won't be seeing it until it comes to a theater closer to home on the 20th. Soooo fortunate that Madonna had nothing to do with the movie.

    66. 66

      Grandma can't ACT!

    67. 67

thief. this movie poster is a direct copy of lanny sommese's 1987 rape line poster. google it.

    68. 68

Re: Blk Beauty – The film is based on a book called "Push". Don't talk out of you ass. They wanted actors who fit the bill of the characters, and it only gets Oscar buzz if its any good, and in this case, it is.

    69. 69

Madonna would have screwed it up royally.

    70. 70

I have not seen the movie but I read the book and it is incredible! Is so heartwrenching.

    71. 71

      Re: Blk Beauty

I will have to agree with you. Unlike Hill Harper, Saint Oprah loves to portray women of color in less than flattering roles. I am a Black woman. I work out five days a week. I'm educated. I'm NOT on welfare. I'm in my thirties and have NO children. Saint Oprah needs to take lessons from producers/screenwriters Mara Brock Akil, and writers like Hill Harper who portray minorities in more of a positive image. I REFUSE to see or support this film!

    72. 72

      Re: Ninka

You seem to know very little about cinemography and how minorities are portrayed in films. Read your history on theater. I'm sure 'Push' was a great book. So was 'Beloved' by Toni Morrison, and Oprah as usual, saw it as a golden opportunity to sensationlize the main character in a less than flattering role, as she does with Black Women in all her films.

    73. 73

Re: Blk Beauty – u r damn f… stupid!!!!! first of all u r the racist and illiterate. Why do white women and BTW i am an african male myself need to see fat black mamas to feel better about themselfs. makes no sence what u write and u repeat urself 10 times in 1 comment. so please shut the fuck up u dumb as bitch, u r an insult for our race!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW the movie was great because it was believeable and it could have been white or black or even yellow….the story is just sad and touching and promising at the same time…. GOOD WORK

    74. 74

Authors/Writers do not have much influence on how the movies are portrayed {unless you're doing an 'indie' film}. When the producers sense a Blockbuster hit, everything changes. Including how the characters are portrayed. Debbie Allen had that problem with Steven Spielberg in the making of 'Amistad'. Erin Brockervich did not want Julia Roberts to portray her in the film. But the director knew casting Julia to play the role was going to secure a blockbuster hit. Wake up America!

    75. 75

      Re: alipas

…And I'm sure you're content with the way young African-American men are portrayed in the media….

    76. 76

In the movie "Black Snake Moan," Christina Ricci's character was also sexually abused. Many people were outraged about the content of the film. No one wanted to see a Caucasian woman chained up by a Black man. They discredited the movie prior to even seeing it. Lets be realistic, America. Sometimes we are ALL gulity of our own hidden prejudices.

    77. 77

Madonna would have been a great producer

    78. 78

This movie is so fucking good. It is the wrong flick for Madge to do, but whoever hates on Mariah… There was no mark of "Glitter" in this movie… so effin good.
