So Brave! Woman Mauled By 200lb Chimp Reveals Her Face On Oprah!

| Filed under: Oprah WinfreySad Sad

Charla Nash's life forever changed last February when she visited a friend's home in Connecticut and was attacked by the person's 200lb pet chimpanzee. In the horrific accident, the animal ripped the poor woman's face apart, leaving her with no nose, no lips, and no eyes.

Today, for the first time, she speaks on The Oprah Winfrey Show about the terrible ordeal. It is amazing to hear her story and remarkable that despite the terrible adversity she has had to overcome, she can still remain so upbeat.

Charla, who permanently lives in a hospital in Cleveland, isn't aware of the full extent of her injuries, as she won't often feel her face and asks others not to describe them to her. She drinks all of her meals through a small hole where her mouth used to be, and while it seems impossible, Charla hopes for the day that she can have "a hot dog or piece of pizza."

The doctor who treated Charla when she was first brought into the emergency room explains that paramedics on the scene said her hands looked like they had gone through meat grinders and that her fingers were thrown about the room. He goes on to say:

"The monkey had ripped off her entire upper jaw, had ripped off her nose, which as hanging by a thread. We found extensive dirt, chimp fur, and chimp teeth implanted in her bone."

Though Charla can't remember exactly what happened the morning she lost her face to this animal, the chilling 911 call from her friend, Herold, paints a devastating picture. The woman screams into the phone that the animal is "eating" her friend and begs the operator to send the police to shoot the chimp.

Now, as she spends her days about the hospital, her face veiled as to not "scare" other people, she relishes in the small moments she gets to spend with her 17-year-old daughter and hopes that one day, she might receive a face and hand transplant.

Wow. So brave.

It's one of the most heartbreaking stories we have ever read and to see and hear how brave this woman is is truly inspiring. We just hope there comes a day where she can get back to a normal life. She deserves that much, considering what she has been through.

no words can describe how horrific this is poor woman

  2. 2

OMG! my heart goes out to that woman… her story is moving and if i tried, i could be brought to tears! :(

  3. 3

Wow, wish I was this brave.. Prayers sent to you and your family.

  4. 4

Dude that sucks. =[ I always knew chimps were evil.

  5. 5

    omg, thats so sad!

  6. 6

    what a survivor.

  7. 7

    Oh wow

  8. 8

  9. 9

Oh my Godness, poor woman, she definantly deserves to get a face transplant, her face is not even a face, so unrecognizable, poor women, a lot of us always complain about having small scars or stupid things like stretch marks and this woman doesn't even have a face anymore, I will have her in my prayers!

  10. 10

    wow that is terrible..

  11. 11

Oh God. That is so sad. And here the rest of us are, all consumed with vanity, nose jobs, botox, facelifts, boob jobs, tummy tucks, etc. Maybe we should all be thankful for what God has given us.

  12. 12

  13. 13

she is a true survivor. God bless her !

  14. 14

Poor thing. She was trying to be nice to an animal and this is what aspired. We can't predict what a wild animal will do. Remember the person in San Fran who was attacked by neighbor dogs.

  15. 15

    Dear lord.

  16. 16

This is EXACTLY the reason why people shouldn't keep wild animals as pets!

  17. 17

That hurts to look at. I cant believe people are allowed to keep such a dangerous animal as a pet. What the hell did the owner expect!? DAMN!

  18. 18

My heart breaks for her. I hope one day, she will get her face transplant and live a more normal life.
Wild animals are WILD!! They should not be kept as pets.

  19. 19

    I'm sending a x & o to this poor darling…& here's another x & o for her daughter

This is why wild animals should not be kept as pets!

  21. 21

To be honest, I would have killed myself had that happened to me. I'm sorry, but I am just way too vain.

  22. ap076 says – reply to this

This is so sad, she still even has a trach tube (? permanent) in place. Hopefully modern medical science will be able to perform other miracles for her (the first was her survival).
Wild animals are under no circumstances to be keep as pets. It is not fair to the animal or to the humans put in danger by them. Even MJ had to get rid of bubbles because of age, behavior, strength issues.

  23. 23

    wow, tough

  24. 24

I am speechless and wish all the best for this woman and hope GOD will help her go trough this horrific ordeal.

  25. 25

My gosh, I was afraid to look at her picture under the cut. May God Bless that poor woman. I hope she can get a face transplant. Makes you appreciate the little things in life a little more…

  26. 26

    I'd rather be dead

  27. 27

    There are no words…

  28. 28

WOW! you forgot to mention that she is trying to sue the city for 150 million dollars for letting the chimp live in a home. Which i dont understand, she still chose to run over and help her friend, that was her decision. BAD CHOICE! I feel for her. Hopefully she can get that face transplant.

  29. 29

  30. 30

Oh my god, thats beyond horrific. People should never keep wild animals as pets. That poor womans life is ruined.

  31. 31

so sad..wish her all the best.

  32. 32

jones19, that's exactly what I was going to say. This woman is proof as to why wild animals do not belong in someone's home.

My thoughts and condolences are with this woman, I couldn't even imagine having to go through life the way she does now. She is an example of bravery and survival.

  33. 33

That poor woman. My heart goes out to her.

  34. 34

This poor woman, but I miss the relevance to Veterans day. I understand the first segment of oprah's show, but the second segment, (huh) someone on Oprah's staff dropped the ball for the Vets on Veterans day

  35. 35

i got teary eyed when i saw her picture. my heart goes out to her and her loved ones. makes me feel like a piece of shit for wanting the bump removed in my nose. she's an incredible inspiration. i wish great things for her.

  36. 36

Poor woman and POOR CHIMP - they should not be used as domestic pets and treated like CHILDREN. This lady's 'friend' has alot to answer for - wasn't she giving the chimp anti-depressants prescribed for humans because he was 'depressed' ? I read somewhere at the time that this contributed to the animal's aggressive behaviour.

  37. 37

  38. 38

oh god this is just so sad. this woman is in my prayers.

  39. 39

Dear Charla, you are a brave soul. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

  40. 40

Yeah….So brave that she's suing the state of connecticut for $150 million dollars. Such a brave lady.

  41. 41

I can't imagine. My heart breaks for her.

  42. 42

how horrific…but these face transplants could be something incredible to let people have a chance again…

  43. 43

    Wow. She's stronger than I. She's a surviver.

  44. 44

    omg =(

  45. 45

She is wonderful and so brave i only wish i was like her..God bless her and her daughter

  46. 46

Of course Perez had to slap a pic up. That shows little respect you have.

  47. 47

It's interesting that she can remain positive when she's so disfigured. Looks don't mean anything people. It's what's in the mind that counts.

  48. 48

okay people…stop bitching about your sh*tty life.

I think this is what is called "radical perspective."

  49. 49

Oh my goodness, that poor poor woman. She is in my prayers. I feel no sympathy for the owner of the chimp.

  50. 50

I didn't need to see that. can u say: NO monkeys as PETS?

  51. 51

Re: ememememe – YOUR MOTHER IS FUNNY

  52. 52

Re: ememememe – You are the biggest peice of shit on the face of the earth for laughing…. karma karma karma your way you fuck head!!!!!!!

  53. 53

Why can you even own a pet chimp? Besides that it can obviously be very dangerous and harmful, I do not think that a private person can care for it properly. A chimp is not a pet!
This woman is so brave, I don´t think I could be like her.

  54. 54

That's so sad, poor woman :(

  55. 55

Re: ememememe – you are a terrible person.

  56. 56

I not only feel bad for what happened to her face, but it also breaks my heart to know that the doctors had to remove her eyes. Good God, she'll never see her daughter grow into a beautiful woman, she won't be able to look at her grandkids in the eyes, she won't be able to appreciate the beauty of a flower or look up to the blue sky. Boy do we ever take things for granted! My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

BTW, does anybody know what happened to animal that attacked her?

  57. 57

Re: ememememe – We should put you in a cage with that chimp and let him rip YOUR face off….see if you find it funny then!!!!

  58. 58

Re: ememememe – shut the fuck up you ignorant little kid.

  59. 59

wow words can't even explain how horrible that is, I feel so bad for her and I pray that one day they'll have surgery avaible to help her God bless her and her daughter, poor woman.

  60. 60

    God bless this woman.

  61. 61

    oh. my. GOD. poor woman!!!

  62. 62

OMG!!! That poor poor woman. I'm so glad she can't remember what happened. I never would want to hear that 911 call. The story alone is so frightening I can't even imagine. How tramautic. My heart definitely goes out to her. She is so brave to come on national television.

… I know it's animal instinct but how strange for the chimp to suddenly VICIOUSLY attack her after being a pet for so many years.

  63. 63

the moment i saw this image it brought me to tears. this is just a horrible thing. it should be illegal everywhere for people to have wild animals as pets. no matter how house trained they may think they are. no one should have to go through this. my heart goes out to this women and her family!

  64. 64

    I'd hit it

  65. 65

Although I understand that this story was posted with the good intention of showing the bravery of this woman, I really don't think that it should be posted. Oprah's interview explained that Charla Nash did not want this to become a source of paparazzi stories. I feel that now the story is released, this is not something that should stay up on the site. I know she's getting stronger, but I'm sure this is not a picture that her family wants on the internet for the rest of her life.

  66. 66

God bless her. thats so sad.

  67. 67

Ok, this is super sad and I hate to say it, but this could of been avoided 100%.
Why on Earth would someone keep a 200LBS WILD ANIMAL as a pet?
Wild animals belong in the wild, Chimps haven't had thousands of years of evolutionary domestication like cats and dogs….they're wild animals, and they should either be in the wild or if they're rescued or something there are animal santuaries where trained staff can provide proper care and a proper enviorment for the animals.
I really hope this tragedy educates people on the danger of keeping wild animals as pets so that this never happens to anyone again.
Keeping wild animals as pets is not only dangerous to the home owner, neighbors amd other pets but its also super unfair to the animals. They deserve to live in their homes and we can live in ours.

  68. 68

I will never understand why people think its okay to keep wild animals like, chimps, snakes etc as pets. I just dont get it. Not to mention it really is another form of animal cruelty.

  69. 69

Re: ememememe – You're awful. You would not be laughing if this happened to you.
The poor thing. My heart goes out to her :(

  70. 70

This woman is an idiot. She deserved all that happen to her. But they really should put her to sleep.

  71. 71

Re: Alliestp – I heard she was suing the owner of the chimp for 50 mil. Regardless, I would be suing all sorts of people is this shit happend to me, just saying. Does CT allow people to keep exotic animals as pets?

  72. 72

    chimps are dumb

  73. 73

OMG thats horrid. I just started crying literally. I can't even imagine…

  74. 74

Re: ememememe – you're obviously asking for it … not surprised someone like you would post an insensitive comment like that.

  75. 75

Can't imagine going through something as horrific as that.
    Bless her and her daughter.

  76. 76

Re: Willow024 – Exactly! And I love your avatar, Sophia rocks:)

  77. 77

Re: tom951 – Why is this woman an idiot? It wasnt HER chimp, it was her friends. That being said, if my friend had a chimp, I would NEVER EVER visit their home.

  78. 78

    poor woman, god bless her.

  79. 79

    Re: ememememe

You need to step back and take a good long look at what kind of person
    you are.

  80. 80

    My jaw just literally dropped

  81. 81

    holy shitz.

  82. 82

  83. 83

    wow that is just sad

  84. 84

  85. 85

This is so sick & demented. WHY oh WHY go on Oprah with this face? Yes it was a stupid tragedy (though one has to question the intelligence of having a wild animal in one's home and then also having guests over) but to show it on TV? She maybe needs money for her care or something. Someone get her a face transplant pronto.

  86. 86

    shes so brave

  87. 87

Omg, No one deserves to go through that! :( I don't think I could ever be as brave as her. I hope she gets the face and hand transplant she wants!

  88. 88

Okay having a chimp for a pet, stupip.Id be jumping off a bridge if I look like that, thats not living. Its impossible to eat ,shit kill me now

  89. 89

Yes, this is what true bravery is! Not Rihanna! Let me see how brave she is after a chimpanzee attacks her. Rihanna is still pretty. (To some, but not to me! She's Fugly!!) this woman shows what true bravery is!! How horrific for her and her family!

  90. 90

Fuck it. Give up. No way for a life at this time unless for purely intellectual pursuits.

  91. 91

Poor poor woman. So brave. God bless her.

  92. 92

I will keep you in my prayers… be strong

  93. 93

she is so brave.i cant even begin to express how sad this is.

  94. 94

How beautiful of a woman to stay so strong. It really made me cry. Only a true angel can hold on through all of that.

  95. 95

It's sad that this is the result of what happened to her, but seriously it is not perfectly normal to be around a chimpanzee or any wild animal for that matter. I don't even go near dogs because I am scared to death of them biting me, it just seems to me like common sense would be like UM, sorry, I can't be comin to visit with a chimp in your house…even it the damn thing was on a leash or whatever they are strong….what's just as stupid is this woman's picture bein on this website…..

  96. 96

Thank God, truly thank God, that she was in the old America where she had access to great health care to save her life. Under the proposed system, she'd not be this lucky. And is it luck? I don't know. She's a survivor and fought for her life. It's her right to make that decision, not the government's. I hope she is eligible for a face transplant but she'll never regain her vision.

  97. 97

My God.. she is brave.. Such a terrible terrible thing to happen… I send prayers of love and recovery to her and her family. Stay strong mama!

  98. 98

What has occurred to this woman is tragic. But I think it is important to learn from such a horrific event. Chimpanzees share 98% of the same DNA as humans. They cry, they get scared, they get angry and they feel joy. And most importantly, they remember. Imagine being forced to live in a cage everyday. Being forced to take pills. Being forced to live a life that does not come natural. Chimpanzees in captivity live at least 40 yrs, if not longer. Can you imagine 40 yrs of such a life?

The chimpanzees you see in movies and commercials are babies. Babies that were taken from their mothers at birth. Once they hit the age of 8, they become agressive b/c they have hit sexual maturity. Their natural instincts kick in and then they are denied (and punished) for what comes natural to them. Is there any wonder that this horrific episode occurred?

We as a society can make a difference. Do not support films or products that use primates. Do not support circuses. And especially, do not support breeders of exotic animals. Write a letter to your representative about having laws passed to make it illegal. Support organizations such as www.savethechimps.org . Lets make sure that nobody else has to suffer like Charla.

  99. 99

Why the fuck do people think they can own exotic pets without repercussions? It's a wild animal. It's not a baby. It belongs in the jungle, not your living room. What a fucking idiot her friend is!

  100. 100

    this is so sad.
i truly wish all the best for her
