Shame On You Catholic Church of D.C.! Shame!

This is truly despicable!

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington D.C. is threatening to discontinue the social service programs it runs in the District if the city doesn't change their proposed same-sex marriage law.

The Catholic Charities serves 68,000 people in the District with adoption, homelessness and healthcare! All of those people who need help would be affected by this irrational decision!

The same-sex marriage bill in question would NOT require religious organizations to perform or have their facilities used for same-sex weddings, but they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.

Apparently they're upset that they could potentially have to provide employee benefits to same-sex married couples!

Are you fucking kidding us?

Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the archdiocese says:

"If the city requires this, we can't do it. The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that's really a problem."

Hatred and disrespect are the real problems, lady!

Luckily the bill seems to have unwavering support from key D.C. Council members as some have said the church is being "somewhat childish" and another saying that "they [the church] don't represent, in my mind, an indispensable component of our social services infrastructure" and also the council "will not legislate based on threats."

GREAT attitudes!

Discrimination is not right! If they don't like the new law then it appears the District will sever their relationship with the Catholic Charities and they will no longer receive public funding.

As Peter Rosenstein of the Campaign for All D.C. Families said, "The issue here is they are using public funds, and to allow people to discriminate with public money is unacceptable."

It IS unacceptable! Think of the people you would be hurting based on your selfishness and hatred. Councilwoman Mary Cheh sums it up well:

"Are they really going to harm people because they have a philosophical disagreement with us on one issue? I hope, in the silver light of day, when this passes, because it will pass, they will not really act on this threat."

Hear, hear!

When are you going to learn that not everyone agrees with YOU Perez???

    3. 3

At least the Catholic church is finally doing something right!

    4. 4

As a catholic this is embarssing. You know the bible also speaks about tolerance. To threaten people like this unless they get their way is wrong. They should feel embarssed.

    5. 5

Ok, so, what do you mean "hatred and disrespect"? They NEVER said they "hated" the gay community nor were they disrespectful. You are being disrespectful bc you are not respecting the fact that they "Catholic Charities" still have rules that go by…bibilicly! Whether you agree with them or not…it is THEIR money! And whether they like if or not…you're gay…right?! So, you're not any better by condemning their beliefs. Just they are doing to you. In the bible…God says that homesexuality is an abomination! Now, don't get me wrong, I pass NO judgement. I luv you gays personally! But, everyone has their points of view, you cannot put words in their mouth though by saying they are "hateful and disrepsectful". Poor choice of words.

*~* SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE *~* Religious fanatics is clearly what is wrong with the WORLD !!!!!!!!!!!! … Take Al-Qaeda; RELIGIOUS fanatics in a different religion. ONE IN THE SAME RIGHT??

    12. 12

Time to tax the churches !!

    13. 13

Um, ALL churches should be getting PRIVATE funding anyway (congregant donations, that is), NOT public (taxpayer) money. Last I checked they are supposed to be a 501(c) NON PROFIT organization. Besides, aren't they supposed to take a vow of poverty and be a self-supporting, privately funded institution instead of depending on FED TIES for a portion of the financial support for their charities? Either BE TAXED FOR ACTING LIKE A BUSINESS and stop preaching to the government on the democratic process OR get severed by the city, but you can't have BOTH!

    14. 14

"If the city requires this, we can't do it. The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that's really a problem."

EVERY SINGLE SOCIETY THAT HAS NOT HAD A SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE HAS FAILED TERRIBLY. THIS IS NOT ONLY APPLICABLE TO THE GAY MARRIAGE ACT. IF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH WANTS TO STOP HELPING PEOPLE BECAUSE OF THE GOVERNMENTS POSITION ON A LIFE STYLE POINT THEY CAN GO AHEAD. BUT KNOW THAT GOD IS LOOKING DOWN ON YOU LIKE HE DID ON CAIN WHEN HE GAVE HIM A BLEAK OFFERING.

    15. 15

Its their money, they can do with it whatever they want, hell they have gay priests and pedophiles as roll models.

    16. 16

The church knows what they're talking about, seeing as they love young boys so much, but they don't want to actually marry those boys, lol. Also for those of you who say homosexuality is a sin, well according to Leviticus so is wearing clothing made from more than one type of material, eating shell fish and pork and working on the Sabbath which is suppose to carry a sentence of death.

      Re: MJJ

I am also a devout catholic, and a straight married conservative woman and this disgusts me beyond belief. The meaning of the term of catholic, is universal. Meaning to help the world, no matter who the man. The bible speaks of helping murders and thieves.

    18. 18

Now the church has more money for the Pedofile fund

    19. 19

      Sounds like blackmail to me!!!
      *
The fact of the matter is that this is DISCRIMINATION!!! Yes, it's their money, and yes, they can give it to whomever they choose but we're talking about politics here. Religion has absolutely NO place in politics, period! Secularism is included in your constitution, people! Go READ IT! I know you don't like it but it's a fact! lol So the church expects an entire city/District to make their laws suit them better? Lmao I don't think so! We don't live in Medieval Times anymore.
      *
This has NOTHING to do with "not everybody agrees with you, Perez" but with the fucking law!!! Start respecting your Constitution like you always claim you do!

    22. 22

Just because their beliefs don't follow yours doesn't make them haters.

They do not believe in hatred nor are they promoting it.
They believe the sanctity of marriage is sacred between a man and a woman and thus shouldn't be forced to support same sex marriages just because its someone elses belief.

If we ALL believed the same things we'd all be the same religion or faith. The world is made up of all sorts of religious denominations, beliefs, cultures etc and because 1 faith has different beliefs than another doesn't mean they all hate each other.

They also don't believe in divorce or believe a marriage is valid if the ceremony isn't performed inside a catholic church. They don't' HATE people who get married outdoors or get divorced, its just not recognized. Silly or not - its their belief - not hatred.

    23. 23

Look you may not like it but they have every right to pull their services out of the city if the City is creating laws that are fundamentally against what they believe. Why doesn't the city provide these services then. I grew up around DC and I have never seen a more corrupt and wasteful government. Maybe the City Council will have to start earning their pay and create and provide services to their citizens instead of depending on someone else to do it. … I hear all this stuff about tolerance and acceptance… let me tell you people you can be tolerant and loving but a wrong is still a wrong. Gay Marriage is wrong Jesus said love everyone and I do but I don't condone gay marriage.. my gay friends are aware of this and know I still love them.

    24. 24

did that guy have cheek implants?

    25. 25

      what's a big deal! just " humanism " >> a lot of people never get it…

    26. 26

That's disgraceful. Here in Australia we have the Uniting Church which not only provides social services to all including gay and lesbian people, but actually have programs that specifically provide support to young gay and lesbian people in the community. Non-judgemental, non-discriminatory support. Isn't that how it should be? Those who are Christians usually say Jesus loves us all… funny how so many act the opposite.

      27

I love you PH but I'm Catholic and you are now infringing your OPINIONS on my Church! I believe in equal rights but charity is a handout, a favor. A single government cannot infringe upon a private organization. Catholic Charities is a religious organization and can do what it pleases. Maybe the DC government should lay off the organization so they can continue to operate and HELP out the needy in DC as their own 'DC Council' cannot get it together and handle it themselves.

    28. 28

The Bible says NOTHING about Homosexuality. The Catholic Church is Evil.

    29. 29

So if gay marriage is going against all the ideals of "Preserving Marriage," then what about divorce? I swore it said in the vows "til death do us part"…

    35. 35

IT'S GREAT THAT PEREZ PUT THIS UP…WILL CNN OR FOX REPORT THIS?….

    36. 36

It is my experience that these solid God fearing religious groups are essentially loudly endorsed and frequented by hypocrites, bigots and deviants who don't have a christian bone in their bodies. The fact that these groups can demand that their beliefs and discriminations are righteous above all is appalling. To love and be loved is an essential ingrained human emotion same sex or opposite. It's no-ones business given its consented to by both parties and of legal age. When you have people like Carrie Perjean banging on, promoting herself and her selfish attitudes representing God, preaching discrimination and starring in sex tapes and getting paid loads to do it hey something is wrong. Good christians help people, accept people, devote themselves to enriching this world and keep their opinions between themselves and their God. Shame one anyone who uses the church to push through bigotry and hate and double shame to those who allow them to.

    37. 37

MARIO PLEASE DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND GET CANCER OF THE BOO BOO HOLE.

    38. 38

    39. 39

as a catholic i am ashamed of what they are doing

    40. 40

That is so awful. What happened to toleration? Doesn't the bible teach that? With this close minded thinking, I'd REALLY be surprised if they have any gay or lesbians working for them. So why are they really doing this? It's not so that they don't have to support gay couples, considering they most likely DON'T have any gay employees.

They're just hurting 60,000 innocent people- people who have NOTHING to do with same the sex marriage debate!!- to make a point and push their beliefs on others.

All of you coming on here to hate on perez obviously didn't even read the article. It's not about advocating gay marriage. It's about the church TAKING AWAY SERVICES TO THE NEEDY.

    41. 41

Um, they are a church. If you want them to obey secular laws, you better make them pay taxes as well. You cannot have it both ways.

    42. 42

Re: Kevin1243 – Not true. Leviticus 20:13 states "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."

    43. 43

Perez, you talking about disrespect? Come on! That's not respecting their view. if you want people to see your side, you have to respect their side too. Gays is not accepted by everybody, and you can't make people accept it. You just have to hope and pray that they come around to your view, while you continue to see theirs. The Catholic Church sees providing same sex couples with healthcare for their partners as somehow condoning their relationship, which you know they cannot and will not do, and no one can force them to do it. They would rather shut services down than to be forced into doing something that is against their dogma. Right or wrong, you still have to repect their stand. For them, its akin to having to provide abortion and birth control information. They can't do that either. i think the real issue here is the councilpeople thinking they can FORCE the Church to do anything. The Church is not, never has been, nor ever will be, politically correct, and there is no one out there who can make them. For them, it IS a SIN to be homosexual, and act upon it. Those that are chaste and celebate are fine with them.

    44. 44

I don't necessarily agree with the approach the Catholic church is taking but I can see their point.

I'm a Christian. I'm not opposed to same-sex marriage so long as it's outside of the church. The bible, which is what I choose to live my life by, clearly states that homosexuality is a sin. I don't hate anyone because of their lifestyle, even if I disagree with it. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God. It's not my place to judge.

Catholic Charities didn't say they hated anyone and they really weren't disrespectful. Should they had made the threat? Probably not. That doesn't make them bad people though. It just means they disagree with you. They can't ever be a secular organization because they are a church- completely opposite!

    45. 45

just curious - that is all written in the marriage contract? so only a married gay will be threaten like everybody else, or are that two different issues you're mixing up to make your agenda look more important?

    47. 47

What are all of you Catholic bashers (you included Perez) going to do when you can't sue God to get into Heaven? God's will comes first, everyone else's second. If God doesn't agree w/the archdiocese's decision, He will send change. It's not up to you, me, or the man in the moon to challenge God the Father; let His will be done and serve Him first.

Re: Mad Dog – Jesus is in the new testament not the old one, dumbass. And since you're so good at quoting leviticus, tell me — do you follow ALL of the levitical codes? If not, get ready to burn in hell too, hypocrite.

    49. 49

      just stf up……….

    50. 50

Re: Mad Dog – I am Catholic, and have mixed views about gay marriage, but even i know that you really cannot use Leviticus as a valid argument against gay marriage. Leviticus is full of crazy, outdated laws. According to Leviticus 19:19, you cannot plant two different types of seeds in a field, you must not wear clothing made of two fabrics. Hope you haven't been wearing any poly-cotton blends. Leviticus 19:27 also states that you should not cut your hair or trim your beard. Do you follow any of these absurd laws? I don't see how you can use Leviticus 20:13 as a valid example of God's word, if the rest of Leviticus is completely ignored.
All that said, if Leviticus really are the laws of God, then everybody is already going to hell and we will have bigger problems then gay marriage.

    51. 51

Re: Mad Dog – Yeah, but as someone previously pointed out, Leviticus also states that eating shellfish and pork is an abomination and you can't wear clothing made out of two different fabrics. So can we just pick and choose from the bible what we want to adhere to or should we agree that it's just trite bullshit?

    53. 53

The Catholic Church has hit a new low, they're continued oppression and denial of basic equality continues to inspire and preserve hatred and discrimination. we could all debate for years on what the bible says about homosexuality, the fact is the bible is subjective text that has been read and interpreted many different ways, i could name several passages wherein homosexuality is presented positively but for everyone of those i'm sure religious conservatives could write a book condemning homosexuality. But can't you see that your wasting your time promoting hate instead of love, no one should have the power do deny basic social services based on sexuality, we are all humans made from the same skin, the same brains, and the same heart. Saying that someone is somehow lower or less deserving simply because of who they choose to love is disgusting. Please keep talking about this, please keep promoting positive space for voices to be heard. thank you perez!!!!

    54. 54

Re: roox6646 – My response was to posting 29 which incorrectly stated that the Bible says nothing about homosexuality. And I never stated I believe in the teachings of the Bible. Too bad you are so small minded that you have to attack anyone who you disagree with.

    57. 57

    62. 62

Why is someone a hater because they don't believe in gay marriage. I think gays should be allowed to have civil unions with all the rights married couples have, including to have the divorce rate heterosexuals have, too (and it appears they would). I simply believe the word "marriage" IS historically, a biblical thing. I don't understand why you have to stomp on religious rights when you could have very valid ethical arguments with civil unions. But no…you have to have it ALL. Well..this is what you get. Marriage is between a man and a woman. It always has been and always should be. I don't hate gay people, I just wish they would soften their agenda to civil unions, which would be hard to argue ethically as far as legal rights go in America. What…are we going to have to edit the Bible to take out the homosexual "bashing" in it from thousands of years ago next? Nevermind that the Bible also bashes heterosexual immorality, too. Go for the obtainable and leave the marriage (and divorce rate) to heterosexuals. Get the civil unions and hell…prove heterosexuals that homosexuals can actually value a marriage for what it's meant to be…for life. Not get in a hissy fit, avoid counseling, involve children, destroy lives, and be bitter. Go for it! Just let marriage be what it is and always has been.

    63. 63

Re: hazeliiis – "I simply believe the word "marriage" IS historically, a biblical thing." What a load of crap!!! Marriage is NOT solely a biblical thing. Every religion and society in history has always had the concept of marriage. It's not only a Christian thing but Muslim (including polygamy), Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist etc. So think again before you speak. Geez….

    64. 64

The Church does not have to tolerate any GAY issues as it is against their religion. By LAW it is fine but to force a church to go along with it is wrong. So what they are doing is fine, are they supporting murderers? NO, so why are you expecting them to support GAYS which falls into the say category?

    65. 65

Perez, your readers are morons. This thread is pathetic. Fuck the catholic church, fuck religion.

    66. 66

Yes, and the bible addresses many other things like eating meat. Funny, we always go back to the gay thing. When can we evolve and MOVE THE FUCK ON. Homosexuality is as old as the day is long…

Re: Ze German – American conservative Christians are in the dark and actually believe the Founding Fathers wanted a religious society, and that is their excuse for supporting a Christian-influenced government. Too bad they don't even bother to study the words of the Founding Fathers…
"Religious institutions that use government power in support of themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths, or of no faith, undermine all our civil rights. Moreover, state support of an established religion tends to make the clergy unresponsive to their own people, and leads to corruption within religion itself. Erecting the "wall of separation between church and state," therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society."

Re: Ze German – They bring up the Constitution to protect their precious guns, despite the horrible things that happen in the US due to the 2nd Amendment. Yet, when it comes to separation of church and state, they feel that part should be ignored.

    74. 74

Re: hazeliiis – There was such a thing as marriage before the Bible and Christianity appeared (I should say when Christianity evolved from earlier religions, with many of the same characteristics of those "pagan" religions). People were married before the first century. Marriage is not a Christian concept, as people all over the world are still married without the Christian religion, myself included.
The word marriage originated in the 13th century, from the Latin "maritaticum". So if the word marriage comes from a Latin word, with the same meaning, there was a word for marriage long before Christianity arose.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE CATHOLICISM, DON'T BE CATHOLIC.

YOU CANNOT FORCE A RELIGION TO CHANGE IT'S RULES, RELIGION IS WHAT IT IS. NOT FLEXIBLE OR OPEN FOR SUGGESTIONS.

That's terrible! Gays are human being too. Lol, just kidding

    91. 91

Seems to me that you just can't stand it when someone else stands firmly by thier beliefs Perez! And by the way, nice job NOT mentioning how the LDS Church worked WITH GLBT groups this week to pass stae laws guaranteeing that same sex couples received and now enjoy the EXACT SAME LEGAL RIGHTS as married couples!!! Isn't that big news?

I don't think I'll ever understand why gays should get married. I'm sorry. Maybe someday I'll understand.

    93. 93

Marriage was not originally a religious commitment ceremony, it was a property exchange between a father and husband. Women were the property of the father until they married and became the property of their husband. It wasn't until women were given rights that marriage actually was about love and commitment to one another, and in some culture it is still all about property. So for those who complain about gay marriage because "marriage is between a man and a woman" essentially you are right, that is if you believe that women are still property of their husbands. The "new" definition of marriage is two people who love eachother and want to stand up in front of their friends and families to show their commitment to one another (oh and of course get tax breaks and medical benefits) then what is the problem. It is my belief that the 24 hour vegas weddings do more damage to the "sanctity" of marriage than any same sex marriage could do.

    94. 94

"The proposed law could also allow lawsuits against those who do not provide same-sex benefits to employees and could result in the revocation of the accreditation of religious colleges." So basically a religious institution will have to acknowledge gay couples as married or be sued. So much for freedom of religion… This forces a religion to go against their beliefs. sad.

Re: Kikigrl – I agree completely. It seems there is no longer a sancitity to marriage, because of the high rate of annulments and divorce.
It doesn't seem fair that people go to Vegas and have quickie ceremonies, then have it annulled within weeks (Pam Anderson and Britney Spears) when there are people who have been together for 20 years who can't be married or enjoy the same benefits of being married, simply because they're of the same sex. Marriage is about love, but many straight people see it as a fun thing to do when drunk. How sacred can that institution be?
Why is it an issue what sex a person is? People who use the excuse that this could lead to people marrying multiple people, children or dogs are completely ridiculous. Marriage should be between two consenting adults. In some cases, a person's sex is difficult to determine. In the case of Chaz Bono, what sex is he allowed to marry? Is it genetically determined or physically determined? Chaz was born a female, so can he only marry men?

As a former Catholic, now liberal Episcopalian, I can`t stand how homophobic
and hypocritical the R.C. church is. With continuing reports of sexual
molestation of alter boys just proves how out of touch and hypocritical the church is.
