What Recession??? It's Ovah!

925506552.jpg

Despite so many people still out of work and the economy in the state it's in, it seems there's still a lot of money to be thrown around.

At least when it comes to art.

Wednesday night, Sotheby's auctioned off several post-war and contemporary art pieces bringing in over $130 MILLION!

In fact, Andy Warhol's piece, 200 One Dollar Bills, sold for $43.7 million. The 1962 piece was last sold by Sotheby's over 20 years ago for $300,000.

Talk about a good investment!

The lucky winner of that piece last night actually came from a phone bid, surpassing the estimated $12 million they thought it would sell for.

And another bidder paid $6.1 million for Warhol's 1965 Self Portait.

Other artists' work also brought in huge numbers, but the night definitely belonged to Warhol.

As for the bidders, they included some rich names like fashion designer Valentino Garavani and jeweler Laurence Graff.

The rich just keep getting richer!

Art news on Perez Hilton ?? I love it!!

  6. 6

What dumbass pays $43.7 million for $200?

    Re: Myzaree

Its not actually purchased out of beauty. Art is bought and sold like stocks on the stock market.

This type of buying and selling was huge in the 1980s when art started to be bought as an investment instead out of appreciation. Andy Warhol was a big fake, but his name is still a "Brand"

The person who bought the painting over the phone probably wont actually make the payment. But if he does make the payment he/she will probably just sell it within a few years to try to make profit. But paying that much for a 200 dollar painting is a rip off..he will probably take a loss….

Hopefully they take a look at the Provenance on it. Because anyone cant put together that piece of shit.

Perez can you auction off your vote for 2012? Im hoping so, because you shouldnt be voting at all. Real wealth does what it wants, when it wants. The 0.1 % that own more than half the worlds wealth dont cure recession. Welcome to the depression!

    Re: Bud_Fox
No offense….but your comment is stupid.
I'm not a huge fan of Warhol, but you cannot deny the man's influence in Pop Art or in film. He was a famewhore but that's who he marketed himself as and it worked. So look who's laughing now when he is a part of art history.
He was wealthy enough when he was alive so I think he's laughing in his grave.

    i love warhol's art.

    Re: sarainadream

he was wealthy because that cheap fuck would fuck people over and never paid anyone… Look im glad he figured out how to print screen shit…really fucking hard.

He may be in some bullshit pop art books, but no one really respected him. Other artists went along for the ride and made bullshit art just to get work and they knew it was bullshit. Which im not mad at… But I don't think Andy Warhol was a genius come on now…… If anything he fucked up people who did real art.

Instead the next generation of artists had to throw away experimentation and take courses on bullshit art and business courses to learn about branding. Art wasn't anymore about pure art, but bullshit it was all about being a Charlatan.

And for his films…come on we all know they were complete shit… It was his name which was a Brand that people associated with.. like really, you are telling me the way he just put a camera on a tripod and let it record was brilliant? It was complete trash that made profit because of his name…

Like a popular music artist these days can put out complete shit and people will rave about it… Its all bullshit.

  12. 12

Andy Warhol is the biggest fucking piece of shit artist out there. Good god… I can't believe people pay that much money for his shitty "art".

  13. 13

    Re: sarainadream

on a side note, you can say my comments is stupid that is fine… But don't say my comment is stupid based upon the fact people only bought his painting because of great work..

You are telling me people are willing to pay x million because his art was stunning? Its a brand name nothing more nothing less…these rich fuckers want to fit in just as much as a groupie does after a concert or around famous people…

Read about art they will tell you straight up about the 80s how people were just buying and selling art for millions of dollars not based upon great work but because of the Brand Name…it was a complete joke and everyone knew it. Everyone was just out to buy and sell like shared of coke on the stock exchange

  17. 17

Just Some Vaccine Ingredients: Aluminum, Mercury, Formaldehyde, MSG, Chicken Embryos, Monkey Kidney, Aborted Fetuses. What's doesn't k*ll you can only make you stronger right?

  18. 18

Um, okay. So let me get this straight. People have MULTI MILLIONS of dollars to spend on this CRAP but there's no money to feed the starving, diseased, and destitute people of this world let along this country. Fucking makes sense to me! People are screaming being gay is a sin. Uh uh. No fucking way. People… THIS is a fucking sin.

  19. 19

    Re: Bud_Fox

Totally get what you're saying… but honey, the painting was not $200. that's the title.

  20. 20

    Re: Bud_Fox

Well said. People are sheep. Esp. the limosine liberals… oohhh, you know someone who owns a Warhol…ooooh. Fucking give me a break. I'm glad ou know his work sucked. It did. But I suppose he got a laugh out of all the people who bought into his brand. Next someone's going to say Pollack was a genius and I'm going to puke. Hellooooo Rembrandt anyone? Renoir? Michelangelo? DaVinci? Fuck, even Dali.

    Re: Not All The Same

Lobby somewhere else you fucked up Christian scientist. No, let the whole world forego vaccines and lets all succumb to disease. Besides, most of the food you ingest, unless 100% organic, contains all of that shit anyway. And how ’bout your cosmecueticals? No fda approval on any of that shit? How ’bout what your sheets are made of? And the clothes you wear? and the air you breath? And that toxic tuna melt you had for lunch the other day. Crawl back under your hole you moron and die. Of measles.

  22. 22

if the rich didn't keep gettin richer then no one could pay taxes… then the lazy people of america couldn't keep on gettin their shit paid for.

  23. 23

    Re: MileyCyrusLooksLikeAChipmunk

My bad…I must have been confused… When I read the article it made me think about back in the day when this artist pasted a whole bunch of certificates similar to like T-Notes/Bonds all over the canvas….It was displayed for show in a museum or somesh*t and then several years later somebody broke into the place and peeled off the Certificates and took off. They didn't even take the frame they just left everything there.

They just wanted the certificates because the value had increased in interest as the years went by hahaha…. The artist supposedly wasn't pissed and said that the theft that took place only proved his point that people just care about money and not artwork or somesh*t.

    24

Warhol wasn't talented at all, he just knew how to market himself and his style well. All he did was take existing images and screen colors over them…sure, it looks cool, but it took no talent and any art major in America could replicate that shit for you..

Re: gotcmac(: – EXACTLY! THANK YOU! Although I wouldn't waste your breath trying to talk any sense into Mario, he just does what Madonna tells him…

    26

No, the wealthy are putting their cash money into art as a hedge in case their currency does a belly-up. Gold, art, it's all the same to them.

  27. 27

    ugh this is disgusting

and when has 200 dollar bills glued to a canvas (or whatever it is) ever been considered art

  28. 28

everyone should watch a documentary called Zeitgeist, you will see that nothing is the way you think it is,, this will change your view on things

  29. 29

With the system we have there will always be people with too much money - right the riches will get richer - and we normal people get poorer and the poor are out of everything.

    Shame on every western government.
