After just two weeks in theaters, This Is It, the film documenting Michael Jackson's final tour rehearsals, has taken in $200 million internationally!!

It takes the cake for highest-grossing concert movie of all time!!
Although the film brought in just $61 million in North America, it has made over $140 million overseas. Japan leads the packs with $27.2 million, followed by the UK with $14.3 million.
Just goes to show how much the King of Pop will be missed and, unfortunately, Joe Jackson is probably plotting his next move!

Wish we were chillin' on the couch tonight watching SNL.
I am of the opinion that the truth of this film lies somewhere in the middle, Those nay sayers (Perez included) need to take back their words because this film has been very, very successful, more within the genres it embraces (concert film and documentary) than in general as a movie.
I feel also that many MJ fans had overly high expectations for the film based on their unwavering support of MJ (MJ is number 1 in everything, etc.) bolstered by unachievable hype by Sony and Fandango etc.
In my next post I will state some This Is It facts.
I'm not a big MJ fan but my friends wanted to see this so I went along and soon found myself dancing in my seat. It was a very good documentary of an incredible Entertainer. There's really no one better in that department.

Perez, its sad that its taken you this long to make a post that this movie is a hit. I heard it was AMAZING the day it came out but you were calling it a failure and saying that it bombed when I was reading that it was number 1 at the box office. You need a reality check, you worship Madonna and Lady GaGa but your luke warm towards Michael who's WAY more successful and talented than any artist has ever been or ever will be. He actually cared about his music and art and had a passion and dedication towards it, unlike GaGa and Madonna who really don't care too much about anything they do.

This Is it is the most successful concert film both in terms of foreign profits and worldwide profits.

To all those who jump on these statistics and say MJ is a failure in American it is worth noting that most films get 2/3 or more of their profits from foreign markets and 1/3 from American markets (for example: Potter 6, Ice Age, and Angels and Demons).

Your wondering why people would go see an "unfininished tour rehearsal??" It wasn't just any ole tour, it was a Michael Jackson tour. People would have flocked to theatres even if they knew Michael was just going to be sitting down brainstorming ideas for a song in front of a camera. Oh and BTW "This is It" was amazing! This Is It is just entering the list of most successful world wide films of all time at number 381 and as it passes 381 it will move up that list somewhat.
This Is It will likely not make the list of most successful American films of all time because the list starts at 438 with 100 million films. As This Is It will not make 100 million domestically it will remain far down on the list of successful American films.

This Is It may fall out of the top five films in America this weekend after Friday grosses for 2012, Christmas Carol, Men Who Stare At Goats, The Fourth Kind, and Precious (with only 1.8 million) all were ahead of This Is it. This means little because 2 more days have to unfold to get the full picture.
This Is It has been well received by the critics with a 80% rating which puts it just under the 100 top critically received films this year.

If the film makes 65 million in America that means only 6.5 million MJ fans out of 304 million Americans bothered to see the film. That is only 2% of the American population.
If the film has made 27 million in Japan that means only 2.7 million MJ fans out of 128 million Japanese bothered to see the film. That is only a little over 2% of the Japanese population.
If the film has made 14.3 million in the UK that means only 1.4 million MJ fans out of a population of 61 million bothered to see the film. That is only a little over 2% of the population. The 1.4 million in the UK falls in line with the 1 million tickets sold to the 50 concerts and then some so this seems like an accurate predictor of MJ fandom.

Awards season may be kind to this film. First off just straight out the posthumous thing works in the awards world.
I think This Is It has a good chance of being nominated by the limited numbers in the Hollywood Foreign Press for Best Comedy/Musical Film.
I believe This Is It has a fair chance of being nominated for Best Documentary by the Academy but what works against it is only documentary film makers are able to place a film into nomination in that category and they are a serious lot who like their movies to be issue related.
I think This Is It has a small chance of being nominated as one of the Best Films of 2009 now that we are back to 10 Best Picture nominees and also because this award is nominated by all members of the academy (actors, directors, writers, etc.).
As for the more minor movie awards and individual and society critics awards anything is possible.
