Chicago Mayor Pissed! Blames Media For Oprah's Exit!
Well, sure. He's going to be losing a lot of tourism when her ass leaves town!
Chicago's Mayor, like so many housewives in America, is saddened to learn that his goldmine of a TV icon is hightailing it out of Chicago. Oprah Winfrey and the Windy city have become synonymous and with that, it has improved Chicago's image.
But with her exit from the show, Mayor Daley is looking to point fingers and he's found his target - the media.
He cites the uproar the city made when Oprah closed down a major intersection for the season premiere of her show.
Mayor Daley says:
"That became a big rhubarb in the Chicago press — beat up Oprah. So you keep kicking people, people will leave, simple as that…I'm just saying that when someone's doing something like that, most cities would love it. … It's just amazing. I don't know why it became so controversial."
We don't either, but we also don't think it has anything to do with why she is leaving. She's Oprah, man! She could buy and sell every paper in Chicago.

ok, we're bummed that we're losing Oprah, and have tuned out Daley for a while now, but there's no reason to hate on Chicago for it. We didn't chase her out, and we've still got a lot to offer, tourist-wise. We're not LA and New York for a reason! (we're so much nicer!) Second City baby!
Oprah is indeed a gold mine for Chicago. According to the Gallup poll, she's one of the most admired people in America. The only people who hate her are racists, sexists, fat phobics, & elitists who don't like mass culture. She's soooooooo influential. Anyone she endorses immediately goes through the stratosphere, whether it's Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Obama, or her latest book club author. It's estimated that she's worth tens of millions of dollars a year for Chicago. Think about all the thousands of people she employs directly or indirectly. Think of all the tourism, media attention, & celebrities she brings.
I'm actually happy. Then I wont have to deal with street closures, and other stupid events she has downtown that clog up all the traffic when I'm trying to get to work. Thank goodness!

Oprah isn't used to not having her sparkling, saintly image anymore. She is leaving because she knows people are starting to figure out that maybe Oprah isn't always right, after all. She will never admit that of course and use other excuses. But I bet I am right.

I don't think Oprah really cares about having a perfect image. If she did she wouldn't have thrown all her influence behind electing Obama since politics is very polarizing. But Oprah's smart enough to know that all the popularity in the world means nothing if you're not willing to stand up for what you truly believe in. She saw an opportunity to use her influence to change history & brilliantly took advantage of it. Of course people who resent a black woman having that much power would try to demonize her & she would no longer be loved by everyone, but if you're loved by everyone it means you're not doing anything to shake things up & you have no relevance. As a Chicago resident, I would just like to say how completely out of line Daley is. Its absurd to blame Oprah's departure on the backlash she received from shutting down a huge chunk of a major street for her premier episode. I'm a huge fan of Oprah and what she has done for Chicago, however that day was absolute chaos in the City causing myself and thousands of other residents on their way to school or work to be hours late. Daley hasn't been a crowd favorite anyway lately, he's really in no place to be playing the blame game.

Everyone is making such a big deal about it. Nowhere have I read that she's leaving Chicago, or that HARPO is doing so. Oprah has spent a significant amount of time in California and other areas for years. Her OWN network has offices in LA but that doesn't mean she's going to call LA home. She's not retiring either; she's retiring the show.

I say let her leave. I live 45 min. from the city and I really don't know what the big deal is about if she leave's or stay's. I think Daley (rightfully) gets attacked more in the local media than Oprah does. Though obviously some people still have their panties in a knot over the street closing episode.
