Mariah Carey Wins For Precious Performance

A big congrats goes out to Mimi!
In the first of many accolades we imagine, Mariah Carey received the Breakthrough Performance Award for her role in Precious this afternoon from the The Palm Springs International Film Festival. Mariah will receive her award at The Palms Springs Convention Center on Jan. 5th.
This more than makes up for making us sit through Glitter!

No offense, because I loved Precious, but Mariah was BARELY in it. Monique is the one who deserves all the awards.

Re: Meg_Mo – Mariah's role was a small but PIVOTAL one in this movie. There was a movie a few years back where the actress only had like 3 lines and she WON the OSCAR for BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS. It all depends on how much the role has an effect on the storyline. I think Mariah's role was very much necessary and she NAILED IT . Remeber this role was originally cast with Oscar winning actress Helen Mirren but she had to bow out due to scheduling which made it open for Mariah to shine.

Re: Meg_Mo – I haven't seen the movie, but I did read (not saying it is necessarily accurate) something that said that Monique wasn't doing much to promote the film/her role, so that might be why there isn't a push for her to win an award. Purely based on the trailers I saw, it looked like she did an amazing job. But I'm happy for Mariah Carey…it's good to see people succeed.

Two things… this is like her 4th movie, so how can it be a breakthrough performance. And, she was only in the movie for like a few minutes. Her performance was like monotone and unemotional. You got to talk to somebody if you want your check sweety? I don't get it…

I'm sorry but I find the notion that this chick can act hard to believe. I own Glitter (it's one of my fave bad movies) and I even caught another movie she was in on tv (Wisegirls) and she was god awful. I saw some clips of her in Precious and I still didn't think she was terribly impressive. Better, but not mindblowing.

This could really be a breakthrough for Mariah. If the trend continues, Globes and Oscar could follow. We already know that the cast will get nominated (and probably win) a SAAG. Mariah's part is not huge, but it is certainly powerful. If Viola Davis could be nominated last year for Doubt for one incredible scene, so can Mariah Carey. I just hope the Academy gives her a fair chance.
