We don't know how it came across on TV but in the theater, Whitney Houston's performance at American Music Awards was a very powerful thing.

It started off rough, though. We, like many watching probably, were thinking: "Here she goes again! TALKING the song!" But Whitney really found her own strength and channeled something very special as she went on and towards the end….

We felt Jesus in that room!

      highlights last nite - mj winning, taylor winning but recognizing how great mj was & always will be, jayz & akeys' performance and whitney houston - she looks stunning and i cried bcuz she's still the best! standing ovay well-deserved.

      and kelly clarkson's vocals were onpoint. im glad she's healthy, too. she's doing her own thang. u go girl!

      and perez actually looked rocker chic. i luv'd the look. he's usually looking a hot (not hawt) mess.

      and paula crapdul tries way too hard. she's looked horrible.

      Jesus is made of FELT?
      I admire Whitney for coming back and also for performing what to my ears sounded live when so may did not.
      I think her album sales will be affected positively by this performance.
      All that having been said, she is now and will likely always will be a fraction of the singer she was in the 80s and 90s. Kids crack is wack.

      The voice will never be the same again, it seems. There sounds like there is damage to the cords, resulting in the much more rough and 'husky' sound, and the lower range of her songs. She cannot sustain phrases and long notes as she once could, possibly as a result of loss of suppleness to the vocal cords, nodes on the cords, or weakness in the support muscles. She resorts now to many quick repetitions of words or musical phrases, which fit the R&B/almost gospel style. All that said, there is still emotion and artistry there.

      Perez this was really weak! For Whitney’s North American award show comeback she should have knocked this out of the park. I love Whitney and was hopping for something much better. The song sucks by itself but where were all the high notes? It was just screaming “I didn’t know” over and over. Someone at Arista needs to tell her she can’t play it safe anymore. Diva needs to impress.

      I was very moved by her performance and obviously so was everyone else because she got a standing ovation, she definitely had the most memorable performance last night. When she stopped and took a breath and looked around at every one, I cried I was so moved. I saw some teary eyes when the camera panned the audience too…

      That was rough beginning to end. Whitney's voice sounds so strained, I still think she can sing but it doesn't have the same purity that her vocals once had.

      Her current voice would not even make it past an American Idol audition. Simply tragic.
      I think many long time fans are just getting caught up in the excitement and not really listening to what they are hearing.

      Amazingly clear and full of emotion. This girl is still the best singer out there. She is held up to a standard that she created. The depth of her talent definitely came across on television. The whole house was on its feet. Loved that she just stood there and sang. Old school and great.

      I was touched by Whitney Houston's performance. I don't understand all of the negative criticism in regards to her voice. She's been out years….it is 2009,so is it really fair to assume that she will sound EXACTLY the same as she did way back then? I am happy to see her back doing what she does best, but I will admit that her dress was not very flattering to her figure.

      I am not enjoying this new voice of hers.

      The theatrics Whitney always did use them to her great advantage.

      Did anyone actually pay attention to her number? It was horrible. Obviously her stint with "whatever" she was doing took its toll on her voice. She does deserve the lifetime achievement award but for past performances. AWFUL AWFUL! Like most of the performances on AMA!
