Doperty Booed Off Stage For Singing Nazi Anthem!

Filed under: Anglophilia > Pete Doherty > Oops!

The man has a gift for coming up with creative ways to be a dipshit!

Pete Doherty was quite the surprise guest while performing solo at the on3 music festival in Munich on Saturday.

Just when we hadn't heard anything from him for a while, Pete decides to sing a Nazi anthem in Germany!

REALLY?!

The crowd began to boo, but Doperty sang five more songs before festival organizers escorted him offstage.

He sang the first verse of Deutschlandlied, a part of the song that has not been sung since WWII, as it translates to “Germany, Germany above anything/Above everything in the world”.

Yikes!

The concert was also broadcast live on Bavarian radio but was cut as soon as the douche began to belt out the hate!

But, don't worry! He's sorry!!!!

Sigh.

As I believe him to be ignorant and also pretty much fucked up on something 24/7, I would like to think this was some kind of mistake.
The unforgivable acts of human cruelty committed by the Nazis and the German populace during those years must never be forgotten.

“Germany, Germany above anything/Above everything in the world”. HAH! put america in lieu of germany and you have the mindset of the republican party of the united states. why is that weird?

    15. 15

As a British citizen could I please take it upon myself to apologise. Sadly we have to suffer this low life smack head but I didn't realise the rest of the world had to, sorry. Why is he even performing? He hasn't done anything good since the Libertines, he needs to sort himself out and get clean or go back to prison and stay there (I'm sure he'll do something else to get arrested in the neat future).

    16. 16

This idiot is constantly half baked, he should be getting by in life on 'retard pass'

My close relatives deep in the Black Forest, late one night, REFUSED to sing this to me. They fear and hate it more than any other song. Understandably.

    20. 20

umm…. Deutschlandlied is the national anthem of Germany. Just the third verse, but still…

      26

come on, dude. do some fucking research.
deutchlandlied is STILL the national anthem of Germany
he sang the only verses that anyone outside of Germany knows
which are STILL in the anthem.

your shitty reporting continues to be shitty.
why your readership is down and you're a flash in the pan.

      31

Whoops. He said sorry because he didn't know that the still used anthem had switched out one verse after the second world war. Maybe got lyrics off the net….

      Re: SDawg

      bravo.

    33. 33

god neo nazi are so stupid who want to be a nazi

    34. 34

Why would he wanna sing the anthem at all? We don't overuse it like Americans do with theirs. Most Germans still don't feel comfortable singing our own anthem because we're not used to it! Shish….

    35. 35

I don't even know who that is
I'll listen to his Nazi music before I buy that fucking Chris Brown record though!

    36. 36

It's not a Nazi anthem. It was the national anthem of Germany since 1922 during the Weimar Reich. During the Third Reich only the first stanza was used followed by the SA song Horst-Wessel-Lied (THAT's a Nazi anthem!). After WWII the national anthem of West Germany still was the Deutschlandlied, but with only the third stanza sung. Upon reunification in 1991, the third stanza ONLY was confirmed as the national anthem. In my opinion it's a beautifully composed anthem (by Joseph Haydn) but to me it seems still wrong to sing it, even if it's only the third stanza. It's still the same melody, it carries too much negative baggage and when I hear people sing it it gives me chills… and not in a good way. In fact, there's no worse place in the world to sing the first verse of this song than Germany.

    37. 37

      What an ignorant idiot.

    38. 38

Oh, and I think the original meaning was not really "Germany above all"… it's more like "Germany first". Something Republicans say all the time about the US. And the German anthem doesn't glorify or even mention war…. unlike The Star Spangled Banner, God Save The Queen or La Marseillaise…… don't think it's nice to sing about throwing bombs or scatter enemies.

    39. @v@ says – reply to this

      39

It was a typical touristy mistake.

    40. 40

      Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles…

Now I have the song stuck in my mind. Thanks.

Doherty is a mess, but this is rock and roll. It's about upsetting the apple cart and being provocative. Let's recall that David Bowie gave a Nazi salute once. The Brits seem to have an odd admiration for their Saxon kin and former enemies. Hell, isn't Prince Charles of German extraction?

    41. 41

If it has not been sung in 64 years, then how did they know that part of the song?

    42. 42

fucking loser…seriously perez can u stop posting anything about this waste of life..he's so disgusting to look at

    43. 43

Sounds like he was singing the German National Anthem but with the old first verse that they haven't used since WWII. The tune and the rest of the verses are the same as they always were but they took out the first verse because "deutschland uber Alles" wasn't considered tactful in the circumstances. So get your facts right. He was being a bit stupid but not exactly singing Nazi anthems. I'm getting bored with Perez deliberately twisting facts to make a scandal.

      44

      nazi anthem, now please!
no easier way to create some headlines than to sing that lines. the british have some unique way to deal with WW2 - what with prince harry and his nazi costume?
best way to promote his gig in munich the day after - which was obviously great. even though i doubt he had it in mind.
but anyway: do you really think you should comment on things you have no clue about either, perez?

      45

Peter considers Germany as his first home, and I believe he's had many fond memories there. I don't think his intention was to go there and piss everyone off with nazi anthems. If it's part of the national anthem, I'm reckoning he kinda did something without thinking about it. We're all prone to mistakes.
Oh and great for using a picture from when Peter was at Glasto, and NOT a nazi salute. What a disgrace to deliberately twist things around. You should love Peter alone.

      OH and PS…
Peter is also part Jewish, so could be in a way some kind of dramatic irony.

      Re: Ü!!!SEMICOLON!!!bergeist

The American Anthem was about freedom - go back to Germany you fucking nazi

    50. 50

I really think he's cute and a genius songwriter but OMG how stupid do you have to be to do something like this??

    51. 51

The song isn't a Nazi song- it was written by Haydn a century and a half before the Third Reich. At the time, it was a call for unity- the words "above all" or "over all" do not mean that Germany is better than anyone else, it was a call to unite the Holy Roman Empire. In its original context, it would be like Lincoln saying "America over all" during the Civil War- put aside the differences and reunite. After being used for several noble causes for the next 100+ years, THEN the Nazis used it for their own purposes. Doherty should know better- he's European, right? But the song itself is not evil, nor was it written for bad purposes. It's something that started out good, was used for bad, and now Germans try to distance themselves from it.

    52. 52

      Re: SDawg

Yeah, the song is called "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" (Unity and justice and freedom), which IS the German national anthem.
BUT its illegal to sing the 3rd verse…
and its no longer part of the national anthem…for 60 years now !

      do some research yourself…dumbass!!!

    53. 53

oh yeah, and america is the navel of the world….since all its citizens came from foreign countries and slaughtered the REAL native americans…congrats on that…

lets go down and dirty on that ! ugh !

    55. 55

      Re: Ü!!!SEMICOLON!!!bergeist
I agree with you totally….but unfortunately it really does mean "Germany above all."

      I hate it ,too

becaue its a verse from the original german anthem…and its against the law to sing that verse.

oh and Germans are all nazis ? What are you a freakin Cowboy shooting native americans or rather a american shooting Viets….or maybe let me think, an american invading Iraq ?

    58. 58

he probably thought it was funny but really should have known better germans are (understandably) hypersensitive over nazi stuff

    59. 59

      ignorance,sheer ignorance.

    60. 60

There's nothing wrong with calling out those little money-hoarding hypochrites every once in a while. But hey, Nazism? Mass murder? Not cool

    61. 61

really bad choice Pete. Not funny.

    62. 62

Re: Ze German – well, that's your personal problem.
      -
why is it any concern of yours when Americans decide to sing their national anthem?

    63. 63

Re: ap076 – Germans nowadays had nothing to do with it, so stop with your bullshit acting like they have something to be sorry about. They DON'T.

    64. 64

      What an idiot.

But you're not one to talk Perez, I've seen more than your fair share of comments equalizing all Germans to nazis. -_-

    65. 65

Re: ListenToMeInstead – That's not what he's saying dipshit. Anthem isn't sung regularly in Germany like it is in America. It's usually just before football games.

    68. 68

Re: JJ1313 – Thank you, but I don't need to go back. Believe it or not, Germany has internet access.

    69. 69

I'm gonna guess it was a sendup of Germany's hate-filled, murderous, moronic past.

    70. 70

He's a good songwriter and rock singer is who he is. Albeit one with some pretty heavy problems.
      Re: SugarSpunSister

    71. 71

Even if it is not realy a nazi anthem.. you don't sing it. It is linked with the 3rd Reich. And since Germany is SICK of every nazi thing.. you should just not sing it. Thats it.
I mean.. there are a few neo-nazis here..but at least it is ABSOLUTLY forbidden .. a thing which seems to be different in the US.

At least Germany is not going to foreign countries to invade them and force their 'american way' on them.. on the other hand.. it worked quite well for oyu guys..i mean.. forcing the blacks into slavery… killing the native americans..
