Lambert's AMAs Performance Prompts Change At ABC

What a load of crap!
ABC is now reviewing their policies for live performers after complaints arose from Adam Lambert's controversial performance at the American Music Awards!
Network President Anne Sweeney reveals that ABC may have performers sign a contract saying that their live performance will mirror their rehearsals!
"We certainly don't want to suppress artistry at any level, but we also have to be very cognizant of who our audience is," Sweeney says.
That sure sounds like "suppressing artistry" to us and tinged with a bit of homophobia!
What do U think of ABC's decision?

He won't be around long enough to matter,
Shut up already perez no body cares about Gaybart
That performance was NOT okay for regular TV. It belonged on MTV. Sorry. Things should be censored on FREE television. Madonna and Britney was on MTV and then photos were shown on the news, which most children don't watch. I'm gay, and obviously there's nothing wrong with being gay, but it things can get to a point where they become inappropriate. 'Cause he's gay, that line is thinner, but if a straight person was to do this, I'd deem it as inappropriate too, just don't know if the rest of the world would as well. Besides, the song stunk too.
I'm really glad Adam is sticking this out. This whole situation really isn't a big deal to me but I know for the gay community it means so much.
Perez sometimes your an idiot. I don't want my children to watch guy on guy simulated oral sex…or woman on woman for that matter…or woman to man…or man to woman.
i think it's fine as long as it is applied across the board. I'm no more interested in watching adam simulate blow jobs than I am in watching Kid Rock's stripper/cheerleaders. If things are known ahead, people can be better able to make a decision as to whether or not they want to watch.
Honestly, is music today so mediocre that it has to be jazzed up with crap?
I think this rat bastard should get his eye blackened just like Mario's pigface!!!hehehehaaa
thats not exactly homophobia, as much as looking out for the young children who watch abc. besides, abc has shows and affiliations that relate with pro gay content. take a chill pill perez, no ones bullying you.
I think it's great. Save the smut for cable where it belongs.
It was a late night show. ABC is just homophobic.
good for ABC, why would you want to take a chance on some idiot degrading people by walking them around on a leash or pervertedly simulating oral sex on national TV
It's censorship plain and simple and it's not a surprise comnig from network TV. Granted, ABC is worse than the other ones. I mean this is the network that decided not to air Saving Private Ryan on Memorial Day one year, because of the "language and graphic violence!" But here's the thing. The FCC, the federal regulators fine them. So if you want to raise hell, do it with the federal government, because these networks are scared of bein fined and having their licenses messed with. When Bush was president they used that like a club, but no one bothered to reivew it now he is gone.
STFU! im all about gay rights but what he did was tasteless! im sure if he only had kissed the keyboard player it wouldnt have been this much of a big deal but he grabbed that guy that was crawling towards him and shoved his head on his crotch like "yeah bitch suck that dick"
I think that ABC is doing the right thing~ there are people from all walks of life watching, and they need to be respectful of them all. Christians-Muslims-Gays-Atheists… You have to find a middle ground that doesn't offend anyone. It's not ok to say anything about homosexuality being wrong, but why is it ok to flaunt it in front of those who think it is?
BLAH-BLAH-BLAH!!! Don't turn homosexuality into the new "you did that because I'm black!!"
i thought it was pretty disgusting. Not everone wants the mental picture of homosexual sex in their heads, let alone there CHILDREN. I didnt agree with the Madona and Britney stupidity either. It is getting to the point where they should rate television so that I know weather or not a performance is going to force me into a talk about sexuality with my 8 year old daughter. That should be my choice, not that douchbag Lambert.
Good grief, what a bunch of homophobic idiots! There was no backlash like this when Madonna and Britney kissed! And Janet Jacksons "wardrobe malfunction" WAS rehearsed…
I am in agreement with ABC decision to have artist sign contracts.
Im not so certain this is descrimination against gay and lesbian community. I seriously doubt that a simulated oral sex scene featuring two women would be considered acceptable behavior either. Adam crossed the line!
I like Adam but people were offended… He's even said that he's not going to change any more performances from rehearsal to live - so what does throwing a contract into the mix matter?
ABC is just trying to cover their own ass, it's understandable.
I kind of undertand this new policy. It is a family show and parents should be able to let their kids watch an awards show…pretty soon there will be nothing left for them to watch. While I don't think it is a big deal for an adult show or something like that it should be reserved for just that. I did not think the Britney/Madonna kiss should have been done either. Britney was a child icon…it is inappropriate for the audience of these awards shows…
good
WHO CARES
"Artistry" is snogging some guy on t.v. because it's part of your "song" or your "artistic" expression? Bullshit! He did it to push buttons. Let's be honest. That's why Madonna did it years ago, too.
Dear Perez,
GET.OVER.IT.
Kind Regards,
Everyone who has ever read your blog.
Lambert is a joke, pretty soon he will be performing concerts with other AI alums Aiken, and Studdard.
I think their decision is crap and totally based on homophobia. Artists go with the flow and Adam did a fantastic job on his performance. Down with ABC!!!
I am a fan of Adam Lambert…cheered him on the whole way through American Idol but that AMA performance was tasteless…he tried WAAAAAAAY too hard and it showed… not impressed
Ok I can understand where you are coming from but ABC is available to all audiences and they have the right to do whatever they want. I fully support artistic freedom but Adam should have known better than display his sexuality in a perverse way. If he doesn't shape up and understand that he may have a young as well as old fan base then no one will buy his shit, I know I'm not planning on it since it's all shit.
I can't stand him….
WHAT a shame, he has NO respect for his own sexuality…
He makes Gay people look bad…
well it's simple ………….
ABC is right
I think that signing something before hand is good. I don't think Adam Lambert should have done some of the things he did. When he talks about a "double standard" usually those women would do ONE shocking thing in a performance. Adam did about 4. I don't remember his song at all which is kind of sad. Being a flashy performer works for people without talent, but Adam could and possibly should just show off his voice for awhile. Theatrics are cool, but when it takes away from your God given talent, like Adam has, it undermines his talent! I love you Adam!
Here's a better idea - why doesn't ABC just ban talentless meat-turds like this from performing on their network altogether? Then they don't have to worry about schticky clowns like this trying so hard to manufacture controversy to compensate for their lack of talent.
If the lovely Lady Gaga had done this performance, no one would care and I think ABC should realize that. They hired him knowing he was gay; their sudden homophobe actions are ridiculous.
This controversy is a lot less than Janet's Superbowl fiasco. That damn near ruined her career. So it may not be homophobia so much as conservativism. And honestly, networks have a right to expect the rehearsal to mimic the live performance. He should have saved that performance for the VMA's. Anyhow I never saw him on American Idol. This was the first time I ever saw him perform and I honestly, I don't get the hype.
sounds like a resonable policy.
you are a complete fuck-wit. this is neither an instance of "suppressing artistry" or "homophobia;" it's a television station protecting its rights to air what they find appropriate (in order to maintain a profitable company). ABC is a family channel. i wouldn't want my future-children watching adam lambert, britney spears, or any other broken-down ho taking facefuls of crotch on live television. that shit is not aprops.
ABC has every right to do what they are doing. If you don't like it….watch a different channel. Perez is a hetero-phobe!
Re: TheMrsBradPitt – Honestly, is music today so mediocre that it has to be jazzed up with crap? — GOOD FUCKING POINT!!
You're such an idiot Perez. It's not HOMOPHOBIA.. just like not everything is RACIST… geez. If people want to be prudes, let them…… it's THEIR choice. They're not trying to hurt ANYONE. Some people don't want to see ANYONE put someone's face on the crotch… girl.. guy.. whatever. Many people have bitched about that skank Britney Spears ever since she came onto the scene… but I guess you forgot about that because it doesn't help your case. Don't force people to like seeing what you like seeing. It's unfair.
I support the Gay community to the fullest……..considering my guardians are gay…….and am really sick of people calling everything homophobic…..it is a converstation stopper, not starter……things like this need to be talked about
is everyone going to continue to whine about this? The performance was INAPPROPRIATE. It wasn't the kiss. It wasn't because he was gay. It was the crotch to face thrusting and the middle finger. Seriously.
Worse, his singing was horrendous. That's the true crime here. Oy vey, his vocals sucked.
This isn't that bad. ABC has lots of viewers and they have to please everyone. I couldn't have cared less about the kiss even though I did this that it was a little to much like making out than it was a peck like Britney and Madonna. Though I didn't care for that either but that was MTV not ABC. What got to me was the blow job simulation, and that would have shocked me if he did it to a chick too, probably more so. My brother is gay and he even thought it was offensive.
THANK YOU ABC!!! FOR STEPPING UP!
Oh Perez, put a lid on it.
His performance was inappropriate for ABC. It's not because he's gay and it's not because he's a guy. It's because children watch that television station and they don't need to see that behavior. Madonna and Britney kissed on stinkin' MTV where that kind of crap is expected. And they still got crap for it in the media. Adam just picked the wrong time to be controversial.
I think certain things shouldnt be on live free, not cable television, regardless of sexual orientation. I mean come on really kissing and grinding is ARTISTIC? I think not. Glambert just wanted to show his gay side and it didnt work out like he planned. Get over it perez and just be glad that gaga hasnt been censored!
word on the street is he is hung like a mouse.
How exactly are ABC's actions homophobic? His performance WAS offensive and innappropriate, and was more or less crude enterntainment rather than "artistry." Just because he's gay it doesn't mean that ABC is being homophobic, I can't believe that you're being so ignorant to that fact. If it was a girl on girl, a girl on guy kind of thing, it would STILL be offensive. There needs to be some limits to what is shown on TV, some safe channels, and ABC is one of those safe channels so for Adam Lambert to violate it in such a manner is unacceptable.
You need to stop using homophobia as an excuse to ABC's actions, as well as the actions of other media outlets. It's more about the 'individuality' that Lambert displays rather than his sexuality that needs to be censored, because again, in this case his gender and sexuality is irrelevant.
Also, he is not representing the gay community in a positive manner at all, anyway. He deserves to be censored completely. He does not belong on any kind of media outlet as long as he behaves as if his sexuality gives him permission to be the annoying person that he is.
Good! I don't think it's fair to impose that kind of shit on a show that is being watched by many different age groups. I'm no prude and I'm all for equal rights and against prop 8, but I don't want my daughter to see simulated sex acts on TV done by anyone! I don't care if he was gay or straight, I wouldn't care if it was a girl and a guy or two girls. There is a time and place for that, and the AMAs wasn't it. Get over it Perez, he fucked up!
stop trying to stir up controversy where there is none. ABC should do that. People like Janet Jackson and Assbert who do things purely for shock value (NOT "artistry") should be held accountable. If they don't like it, then don't perform. It's that simple.
I think it's a good decision. Kids watch these shows also.
Instead of blaming ABC, who is very pro-gay (just look at their programming and how gay couples are portrayed on those programs), why don't you blame LAMEbert for his behavior? Of course this was going to happen. People flipped the heck out over Janet's boob, what did you think would happen after LAMEbert's bad porn show? You can't pull tricks like that.
I think gays are just mad because nobody wants to see that shit on tv.
Honey, you're so gay when you fell outta the gay tree, you hit every gay branch on the way down. then you landed on a gay man. then you did him.
Perez enough with the homophobia crap already. I know A LOT of people, myself included who would have been equally as disgusted if that had been a woman's face he'd shoved into his crotch on national television. But you seem to want to leave out that point in the performance anyway. You focus on the kiss. Hell, the kiss was a kiss, it's been done before… the kiss was NOT the problem. It was the raunchyness of the entire REST of the performance.
Inappropriate is inappropriate. Period.
I think its great that ABC is looking into this sort of thing. People have to remember that ABC is owned by Disney, and is an affiliate of the Family Channel, so their target market is families and they have to keep that in mind whenever they put anything on their channel. Its not a homophobic attack, so quit freaking out about that, its just them considering the feelings of their target market. Nobody wants to watch that sort of thing on TV with their family, whether its man on man, woman on woman, or man and woman, its just not appropriate for TV.
Why are people comparing this to Madonna and Britney's kiss? If two men kissed on tv, it would not have been censored either. The whole point of this is that he simulated oral sex on national tv. It would have been censored if two girls had done the same thing. Or a girl and a guy. Quit making it into something it's not.
Good for them! I don't care if he's gay, straight, bi, or other…his performance was so not ok for regular TV and NOT ok for all ages…
I agree with them. They need to know what is going to be going out on THEIR channel. They are absolutely right about their audience. It's not cable TV.
What do I think? I think he needs to take responsibility for his actions and suffer the consequences. After the Janet Jackson tit scandal, he should have known Americans are a puritanical bunch. And you need to stop playing the fucking homophobia card every time something you don't agree with involves gays. This would have happened to anyone who performed the same actions on live TV (again, Janet Jackson). You're a self-righteous twat who seems to think it's ok to spread hate and discrimination as long as it's you. Go fuck yourself.
its about time the networks pulled the plug on the lewd shows.
Hats of to ABC. Simulating oral sex isn't appropriate on the major networks. Pay per view, sure. HBO, yep. Major networks, think again. Vulgar and nasty and skank.
It's not about homophobia. I don't give a flip who slurps what. But I DON'T like public displays of affection that exceed hand holding or simple kiss. And flamers who are out to shock and disgust might as well get a room. That's really more the beef with most of the people i know. Tramp and skank is tramp and skank whether straight or gay or crooked or animated.
Perez you need to understand that ABC is respecting there viewers and what their viewers want to see. It really is a shame that a lot of America still is pretty homophobic but ABC has to respect its viewers or they will lose them. Its a business.
You know, I don't think this was really about the guy on guy kissing, though everyone is blurbing it out and focused on that as far as television is concerned, the thing that was inappropriate that many have found offensive was the stimulated oral sex movements, groping of women, etc. The kiss was just whatever to everyone I have talked to straight or gay. The sadder part about all this is this is what the controversy is on when really the singing in itself for Adam sucked that night when we know he could do much better as seen on American Idol.
1000% SUPPORT ABC's decision!!!!!!!!!
THERE IS HOPE…
*cogniscent
seriously, who is writing this crap? perez, hire people that can actually SPELL.
I think it's a great idea. I love music, movies, and tv but I have become a little traditional since becoming a Mom. And truthfully I dont like watching some of these performances with my son if they are too provacative. Some performances are not appropriate for prime time main stream TV. If it were a vegas show or a show where u know everyone is there to be shocked, then yes go all out - but not on TV where we are watching to be entertained - not shocked. The network has to think of everyone- not just the audience that is used to this "shock" entertainment.
Stop the "homophobia" comment shit, Perez people have business to run so they try to take the middle road
EAT IT, deviants! This decision also go to show that a hell of a lot more than 1,000 people complained to ABC! Effing liars!
All of this because 1,500 people out of the millions that watched complained? Some democracy we live in. I'm all for not suppressing musical artistry; but it's time these "artists" get a clue that gyrating around on stage like some trashy slut in heat has nothing to do with musicianship or talent. If you can sing, do it. If you can play an instrument, do it. If you got wood for one of your dancers or band members, save it for the bedroom not for the stage.
I completely agree with ABC. My daughter was sitting there watching the show with me, and it was very embarrassing, to say the least. Even a 13 year old knows that's nasty, guy on guy, girl on guy, whatever! It's not always a "GAY" thing, Perez. It's "taste", something his performance lacked.
I don't think it is homophobia thats triggering all the controversy… I honestly think its a matter of class. I honestly think Adam is causing people to think homosexuality is vulgar, when it's not. Had he had more class during his performance, It would have reflected positively for the gay community instead of triggering so much negative feedback. It reflects negatively on all LGBT people. He needs to set a positive example not a vulgar distasteful one. who cares if britney and madonna did it seriously.
i agree. i feel it should be censored to a point. the madonna on Britney kiss was mild compared to Gaybert. i don't need to see him grinding another guys face in his crotch or sticking his tongue down another dudes throat. actually i thought that was a chick and even then it was wrong. sure he says he was last and it was late but don't he factor in that the time zones are different and while it was late there it wasn't late somewhere else. or people who tivo/dvr it. i do think they should be PC about it. it is not cable. if it was it would be different but it isn't. public television is pushing it
Who does he think he is? Madonna. He won American Idol. He's crap and can't decide to do disgusting stuff like that right off the bat. I'm certain that even the gay community was offended to have this guy make them look like a bunch of disgusting hoes. Who pretends to suck a guys cock on live TV anyway????
ABC is right. And hell yeah its censorship, and they have to do it or this guy will start performing naked next!
GET OVER IT,AMERICA DOESNT WANT TO SEE SIMULATED GAY BLOW JOBS ON FAMILY TV.
Tinged with homophbia? Get the fuck out of here with that shit. What he did was disgusting. He had that dude's face grinding into his crotch. If it were a man or woman it would be nasty. He sure as hell would not of done it on A.I., the family show that got him started.
Perez, you fat fuck you're probably mad because it wasn't your face. You want him to do it to you next? Is that why you're advocating nasty?
It has NOTHING to do with "suppressing artistry" or homophobia. An extremely ignorant statement to make I think. A channel that is accessible to EVERYONE should be aware and know what is going to happen. Lambert's performance was disgraceful. I wouldn't want my child seeing ANYONE regardless of their sexual orientation doing what he did on stage honestly I didn't even want to see it myself. Perhaps if it was a different channel and NOT at the AMA's there would be less backlash. Did he really expect the world to just sit back and enjoy the "show"?
I think I am sick of hearing you bitch about homophobia, that's what I think!!! Get over it….NO ONE WANT TO SEE A GUY SHOVE ANOTHER GUY'S FACE IN HIS CROTCH ON STAGE. That is not homophobia, that is having taste and dignity. Not even in France would you see that shit on TV and we are more sexually liberal and more accepting of sexuality than most other countries.
I just feel like this isn't an issue of Adam Lambert being Gay or Straight. The fact of the matter is that the performance was inappropriate for ABC viewers of the AMA's. I mean you have to believe that. The whole oral sex thing, I don't care WHO was "performing" it on him, man or woman, it was inappropriate for the time slot and network. You have to think about the audience viewing this program.
you're a fucking moron perez. that performance was not network-acceptable. you can keep trying to make it about his sexuality all you want. it simply isn't the case.
I agree, I think its hypocritical and homophobic. There is nothing wrong with a kiss, I dont see how it is okay for a man and a woman, a woman and a woman to kiss, but not a man and a man. I say Adam is a pioneer who should be applauded for pushing the boundries of our society's comfort level and tolerance. Thank you Adam.
If this was any other artist… except for Gaga it wouldnt be such a big deal to you Perez. If ABC wants to protect themselves from lawsuits or fines then thats their right. I mean its the parents responsibilty to show thier kids what they want to show them and to tlk about things they may not agree with. But ABC has the right to cover their ass because no matter what there will always be atleast one person out there that will complain and who will want to sue or make a big fuss about things. So its a good business decision for ABC. If you owned a television station perez you would do the same thing becuase if you didnt you would be broke or out of business.
This has nothing to do with homphobia for God's sake. It was inappropriate, period. Don't make it something it's not. It was too much for a lot of people, and didn't belong there.
Get off this homophobia thing. I wouldn't want to watch any simulated sex whether it be man/woman, woman/woman, man/man, whatever. It's not the place for it.
Good for ABC, it's their network… and seriously since when do you qualify as a homo just because you don't want to see a guy making out with another guy? I don't want to see straight people going at it and I don't want to see gay people going at it either.
Good for ABC, if Lambert thought what he was doing was okay why didn't he rehearse it that way? Because he knew it wasn't acceptable, it was disgusting.
Gay or not gay his performance was pathetic….
I dont think this is homophobia, it was just a really tacky performance, and it wouldnt matter if it was a girl or a guy. The kissing was pretty standard and at least Adam is actually gay as oppossed to that geriatric Madonna and Britney and Aguilera who did it for cheap attention. The oral sex was just cringeworthy and pointless. I asked a couple who live above me and are gay what they thought and they thought it was sleazy and desperate, one of them said "its a pity he didnt put as much effort into his vocal". Its not a homophobia, its a severe lack of imagination on the performers part and that should be punishable offence for any artist regardless of sexuality.
I was a huge fan of Adam Lamberts on Idol.. and so was my 8 year old daughter, which is why we DVR'd the performance so we could watch it together the next day. Imagine my surprise when I'm sitting there with my daughter watching him shove someones head into his crotch. Nice. I was utterly disappointed in him. Nothing to do with Gay or Straight, and the kissing didn't bother me, it was other stuff that was so upsetting. Still a fan of Glambert, but not happy about his performance, he knew his fans from Idol would be watching, and he knew a lot of those fans consist of little children. Would I take my daughter to a concert? No, cause I'd expect it to be not appropritate for kids, but I don't expect a TV broadcast aired on ABC to be so distasteful. All show, they were saying "Later…Adam lambert" knowing that people would see that and stay up for the end, so saying it aired late at night doesn't cut it. Sorry Perez, Im usually with you, but I have to disagree on this one.
So, ABC wasn't homophobic when they let the realistically, no-name Lambert, close the show… but when he added surprise multiple simulated sexual acts and ABC received complaints which they acted upon, they became homophobic? I don't see it.
LOL! Typical conservative cun*ts all in an uproar.
You're such a fucking moron. Lambart was out of line and it makes perfect sense for ABC to want performers to stick to agreed upon material. Getting pissed off b/c a gay man is getting treated badly isn't stupid b/c it has nothing to do with his being gay, it has to do with his stimulation oral sex and giving the finger. Hell, the kiss wasn't even that big a deal except for the poor guy getting it looked like he was all kinds of 'what the fuck?!'
Homophobia, says the "you're not a f**king artist … you're a f**king f*ggot." Porkez.
Re: JujuBean114 – I don't think it means anything to the gay community. I think it's just an idiot who fucked up who happens to be gay. It's not about equal rights, if he did this on MTV and all this was happening, I could see equal rights. If he just grabbed a dudes crotch like Janet did on her performance, I can see it being about equal rights…but no one else gave the finger to the audience on national tv, nor did they stimulate giving head.
The entire show, the announce at the AMA's touted Adam's show as shocking, and edgy. It built it up so much, but they used the word shocking many times. If that didn't warn the prudes who called in to complain, what else do they want? If ANYONE ever watched Adam's pre Idol work, they should have known what they were in for. IDIOTS.
I definitely respect this !
Its not the fact that it was homophobia, its the fact that it was not planned!
Britney and Madonna was planned, adam labert WAS NOT
i don't think its a gay right issue… anyone simulating oral sex is inappropriate- besides, you bring up the madonna spears kiss- that received just as much press as this! if a female performer grabbed a male and started making out with him she would be slutty- it's not because he's gay, its because he's inappropriate
Adam tried way too hard that night, I used to like him but now I'm not sure I do
I think they are making the right decision, and when he says parents should control what the kids watch, that is true, however, as someone in the mediaa light, its their job to make sure people know whats going on, and that it isnt suitable for kids, its his responsibility to let the views know, and there are more people against him, its him, not everyone else problem
hey fat body, not everybody loves cock as much as you! maybe think from a parents point of view you stupid fat disgusting fuck and you may realize they don't want their children watching some guy or girl shoving someones head into their nuts. get over yourself you fat pile of shit!
Oh, please. Sometimes your cheerleqading for your personal causes leads you into the dark woods. Since when has simulating a face fuck been "artistry"? Have we fallen that far as a culture.
The dude is lame and tacky, not artistic.
Not everything is homophobic Perez. What it comes down to is money. ABC doesnt want to lose viewers and shit, so they will put limitations on what performers can and can no do. Sometimes you need to get off your high ass fucking horse.
