Will Lady GaGa Change Grammy Rules?
Seems to us like they should be changed!
Lady GaGa has sold over 1.5 million copies of her debut album The Fame, but is ineligible for the Best New Artist category at this year's Grammy Awards because of her nomination for Just Dance last year in the Best Dance Recording Category.
Last year, Jennifer Hudson shared a similar fate as she was snubbed from the Best New Artist category since she was previously nominated in the Outstanding Motion Picture Soundtrack Compilation category for Dreamgirls.
And now Grammy president Neil Portnow is addressing the controversy, stating:
"This particular issue in the Best New Artist category is on our radar and I would expect changes to address it in next year's voting."

If she was nominated last year then she isn't new. And the category is for the best NEW artist. So it makes sense that she can't be nominated. Just because she is Lady Gaga does not make her more special than everyone else. The category is to allow the NEW artists a chance to win.

There may be a surprise tomorrow, I heard the board met on this issue this year some weeks ago in hopes of applying the rules change this year. She is lucky the Canadian release (August 2008) of her album does not count because that would have made he ineligible for any Album awards this year. The American release was in Grammy's time frame of Oct. 2008. I predict 8 nominations.

This is a rule that has changed many times - it is not that suddenly because of your beloved Lady Gaga (not GaGa) it is being addressed. This is just the latest situation in an ongoing problem with the Grammys.
They change the rules all the time so it's not like they are doing anything extreme there.. but the logic of changing the rules with an obvious winner in mind seems like a pretty blatant way of saying "This whole thing is fixed anyways." I'm a huge fan of Gaga and she has had a fabulous year so I'm sure she'll be nominated for plenty of other awards.

Lady GaGa is very talented, and had she been nominated (or won) "Best NEW Artist" for the 2008 year, then I would agree, BUT she wasn't. Since she wasn't nominated last year, when she was "NEW", she shouldn't be for the 2009 year.

Gaga's benefitting from my theory of the U2 phenomena. That's where there's such a scarcity of decent new artists that they look amazing in comparison to anything else that's been assembly lined onto the radio lately by record honchos.

Grammy’s are about the quality of the music, not sales. GaGa makes catchy “of the moment” pop. She has ripped on the style of Madonna, Bowie, Grace Jones and Cyndi Lauper and isn’t anything new or revolutionary. Madonna wasn’t nominated for best new artist in 1983 and she started a pop revolution (GaGa, Rihanna, Britney, Gwen, Kylie, Janet and countless others still make the same kind of dance pop she has been making since 1983). To change the rules just b/c she like GaGa is a joke. Although she has made some great pop songs (Poker Face, Telephone) the rest sound the same and her music has little depth or meaning. When she starts writing about topics that mean something maybe she’ll deserve a Grammy, until then she’s just another dance diva to me. The point is her record company put her up for a Grammy for Just Dance last year in the best dance recording category b/c they felt she was a one hit wonder with little potential. That was a risk they took, so now they should be rewarded for making a mistake? Rules are rules man, we don’t change them b/c we like a blond with a catchy beat.

Lady Gaga was nominated for a Grammy Last Year when her single "Just Dance" was released. One song was out, so at that point she wasn't truly a 'known' artist so she really didn't have a shot at winning last year. She is technically a new artist for 2009 because this is the year she became popular. So, technically speaking, she is a New Artist of 2009.
