Author James Frey Opens Up About The Death Of His Son

World Aids Day was yesterday and author James Frey wrote a very touching essay on losing his young son. Frey writes:
"When I think of (RED), I think of Leo, and I think of the children who are dying. I think of the pain and misery their families will feel when they are gone. I think of what my wife and I have felt and lived with and experienced and I never want anyone else to have to experience the same things.
I think of the fact, and it is a fact, that many of these children could be helped and saved and given life. They can find their dreams and pursue them. They can know joy and beauty and love. They can take their first steps and learn their first words and go to school and have their first dates. My son never got to do any of those things."
In celebration of World Aids Day, Frey and Bugaboo stroller company teamed up to create a one-of-a-kind stroller that is up for bid on eBay now.
And 100% of the proceeds will go to the Global Fund which finances AIDS grants in Africa.

Let's hope it sells for big money.

It's World AIDS Day (not Aids) - can't you people get anything right?
That's so sad that his son die may he rest in peace.
As a professional journalist and a gay man you should know that AIDS is always in ALL CAPS! It's not 'Aids' ya moron. You should be embarrassed.
Leonard was his pseudo father, not his son.
Wow, it was NOT his son that died. "Leo" is actually Leonard; a good friend of his that died from AIDS.
My heart breaks for him.
Re: the short chick in the back – His son Leo died from spinal muscular atrophy when he was 11 days old. I don't know the scoop on the other guy.
Sad story but should I know who this is?
This is the same fucking dude who lied his ass off in his so-called memoir "A Million Little Pieces". Leonard was supposedly his mentor at the rehab clinic the book is centered around. "Supposedly", because by the time questions about the authenticity of the book arose, dude died of AIDS. I can't believe a word out of this guy's mouth. He even lied abot a girlfriend commiting suicide because he couldn't get to her in time to save her from an OD.
Heartbreaking.
Nice words Jim, but it ain't all about you. It's about AIDS and somehow you turn it around to you. Shame on you.
Wow. James - did not know. So sorry to hear of this. Also Oprah treated you poorly and you did not deserve her wrath.
Re: sobrietyisacrutch – Who cares. The death of a child is unimaginable. Don't disrespect his grief it is genuine even if nothing else is.
This is the guy who makes a living lying about things much like Al Gore does. Are you sure this is true Perez?
Re: Snookietoe – I don't agree that he was treated poorly. She helped his book become a blockbuster, and he basked in the critical acclaim and certainly collected the royalties. He lied, plain and simple. Oprah had to try and reclaim HER credibility after the fiasco. I saw it all go down on The Larry King Show.
Of course, the loss of a child is a devastating blow, and my sympathies go out to him–this time.
Re: Snookietoe –
Oprah gave this guy a MASSIVE chance he it big after appearing on her Book Club and all the time he was a LIAR. He deserved the grilling Oprah gave him - the issue of his son dying is completely separate.
This thing doesn't sit right anyway - his son didn't die of AIDS ??? It seems like this is about him, rather than the issue (or trying to get sympathy coz his 'career' is in the doghouse).
This guy is a huge fucking liar and I would like to think this is karma paying him back after taking the world's $$ from his MADE UP story that was all lies.
Re: Novel1 – under no circumstances should the tragic death of one's child be looked upon as "karma" for the parent's actions. What a disgusting thing to think.
Regardless of the controversy his book ignited, he is an amazing writer. He named his son after Leonard. Saying the sons death is karma is the most horrible thing I have ever heard. You should be ashamed of yourself.
despite all the controversy around this man and his books, he is a brilliant writer. people get too much into the fact, when it's all about the novel taking you into the story. so what he exaggerated? leave it be.
and, i had no idea his son died. may he rest in piece, and my sympathies go out to him and his wife.
AWE thats sad but Im so glad hes doing this work for ppl, this benefits in sSoooo many ways, go You/Frey
OK haters this is the scoop….
Leo was his 11 day old son that died of a neuromuscular disease that was genetic.
Leonard was his father figure that died of AIDS.
Chances are he named the son after the father figure, both passed, one of AIDS and he had the opportunity to do something charitable…
He did have a girlfriend that allegedly killed herself, however, not in the time frame he wrote about.
YES he lied, but I sincerely doubt he would make such a public declaration, especially in the wake of the controversy, that could easily be proven. Generally people don't lie about losing a child.
Despite everything he is a brilliant writer, the books were amazingly well written and when you break it down, it may not have been all his personal story… but they are someone's.
Just sayin….
Hook, Line and Sinker. Y'all just fell for another preposterous lie from James Frey.
