In Nazi Mystery: Twins from Brazil, National Geographic Explorer investigates the mind-boggling occurrence of multiples in a German community deep in Brazil.
In just a one mile radius, there are 44 pairs of twins in the 80 families, most are blond, blue-eyed twins, a rate nearly 1,000% above the global average!!!
Many believe that this phenomenon is the result of escaped Nazi scientist Joseph Mengele, who may have continued his experiments to build an Aryan master race in this town.

There are 80 or so families within a 1 and 1/2 sq mi. area and 44 pairs of twins among them. It's 1000% more twins than the global average. There was no mention of the blond-haired, blue-eyed ones.
umm, you make it seem like they're all blonde with blue eyes, which is clearly not the case.
But other than that this is pretty crazy, I'm surprised this hasn't come up sooner!

The "Aryan race" doesn't exist. Aryan is a term used to describe languages of Northern India as well as languages of Iran. Just like the Swastika, the Nazis stole the term and perverted it into something completely different than what it truly is. Let's simply call the race the Nazis wanted what it would have actually been, the inbred race.

Re: amandolin – I saw this as well. Mengele "may" have injected village mothers in the 1960s with growth hormone, but it's unsubstantiated at this point. In addition, the injections would have only affected babies born to the treated mothers, not their subsequent descendants. The people of this village come from a small pool of ancestors with twinning genes, and the genes have become preserved in the population.

Maybe it's just because they live in a small, somewhat isolated town. The gene to carry twins is dominant and they all keep marrying each other, increasing the number of twins living there.

Identical twins are not hereditary. The egg just splits for some reason and medical experts have not determined how to predict when and who will have the egg that splits to create another baby. Fraternal twins are hereditary on the mothers side. Some women release two eggs, sometimes by nature, sometimes by drugs. I'm not sure in the story if they said how many sets of fraternal twins are in this community…..that's the telling number!

This Nazi experiment rumor has been around forever. Firstly, the twin phenomenon has been happening since that area was settled by just a few families… before WWII. The incidence of twins has been happening ever since… back when this supposed Nazi experiment was happening, they didn't know about DNA or gene therapy, which would have been needed in order to ensure twins kept being born after the experiment was over. This is a case of founder effect… out of those few families that lived there, one or two of them had twins run in the family and as these few families intermarried over time, the gene was distributed thru the population.
There was a superb movie made in the 70's called "The Boys from Brazil' which is all about this…..starring Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier based on the book by Ira Levin.

In the south of Brazil there are lots of european communities, Gisele Bündchen is from the south of the country too. Not the typical idea of a brazilian girl, right? Because there's no "typical" in a country so big and mixed.

Re: brinjak – the reason why these actresses have twins is because they are over the age of 35…the body knows its close to menopause and knows that its a last chance at birth so the body will naturally try to overcompensate by having twins…and since every actress is so busy with their careers in their 20's and 30's they start having babies later in life
