Hollywood Stays Afloat In 2009

Well, while the entire economy is spiraling downwards, there's one industry that's managed to dodge the poor-house bullet!
Hollywood!
Box office ticket sales are up an impressive 8% for 2009, with $9.48 billion earned since January!!!
People have to escape from their problems somehow, right????
The earnings for 2009 are mere days away from bypassing 2008's record-setting $9.64 billion in ticket sales, with the releases of Sherlock Holmes, Avatar and Invictus just around the bend.
Have U been going to the movies more in 2009 than in years past????

Good!
first comment!
well can they use this 9.48 billion to help the economy.
Strangely, did not go to as many movies as last year but this is the time of the year I go to the most movies in an attempt to see all the Oscar nominated and Golden Globe nominated films.
Yah, when you're unemployed, it's a nice get-a-way from the constant job hunting. With the millions of US folks unemployed, I'm not suprised a bit at this box-office tidbit. I see about 1 movie a week — cheap entertainment.
so sad, considering all the rehashes and remakes being shat out by the major studios. they're probably making profit only because ticket prices have gone way up.
Another remake and another example of blatant nepotism. How original.
I actually have!! I've seen alot of movies this year, plus I saw THIS IS IT and New Moon twice, I think its fun to go to a theater and just totally get lost in a movie!!!
They should use number of tickets sold as a measure, not dollar amount.
Re: MP – Sales were up 9% but attendance was up 3% so most of it was due to higher ticket prices. And to put the Box office sales into perspective people spend twice as much on pet food each year ($20 billion)
LOWER TICKET PRICES & PULL MORE PEOPLE> WAKE UP! ALSO MAKE SOME DECENT FILMS. with people like me & Perez & Paris -Musical Conmedies I mean Comedies you know, fun with music etc,,,
you shouyld have the highest number of responses on this but it shows you who really is at all motivated….
I saw a lot movies over the Summer: Wolverine, Star Trek, UP, Terminator 4, Transformers 2, HARRY POTTER…so I know some of that money is mine.
Its actually not surprising in the least. During the Great Depression in the 1930's, Hollywood was the only business to increase sales year after year! If the Great Depression didnt touch Hollywood, a recession surely is not.
yea, but being a crew member on indi films is tough. it was way better in 2004/5!
