I'm a big Madonna fan but can't deny that Mariah is a legend and her voice was once amazing. I still think she's a better singer than 95% of the top pop/R&B stars out there and she still can be awesome live. And Perez is completely biased b/c her album got good reviews from Rolling Stone and other credible publications.
And as far as some of you saying "GaGa is the new Queen"…thats the most laughable statement I've heard in a long time. When GaGa is around for 30 years, sells 200 million plus albums and becomes the number 1 (Madonna) or number 2 (Mariah) best selling female artist in history we'll talk…until then she's another pop star making the same kind of music that Madonna essentially started and has been making since 1982.
She's hitting the road? Doesn't that take stamina? I love her voice but gurlfriend is sooo high maintenance. If someone isn't there to pull the string on her gyroscope, it just stops. I read she wanted Buckingham Palace to change the lighting on the Palace to help promote her new album. Uh yeah….she needs more people around her to keep her real and grounded. She has a great voice, but seems rather flaky strange.

The point is, Madonna may be the highest selling female…Mariah may be up there as well. Their success doesn't deem as failures other artists who don't sell as well. It actually makes me appreciate those artists listed much more. I love listening to a great artist that many people don't know that well…it's almost like my little secret. The only reason I get on Madonna fans a lot is because all they know are numbers and sales figures.

This third group I have added while not as much as an influence on me as the first and second groups still all had CDs or a CD at one time I felt was worth buying and enjoyed. Some I just own a greatest hits from as their cassettes have long since been thrown out. Some are fluff and some dead serious artists.
I have still stayed away from the current names so often in the diva debates although I own albums by every one of them (I have 315 Madonna songs on my I-pod for instance, we can disagree there), and although I expanded into the 80's I have rarely listed 90s or new century artists. There is just so much out there to enjoy.
I am a Kate Bush fanatic and own all her CD's and her Box Set (which is all her CDs plus). Nobody I know ever mentions/knows Jane Siberry. Toni Childs is incredible.
I own a ton of Maria Mckee.
Women outnumber men in my collection 2 to 1 and that is pretty much in all genres from hip hop to country, folk to soul, etc.
Best album since Butterfly. I don't know why you're such a hater Perez. Seems like you can only appreciate music when it comes from Lady Gaga. Although I'm a fan, I swear you are so far up her ass it's ridiculous. Mariah will do fine. I went to her Emancipation tour and she was so on point the entire time. Great show.

I actually don't hate Madonna. Can't say I love her, but I don't hate her. I do like some of her stuff (funny, but the stuff I do love from her are the most unpopular stuff among her fans..i.e., her EROTICA era, her debut album, etc.). I just get annoyed by her fans who always seem to use her success as an argument to negate someone else's success. Dusty Springfield, for example, hasn't had 1/10th of Madonna's success, but my God, that woman's voice moves me so much more than any of these current artists ever will. You're comparing two of the most different singers that could ever be compared. Madonna does well globally, because her music is danceable, feel-good pop with great hooks that does well with people worldwide. It's the same formula that the Bee Gees and Abba used to gain international success. Mariah has a more urban, American R&B sound that appeals to people in this country. There are quite a few North American artists that aren't that popular at all in the UK or internationally: Stevie Nicks, Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan, Streisand, Pat Benatar, etc. have had moderate success overseas. I wouldn't write them off as failures.
As for Madonna, for the sake of fair arguing, she peaked in terms of album sales with TRUE BLUE and THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION. Those are her biggest albums. Any individual album released after that barely sold half of what those two sold individually, and you can't blame the internet, because LIKE A PRAYER through BEDTIME STORIES were released before downloading killed record sales.

First of all, there is no official tracker of international record sales, the IFPI is a crooked organization, the RIAA only tracks SHIPMENTS in the US, and Soundscan does not account for albums that were sold via record clubs, used CDs stores, etc. If you take Mariah’s & Madonna’s average sales per albums, they’re about equal. Shania Twain’s average sales per album are much higher, yet she’s only released 4 albums. Madonna has had more international singles, which may account for her high numbers, but her highest selling albums were in the 80s. To the person who said Mariah’s company exaggerates sales: Madonna was the CEO of her record company at one time, a company that lost money. Could it be her sales are exaggerated ? Record companies aren’t required to provide sales info down to the last album sold, and a lot of countries have shady to non-existent tracking of record sales.
