The Ray Festa Melanoma Foundation is furious with Rosie O'Donnell's public comments on television saying that she "lives to tan" and that "exposure to the sun isn't dangerous."
That doesn't sound right to us!
The Foundation calls her statements "ill-informed" and "irresponsible." Now they want her to do a public-service announcement retracting her comments. Marisa Marchetto, supporter of the Ray Festa Melanoma Foundation, says:
"Going out into the sun without protection is as, or even more dangerous, than having unprotected sex."
Yikes!
Don't forget the sunscreen AND a condom!

STFU!!! Read the ingredients in sunscreen, most of them are cancer causing. I will take the sun and its beautiful vitamin D any day before I put on that shit. Sun is now required to prevent cancer so enjoy!!
Funny how new research hasn't reached these dermatologists. Glad they aren't my doctors. New research suggests sun bathing is not directly linked to skin cancer/melanoma. Tanning beds yea as they are direct uv radiation without the other spectrums of light. But natural sun tanning won't raise your risk. Skin cancer and melanoma are the same as any cancer as in they just "happen". Read up on what cancer is before you judge someone. Rosie has American Indian in her so her skin is an olive tone giving her better resistance to the sun than say a fair skinned person that would blister. Sun poisoning and blistering caused by over exposure are more likely to give u skin cancer and melanoma than moderate sun bathing as the cells are having to be repaired leaving room
for a possible mutation.
I really just wish ppl would get off her back. Everyone has a right to an opinion based on ones own life experiences. She's also very well researched. I listen to her Sirius/XM show which exemplifies this.

For God's sake…someone with faulty third hand info…if anyone listens to Rosie's Sirius radio show, she said last week that she always uses sunscreen when she goes out into the sun…even said what brand (neutrogena). Why do all the other gossip sites get their info up to three hours before you do? I think your days are numbered….

I think Marisa Marchetto's statement is more ill-informed and irresponsible than what Rosie said. She never said she didn't use sunscreen. But comparing unprotected sex with not wearing sunscreen is stupid. I never hear of someone who got skin cancer for a one time exposition to the sun (or for going once to a tanning bed). But there are cases of people who get AIDS or STDs for having sex without protection even if it is only one time.
So in a way she can be sending a dangerous message out there. Because she is not necessarily raising awareness about one subjet (melanoma) but rather underestimating the consequences of unprotected sex.
I love that all these people who are trying to prevent getting skin cancer by never going out in the sun without sunscreen will have great skin when they're old, but they'll be bowed and brittle and die of compound hip fractures at the tender age of sixty because while they never got skin cancer, they also never got any vitamin D.
You just can't win.
I understand the Melanoma Foundation's point, but you need a small amount of sunlight in order to get Vitamin D. Most North Americans are Vitamin D deficient.
First of all i would like to stay tanning and burning are 2 different things. It is a known fact that the best way to get vitamin D is through natural sunlight which personally i find is most effective in a tanning bed which is CONTROLLED unlike the sun outside. And i think everyone is entitled to their opinion. And why is this Marisa lady so defensive. If people really wanted to be healthy than Fast food restaurants and cigarette companies wouldn't be Billion dollar businesses. Think about it. UVlight=natural

If I were president of the Ray Festa Melanoma Foundation, I would not want her to speak on behalf of the foundation. Perhaps she is married like me and having unprotected sex with her spouse does not pose much of a threat….but it is still stupid because I do not think most people interpret it this that way.

Total Bullshit & propaganda. NATURAL sunlight does not give you skin cancer. Africans & other aboriginal people LIVE constantly in the sun & you don't see melanoma/skin cancer running rampant there. It's MANUFACTURED light & chemicals that fuck you up. My friend who loved to lay out whenever she could, Never-ever used sunblock or SPF until she took a job when she had to work outside every single day. Then she thought she'd better use the SPF 30 cream her work provided. It wasn't til AFTER she'd used the cream for MONTHS that she noticed darkening on her cheeks & uppper lip. It turned out she got Melasma. It was awful. Fortunately, she used a holistic Dr. who concluded that the CHEMICALS IN THE SUNBLOCK has baked into her skin in 95+ degree temps causing the hyperpigmentation. She stopped using the cream & after 2 yrs. her marks are finally fading. SUNBLOCK & tanning beds ARE EVIL.

OMG! I am too furious with her. She is a role model to many people still. I am a Stage 4 melanoma patient with a very limited life expectancy. I was not even a sun worshipper. She is sending the wrong message to others, so sad and a waste. She needs to think of her kids if something were to happen to her.
