Slim and trimmed Colin Firth sat down to discuss his new flick, A Single Man, in which he plays 1960s homosexual college professor George Falconer, and began to talk about the role of gay and straight actors in Hollywood.
We think he hit the nail right on the head!
Colin commented:
"If you're a straight actor who takes on the role of a gay man, it's obviously not the same as being one in this business. I think there are still some constraints against being openly gay. It is to do with whatever sexual taboos are in place. In Hollywood, I know that some actors are far more circumspect about keeping that secret hidden. There are not a lot of openly gay leading men."
No, there aren't, but we've got a list a mile long of ones we're pretty positive are feeling the constraints of the closet.

I didn't read that as PH outing CF, or CF outing CF. I read it as CF suggesting that some leading men don't feel comfortable about coming out b/c of what it might do to their "image". Thats a shame. How come straight people can't support the homosexual community without it meaning they are secretly gay? I know plenty of people that are against gay marriage that aren't homophobes and have plenty of gay friends. And in the same token I have plenty of friends that support it wholly yet are not bi nor are they gay - they just understand the issues. I know you make your money off of gossip - I get that and to a certain degree get it, if it remains just that - gossip. It's unfortunate but he's right. For whatever reason, people just can't seem to accept an actor playing straight characters if they know he's gay in reality so admitting it would limit their career. It's odd because people don't seem to have a problem with straight actors taking on roles as gay characters and if they do that and do it well then it's like people think they really stretched their acting chops in some significant way. Rupert Everett just said that gay men should stay closeted. After hearing what he said, I could understand why some actors might choose to stay silent on the topic.

Your desire to "out" celebrities is not conducive to equality between gays and straights. Why should gay people have to come out… much less be forced out by some hateful gossiper?
I'm gonna start by saying that Perez is usually an idiot and is so militant about his gay agenda that he's incapable of being objective or intelligent about it. I also have to say that I didn't get the impression of a threat from Perez about "outing" anyone. True, Perez needs famous gay people to use for his "gay is great" stance (whether the famous people want to be used for it is another matter entirely). I can buy Neil Patrick Harris as a leading man type because he's not a flamer; he's got some tact, dignity, and doesn't need his sexuality to define who he is (unlike Perez). But the same cannot be said for the Lamebert types. Could you see him as a heterosexual romantic lead? Hello no. Advice to Perez: Go back to being a regular gossip. Your causes (donate in this economy? You're an idiot!) and your constant harping on gay is old, tired, and working against you.

I of course agree that you should be able to be free and be yourself but let's face a reality. Lately acting is not only about the work it includes what "fans" think about you or the image they have about you. I know it should be about the work and for example let's say Tom hanks is gay I don't think it would really affect his career AT ALL since he's a really good actor and what we think aboyt him is based on his work. However, i think it would be awkward for some. For example, I'm a huge fan of Ricky Martin, and and I'm not confirming he's guy…but c'mon….I wouldn't mine but….have you heard a song in which he's not talking about he's love for women? ok maybe like 2 or 3 in his entire carrer? or Tom criuse or someone who has made a fortune making women fall in love with them. 'm not saying he's gay again I'm sure he's not (maybe) but Let's face it Brad Pitt is a HORRIBLE actor! he just is who he is for being so HOT at the beginning of his career…for people like that I understand why they would be worried to come out….I'm not saying they have to stay in the closet but they made the mistake (some of them at least) to attack the female market

Of course he's not going to confirm names and it's sad that you would even consider suggesting it. Unless someone is working to undermine the civil rights of LGBT people or find some other way to harm them, they should not be outed until they are good and ready to be open about it themselves.

Maybe not so much in major capitals like London and Paris (which compare to New York and LA and San Francisco)—but believe me, anti-gay sentiment is alive and well throughout Europe. This is why every Brit boy-band member who comes out of the closet (and it always seems to be a big news item when one does) says that he hopes he can provide a glimmer of hope for every suicidal gay kid in the UK by doing so.
