People are getting pretty rilled up about MTV's newest exploitative fun hour!
The Jersey Shore is basically The Real World, but all the housemates are Italian-American, self-proclaimed "guidos" and "guidettes." They have greasy hair, fake tans, and nicknames! All-and-all, nothing too exciting as far as we're concerned, but some other folks are in an effin uproar over it!
Protesters are calling the show "controversial" and are implementing a boycott. The Italian-American group UNICO has asked members to complain to MTV's advertisers and there is even some talk about MTV producers receiving death threats!
Jeez! Cool your jets, people! It's just a TV show!
Obviously, it's not, and New York Post critic Linda Stasi decided to blast the show on Monday to prove that point:
"('Jersey Shore' furthers) the popular TV notion that Italian-Americans are gel-haired, thuggish ignoramuses with fake tans, no manners, no diction, no taste, no education, no sexual discretion, no hairdressers (for sure), no real knowledge of Italian culture and no ambition beyond expanding steroid- and silicone-enhanced bodies. Would that programing ever have been allowed if the group were African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Jewish people?"
Probably not, but that doesn't make the show wrong. We'd like to quote Spencer Pratt via his Twitter, if we may:
"Linda Stasi you should change your name to Linda Boring if you can't be entertained by young Italian-Americans enjoying youth and partying!"
And besides, this is all for nothing anyway. The show only got 1.4 million viewers. It's going nowhere fast! The more you all talk about it, the more likely it will STAY on the air.

They aren't saying ALL Italians are like this (and those that fall for that are far too gullible and uneducated to watch television) and call themselves "Guidos" and "Guidettes", not "Italians"…sure their background comes up, but these hilariously immature sluts do not represent our culture. i think that the real problem lies with the people from the shore. I'm from the shore, i live here year round & i work here. This is my life & to be portrayed in the way that i am is offensive. the show is like the real world, but it doesn't give a false reprsentation of the area that the cast members are living in at the time. I mean people from the jersey shore are protective of it, and to be portrayed in this light, common anyone would be defensive. if they wanted to make a show about people visiting the shore they should of named it "Bennys at the Jersey Shore" or something along the line specifying that they are in no way shape or form from here. It just paints us in a bad light and i think anyone would be pissed.

I have been to Italy twice and love Italian culture. Without a doubt, Italian-Americans are quite different from their Old World brethren. Does the show promote stereotypes? Yes, but it also gives the characters room to express themselves. They are kinda charming.

Nobody is saying or even thinking that all Italian-Americans are like this. MTV is just poking fun at this one specific group of people that frankly are all over the place out here (I live in NY). Not everyone from NY or NJ is like that, obviously, and people in NY and NJ make fun of those people all the time, so why are they suddenly freaking out that MTV is in on the joke? If Italian-American groups or even New Jersey as a state are upset about this, they should take it up with the idiots that exemplify the stereotype, not everyone else who points it out.

I spent my summers in Stone Harbor, NJ and have family that lives in Stone Harbor, Cape May, and Cape May Courthouse, NJ. I've always called it the Jersey Shore. I've spent time there as a child, a teenager, a college student, and an adult–and I have never seen anything like what I see on the show. Thank god.
