Stem Cells Can Kill HIV!

UCLA researchers have discovered that stem cells can be engineered to kill HIV as the equivalent of a genetic vaccine! Scott Kitchen, assistant professor of medicine in the division of hematology and oncology, explains:
"We have demonstrated in this proof-of-principle study that this type of approach can be used to engineer the human immune system, particularly the T-cell response, to specifically target HIV-infected cells.
These studies lay the foundation for further therapeutic development that involves restoring damaged or defective immune responses toward a variety of viruses that cause chronic disease, or even different types of tumors."
Talk about an amazing breakthrough!
They're getting closer and closer to a cure thanks to stem-cell research!

There is a difference though between embryonic stem cell research and other stem cell research. Most of the breakthroughs in research are from adult stem cell research.

People need to stop villifying those with HIV. It is not and nevere has been a gay disease. Is everyone in Africa with HIV gay? No. No one except those who are very twisted knowingly infects themselves. If you don't use a condom you are at risk. Nearly every person I know who has been sexually active has had sex without a condom and yes it is possible to get HIV through oral sex as well. People should stop this "Oh well you asked for it" mentality. STOP making people with HIV seem like monsters! It's WRONG!
This doesn't say what kind of stem cells they are. I hope they're not embryonic. Not a political statement. Just a fact that they cause tumors and are not the cure-all that the advocates who want grant money are claiming.

This is good n all but, it's old!
For my A Level Biology coursework back in summer 2008 I did a piece on how far we are away from a cure for HIV and funnily enough this what I found, although by a different scientist. There is also a gel that is currently being tested on monkeys that is put on tampons that stops T Killer Cells going to the site of infection so HIV cannot reproduce as no other cells have the right CD4 receptors, so they die!!
I just hope they don't kill a baby in order to get them.. there are other ways of getting them.
BTW, since AIDS/HIV is largely a sexually transmitted disease, the BEST way EVER to prevent people from getting it is by practicing CHASTITY.
If this is true then it would be great. I live in south africa and we have like the highest AIDS figures in the world so imagine what a break through something like this could be here. If only it could be affordable to everyone because let's be honest now HIV/AIDS is the biggest problem in the townships and poor areas because the people there unfortunately just don't have access to education and health care.
I hope they can get an affordable cure because everyone is affected by AIDS even if you don't have it you might still know of someone that has it and it hurts to see someone you care for and love suffer.

Also, a lot of ELDERLY population spread HIV/AIDS unknowingly… they think they they aren't the group that normally "gets it", so they do not use precautions… and in a nursing home, it will spread like wild fire, well, because we know that old people have sex too, and a nursing home is a great place for HIV/AIDS to spread.

Did anyone on this post actually read the article? There is NO cure, or vaccine, or anything of the sort. It's only a theoretical possibility. "We have demonstrated in this proof-of-principle study" means they "proved" that "in theory" this might be able to work. That MILES away from any actual application or practice. Don't get me wrong, this is indeed great news, in theory, but is no where near any practical application yet. Unfortunately, like so many other "great ideas" (flying cars, vehicles that run on water, etc etc etc), all have been proven to work, some have even been created, but none are available for public consumption, and they've been known for many many years. I fear it'll be decades away before this ever happens.

condoms do not prevent sexually transmitted diseases, it can decrease your chances but it does not 100% protect you, it even says this on the box.
You know how many times the cure for cancer,aids/ hiv and other diseases have probably been found and thrown away? Billions are made each year off cancer patients, hiv/aids patients , etc.
