A solid choice.

In a new online poll, legendary actress Judy Garland has been named the top female gay icon of all time!

She was followed by Kylie Minogue and Madonna, in second and third place respectfully, and Marilyn Monroe, who came in sixth.

Where the boys were concerned, Sir Elton John was awarded the top honor, followed by Freddie Mercury, Stephen Fry, and George Michael!

Interesting.

      Hi annie :) it's a mix of their popularity with the gay community, their acceptance of gay people. If women, they are usually strong women like Bette Davis or ladies with big talent: Judy, Liza, Streisand (the "old school" gay icons). Madonna, Debbbie Harry from Blondie, Cyndi Lauper. Male icons mentioned definitley Freddie Mercury, Elton John, director John Waters….straight males: Jake Gyllenhaal, Johnny Depp come to mind.

Her life, her love, her image is what reflects a lot of gay people. her personal struggles with life are similar to people who are coming out. She was the celebrity who touched her "male" fans when people advised her not to. Judy Garland is actually the very first celebrity gay icon ever. The gay flag comes from the song "Over The Rainbow".

      Re: sneakers – Icon is such an overused term especially considering its religious origin, but in this case the definition that most closely fits is "the object of uncritical devotion".
      As to Madonna and Judy, Madonna has had bisexual experiences and it has long been speculated that Garland was bisexual as well although no proof exists to my knowledge. Neither is listed as an Icon for these reasons though.

      Re: hangook – I think she means it in the correct way. There are quite a few of the younger generation that won't really connect with Judy because she is not of their time. I agree she is the all time icon, but just as with music, movies, and other arts, over time the people that are related to change with the times and culture. Lady Gaga is more "new school" and Judy would be considered "old school". There are a couple posters on here that aren't familiar with Judy….but are with Gaga and Madonna. Just saying.

I used to love this site for the gossip, but it seems that over the past 3 years he has been steadily making it more and more about his gay agenda. Which funnily enough, there are quite a few gays that DON'T LIKE Perez or what he stands for. I also think that he's becoming a bit of a fame monster himself since most of his posts are really sucking lately and he's not putting quite the same effort into it.
