Ok, now I think breastfeeding after the appropriate age is gross as well, ut you CAN continue to breastfeed as they get older-the milk has lots of nutrients and lots of health benefits. I've heard of one lady who did it with her child until she was 9. Now before people give me shit, I've already said I think it's disgusting-but Perez is actually wrong here.

exclusively breastfed child for 5 years? Babies start on solid foods from 4 months to 6 months, though it's not recommended until 6 months. So it's not even possible, nor healthy for the baby to be exclusively breastfed for 5 yrs, but good luck to her if she wants to try!!
Besides, La Leche league tends to be full of shit, use threats and guilt if you don't breastfeed until the kid is 5.

Its actually not that strange at all. I think the cut off age is four years old thought. Americans do it too, especally people in the raw food community. Remember Maggie 'Gyllenhaul's' chracter on Away We go? She did it too.Though over the top many people do live like that. It is free, packed with nutrients, warm, taste good, and it enables children to really bond with their mothers. Of course the kids get solid food too, but they can have breast milk as long as they like as a supplement. There's nothing wrong with extended breastfeeding. However, thinking she doesn't have to make anything else for the kid to eat until he/she is five is just way beyond uninformed, it's stupid. Read a book before your kid is born, moron.
America has twisted views on breastfeeding. Other countries its normal to stop at 4, or somily have child led self weaning. Children don't even need food nutritionally until 12 months. There is no specific time frame for breastfeeding.
Now for some facts. Breastfeeding your child til approx 12-14 months is a good timing in our Western countries. As long as kids get solid foods from 6 months onwards, they are fine. Some kids do get breastfed until 2 or 3 which is also fine if mother/baby still want to. BUT in countries where there is little food, developing world, women are encouraged to breastfeed until the kid is 3 or 4 because it gives them a lot of nutrients they don't get otherwise. There it's really important to keep breastfeeding and not resort to expensive powdered milk that they can't afford !!!

I hate seeing any kind of social ostracism towards breastfeeding when it is so beneficial for children and it is dwindling in low income communities.
the AMA recommends at least 2 years of breastfeeding, with solids introduced around 1 year of age. If you continue to breastfeed for comfort and nutritional supplementation after 2 years that is totally fine as well.

I nursed my daughter for 2.5 years, but I never planned on that. It just happened…just knew I would breastfeed at least six months, and then I saw no point in stopping when I reached that point. The world average for breast feeding is 4yrs old, so nothing wrong with saying she would breast feed till he was 5. Its americans who have the hangups with breastfeeding an older child…after all that is what we have breasts for.

I remember one gal that used to take her child to the same pre-school that my son attended. And there she was breastfeeding her child in the parking lot. The teachers would not allow her to come in and BF in front of the other kids - as they were all off the bottle (which is a requirement for pre-school). Gee, he must be 12 now — wonder if he's still attached to her boob. YUK.

Yes, you people are right… breast milk is great for BABIES… BUT, a 5 year old is NOT a baby !! 5 years old is a small child… not a baby, thus time to stop the milk from the breast. I believe 1-2 years of breast milk for a baby is great… but breastfeeding a toddler with teeth or a small child is just a bit strange.

I think breast feeding is a personal preference. If she chooses to breast feed until that age so be it, it's her tit, not yours. My ex boyfriend's stepmother would still breast feed his half brother & he was about 5 yrs old. It was a bit of a shock to see happen but some women just choose to continue doing it that long.
There are people that continue to breastfeed their children until they're in their teens. I was watching a documentary of some sorts on this once. It's very odd to me… however a child of 5 cannot live off of breast milk alone. Kourtney needs to take some parenting classes.

My sister in law breastfeed her daughter until she was two which is the recommended guidlines in New Zealand. I lasted six months until my daughter got teeth, no fucking way!!

She might have been exaggerating at the 5 year thing but I am surprised tat she is even considering it–breastfeeding seems like more of a smart woman thing and not a bimbo thing–maybe I was underestimating her.
BTW, the World Health Organization's official statement is to recommend breastfeeding until age 2 and then after that as long as it is mutually beneficial. I breastfed both my boys until they were 2 and now 8 years later after the first they have still never been on antibiotics or missed school for being sick.

OK. So, let me just interject some factual information into this diatribe of stupidity. As a Lactation Consultant, I speak of that which I know.
First, no one exclusively breastfeeds only breastmilk for 5 years. No child would even allow that. I think her statement was tongue in cheek. Second, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding (breastmilk only) for 6 months, breastmilk as primary diet for AT LEAST 12 months, with solids added once baby can sit unassisted. That usually occurs at 6 months. The World Health Organization's official position is exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, and breastmilk for 2 years MINIMUM.
MOST CHILDREN WHO ARE BREASTFED WORLDWIDE WILL STOP BREASTFEEDING ON THEIR OWN BETWEEN AGES 4 AND 7. HERE IN THE US, WE AS A POPULATION ARE VERY POORLY EDUCATED ON THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMAN MILK, AND THE VITAL IMPORTANCE OF BREASTFEEDING.
Other countries seem to know what to do, yet here, we are ruled by formula companies and their agendas, and we rush babies off the breast, as if it makes them or their mothers some kind of freaks for wanting to employ self weaning AKA child led weaning, which is prominent in most other countries.
It is PERFECTLY NORMAL AND NATURAL for a 5 year old to still be breastfeeding. There is NOTHING freakish or weird about it. It might not be a choice you'd make, but that doesn't make it wrong in any way for other families who make that choice for their children.

There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding til the age of 5! I'm a very strong believer in extended breastfeeding and childled weaning… Breastmilk changes as the child gets older to support the child's needs. Practicing childled weaning is less stressful for the child. Obviously t he kid is going to need real food too eventually lol… but there is still nothing wrong with breastfeeding for an extended period of time.
