Grammy Nominated Reggae Artist Busted Over 11 Pounds Of Cocaine

Filed under: Drugs > Music Minute > Busted!

Bad news for Jamaican reggae singer and gay hater Buju Banton.

The idiot has been arrested in Miami for his involvement with trying to sell cocaine.

According to Federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents, the 36-year old Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, will be charged with conspiracy to possess over 11 pounds of cocaine with the intent to deliver!

Banton was arrested last Thursday and faces up to 20 years in jail.

Many critics are quick to mention that Banton's music is known to incite violence by calling for the attack of gays. In fact, in the '90s, his song Boom Bye Bye encouraged people to shoot homosexuals and burn them alive.

WTF?!

And this isn't the douche's first time having trouble with the law over drugs. Back in 2003, two plants of marijuana were found growing in his music studio though the idiot claimed the plants weren't his since he was just back from tour and found them there. Riiiight.

Have fun in jail!

Perez, if you knew anything, you would know that he is going to PRISON! Jail is for sentences that are 12 MONTHS or less. PRISON is for a sentence of 1 YEAR or more. I hope you enjoyed you lesson.

    6. 6

Over eleven pounds of cocaine?? Now, this is where you should have inserted your White Christmas joke, Perez. Day-um. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…

    7. 7

You should probably mention he wrote "Boom Bye Bye" when he was fifteen and because of a man/boy rape case in Jamaica, but I guess you skipped over that part. And it's sad that he's wrote many good songs yet people only mention that one when they speak of him. Am I a homophobe? No, my best friend is gay. But I am a fan and I do respect his talents as a musician and the many great songs he's written. Just look up the song "Murderer".

Like my name says, I'm literally doing this just one time so bash me or agree, I don't care.

    14. 14

Re: doingthisjustonce – who cares? I don't respect anyone who incites violence. There are so many cases of violence around the world, so I should just start writing to get people to act more violently?

he should have stayed in jamaica.

    15. 15

      his facial hair is frightening.

    16. 16

      Cocaine = dead innocent children

    17. 17

Jamaica is actually a very homophobic nation, or it used to be but it's gotten a lot better. Killing gays with guns, machetes, burning them alive in their houses…
I think you should do more blogs on this issue Perez, and I think you'd be really interested in an artist named Thomas Glave, a powerful, gay Jamaican writer.

    18. 18

BUJU!!! Yeah we islanders use to jam to his songs in high school. "Boom bye bye in a batty boy head." We didn't really know what those Jamaicans were singing about half the time but I loved their beats. Never really knew about gays either till I came here. More than 90% of Jamaicans are 'gay haters' anyway. They find them, they kill them, brutally and most people never even go to jail. Sad.

    19. 19

I love Buju Banton! I remember when I was 14 I fell in love to his song "my favorite" Bonafide love, and became a huge fan afterwards.

    20. 20

LOOK PEREZ, WHILE I DON'T AGREE WITH BUJU'S VIEWS ON GAYS, I WILL SUGGEST THAT YOU TONE DOWN THE NAME CALLING THERE BECAUSE HE'S WAY MORE HARDCORE THAN WILL. I. AM AND HIS PEOPLE WILL DO MORE THAN PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE. RELAX. DUDE'S NOT TO BE MESSED WITH.

    21. 21

My God he looks dirty. He's a dick, glad he's in trouble. Hope he gets banged in the slammer. He can write a song about it.

    22. 22

hope he says "Boom Bye Bye" to his virgin ass in jail

      23

Karma is a bitch. I am glad 11 pounds was for distribution and not for personal use. That would add up to many, many eight balls.

    24. 24

First of all, as a Jamaican living in Jamaica..let it be known that many of us believe these charges to be extremely skeptical. If it had been weed, that would make more sense. Cocaine? Something is VERY suspicious about this, trust me. Smells like a set up.

In any case though, Buju came out with 'Boom Bye Bye' in 1992, and almost 18 years later he is STILL getting flack for it. Dancehall music is an expression of our culture, and unfortunately..especially at the time..homophobia was a big part of it. Currently, it's not nearly as bad as the media purports it to be. I do NOT agree with the lyrics of the song, nor do I agree with any song that incites violence to any group of people (though many of your hip hop artists etc do the same), but people need to realise that at the time Buju's fame had not taken off, and I don't think he was really thinking that song would influence people the way it has. He has apologised MULTIPLE times, and is a great artists. Songs like 'Murderer' 'Love Sponge' and 'I Wanna Be Loved' PROVE that. Cut the man some slack. And re his facial hair…he's a practicing Rastafarian, and part of that Religion/Culture involves not cutting their hair, facial or otherwise.

    25. 25

Re: doingthisjustonce – Banton's homophobia is not a thing of the distant past as you suggest. In October 2009 Banton was quoted in news reports as saying "This is a fight, and as I said in one of my songs 'there is no end to the war between me and f—-t' and it's clear."

By nominating Banton for a prestigious Grammy Award the Recording Academy is turning a blind eye to Banton's support of deadly violence against gay people. An online petition exsists to protest his nomination.

    26. 26

Also, you would be SURPRISED at the number of openly gay men and women who are in Jamaica, and go through their lives not being harmed or ridiculed in any way. Times have changed. It took us way too long to get here, but the majority of us have. So..'trinigirl'..your statement that 90% of us are 'gay haters' is sooo completely erroneous. Take it from someone who actually lives here!

    27. 27

AHHHH,Boom Bye Bye is and always will be a classic, especially if you're caribbean or have carib blood like me,you love Buju and wish him the best.

    28. 28

I think those judging have no idea what his music represents or means. Research before you speak, especially you Perez, who apparently lead many uninformed people to believe whatever you say, even if it is false.

    29. 29

Kudos to Buju on speaking on the ills of the world.

"You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination."
"The penalty for homosexual acts is death to both parties. They have committed a detestable act and are guilty of a capital offense.'

Thankfully most AMERICANS feel the same way and continue to vote against same sex Marriage. Thank you NY SENATE for listening to the your constituents !!!

I am a Jamaican………and I say among others (alot) that Buju was FRAMED!! He was framed by gay activist who do not like him! Why would this man who just got yet ANOTHER GRAMMY NOD get caught up in that? HE would not he was FRAMED! Love Buju all the way! and you love to call people idiot well ok then idiot it's spelled Reggae not Raggae! "Boom Bye Bye" was written when he was fifteen and because of a man/boy rape case in Jamaica..get it straight Idiot

    37. 37

didn't buju banton have a song about aids awareness? sounds really insensitive to the gay population to me!

    38. 38

'boom bye bye in batty bwoy head rude man nah promote no nasty man dem haffy dead.'

    39. 39

Honestly, to anyone that says "this song was about man/boy rape", whatever whatever. Nothing, absolutely nothing justifies the language in this song, it's inciteful, it's ignorant and to the millions of people that listen to this man's music, dangerous. Anything else is short sighted. And this song is FAR from forgotten "boom bye bye like buju i'm crucial, i'm a brooklyn boy i make take some gettin used to" oh yeah, totally forgotten, that's why jay z referenced it um, this year.

Ignorance is dangerous, folks. It breeds hate violence and, oh all of the world's problems. But I guess it's no big deal. Send this idiot to jail and keep him there.

      To quote Eureka POZ blog:

      Buju Banton Eureka Show Canceled!

The previously scheduled October 11 Buju Banton show at Nocturnum in Eureka has been canceled.

Here is a copy of the letter sent to Queer Humboldt from Carol Bruno of People Productions:

This email is to confirm to you that after lengthy consideration, Gil and myself decided that we will cancel the upcoming Buju Banton concert at the Nocturnum Nightclub scheduled for the October 11th, 2009.

We have been diligently speaking with the management and various activists over the past two weeks in an effort to help establish a dialogue for discussions. We care about our local gay community.

Buju did issue a statement today that we have forwarded to you today, but it doesn’t change our decision.

We will continue towards positive, constructive solutions.

We regret any inconveniences this has caused to our community.

    41. 41

Re: doingthisjustonce – You are a pig and total scum what you forget to mention is that this dirty ape still plays this song that talks about burning and shooting gay people in his current concerts. I just read the lyrics to "boom bye bye", what a fucktard!

    49. 49

Please stop forcing ur homosexuality on our society….. and if u know anything about Jamaican culture PEREZ, u would know cocaine is not something we mess with when we have GANJA…. We do not agree with a homosexual lifestyle and some people choose to view their point verbally, so f*ck off. Boom bye bye

    56. 56

What? Malicious my ass…..The fucking music is not literal asswipe, u people just blow things out of proportion look at what u r doing to Tiger Woods like he is the first to F someone outside of a marriage. Don't try to justify u being a RACIST towards Jamaicans. Do not generalize all of us. If u know anything you know that buggering is a crime in my country. And Buju's song is a reaction to a man raping and killing a little boy back in the 90s….so u try and justify that….IDIOT! I shouldn't have to be forced to accept ur sexual preference, I am not forcing mine on u am I?

    57. 57

COKE!? WTF. coke is a drug
      weed is a religious sacrament.
      this dude is a poser.

      GOD
      =
      ONE LOVE

      there should be
      love
      peace
      and
      acceptance
      for everyone
      every creed
      color
      belief
      sex
      sexual orientation
      etcetera

      Respect a fellow's belief
(sadly we should respect his beliefs, even as hateful as they are–because everyone is entitled to their freedom of thought)

But to propogate hate is totally different.

If you hate, keep it to yourself.
If you love, spread the word.

    58. 58

have fun bein a bitch in prison , bitch

    59. 59

I support same sex marriages in America. Why? Because I am an American citizen. Reggae Artists are not American citizens. Which means if homosexuality is not accepted in Jamaica, then we should respect their rights to condone it. The US needs to stop trying to enforce their Western views on countries who are not willing to embrace it! I love Buju. Always will. I fell in love with him after 'Love Me Browning.' Suck it up Perez!

    60. 60

Boom Bye bye was ONLY one song. His songs are actually more romantic, political and spiritual. I know this. I have been a fan of his for a little more than a decade. {examples, UNTOLD STORIES, LAID TO REST, LOVE SPONGE, GOOD LOOKIN GAL, GOD OF MY SALVATION, WHO SAY, and etc}. Many people would actually be suprised.

    61. 61

U gays think the world revolve around u, it doesnt. D man is bein provoked for a soung that as bin written and sung since e was 15. Wat u shud all realize is dat majority of d crime against gays in jamaica and anywhere else is cause by the gays demselves as a result of domestric diputes. they ave no self control and a very jealous streak. when their partner cheats on dem itsa like they get crazy and do d most vicious crime. ave u ever heard a straight female cuttin off her mans dick, or gouging out their eyes all bcuz e went out NOOOOOOOOOOOOo. It amazes me the level of hatred that is spewing on this blog - especially from the so called defenders of "rights" - "I hope he gets raped in the ass" WOW! It also amazes me to see the ignorance being spewed about Jamaica by people who have obviously never been there. Let me clear something up - There has never been any widespread killing and "burning" of people in Jamaica simply because they are gay FACT. "Fire Bun" is a terminology used for anything we don't agree with - NOT LITERALLY BURNING WITH FIRE (ie Lets buy a pizza for dinner…nah, FIRE BUN for them babylon food…" continued….

Jamaica is no more homophobic than the US is heterophobic. This arrest has nothing to do with Buju being anti-gay (or does it? - I see conspiracy from the other end) so why even mention it? There are over 1300 murders every year in Jamaica (pop. 2.8 million) and although it shouldn't be an issue (murder is murder) the gay community tries to make a case about the violent nature of Jamaicans to gays in Jamaica. Truth be told, the majority of murders that are committed against gays in Jamaica are usually committed by a lover or former lover. Contrary to popular belief and that Biblical…er Time magazine article that keeps being quoted Jamaica is not a Homophobic society - we have no fear of gays, actually we leave gay people alone and stay far away. What about the 1300 murders every year in Jamaica? If you are so into righteousness, please speak out about the social ills that contribute to this (the same social ills that cause rich older men to take advantage of innocent children in the ghetto destroying their lives BOOM BYE BYE AND FIRE BUN FOR THAT), because the REAL REASON gay people (just like straight people) are victims of murder in Jamaica HAS more to do with these social ills than with people running around killing people because of their sexual orientation. You want to help? Stop focussing on Buju, and Bennie and get to the root of the matter…

It is also quite interesting that an artist who in 20+ years of recording has probably never sold more than 3million units ( collectively) is at the center of this "gay rights" issues - THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE SOMETHING NEGATIVE TO SAY ABOUT BUJU WOULD NEVER EVEN HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THE SONG HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE "GAY ORGANISATIONS" - Buju is way more popular now than he has ever been in his career because of y'all.

Gay organisations picked an artist that they thought would be an easy pushover - I don't hear anyone of them shouting out against Marshall Mathers - a WHITE AMERICAN artists who is way more influential than Buju will ever hope to be. FIRE BUN for america and their racist shitstem (for the ignorant and illiterate, that did not mean to literally throw acid on America)

FACT - Jamaica had a gay prime minister for 12+ years, America has yet to even have a gay candidate…which is the HOMOPHOBIC society?
