Kenny Ortega Goes To New Heights

| Filed under: Broadway BabiesFilm Flickers

Let's hope he sticks with this longer than he did with Footloose! (We're still a little miffed about that!)

Kenny Ortega, the genius man behind High School Musical and Michael Jackson's This Is It, has been pegged to helm the film adaptation of the Tony Award winning musical, In The Heights.

Backed by Universal, Kenny will join original writer, composer and star of the hit musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda, as he reprises his role and adds producer to his credits.

It's very hard to capture the magic of theatre on-screen, but maybe this will have a fighting chance.

Will U go see this?

I'm sure Kevin and Lin Manuel will pull it off. I think it's a great opportunity for people who can't afford a Broadway ticket, to enjoy such a great musical. I've been dying to see the play, but my budget can't afford it…..however, I can afford $10 - $12 to see the movie…… AWESOME…

i think it's about time we shot kenny ortega out into space so he can't inflict any more of his retarded bullshit on all of us.

I will def see this! Its a great show. But many times the movie pales in comparison to the show. I'm looking forward to it though, maybe it'll suprise me!

Congrats to Kenny for the Critics Choice Award nomination for best documentary for This is It (could Oscar be next).
The idea of Footloose the musical even having been considered for the screen made me throw up a little in my mouth.
In the Heights is a great choice from an art standpoint which is why its success would be a coin flip depending on many variables.

    Oh heck yeah!

Re: phillovin2 – Speaking of "pales in comparison," the commercials for "Heights" features only white Hispanics, while most Dominicans I've seen are darker, either mixed or Black.
Kinda like the adaptations of "West Side Story" all over again, where only straight-haired and light-skinned actors got cast.
    Couldn't help but notice.

saw the original cast and as long as they stay true to the stage version AND get most if not all of the original cast/current cast members to be in it i will be the first in line!

Good for Kenny. I wish him all great success. He is a great talent and Michael loved Kenny. He does everything with L-O-V-E lol

I dont' know about Kevin, but I'm THRILLED about Lin-Manuel!!! I'm soooo in line to see this!! The elevated train outside my window doesn't phase me anymooore….

Yes yes yes! I'm sooo happy Lin is reprising his role! It really is Usnavi when Lin plays him. I'm going to see Heights in Feb. on the tour. I don't get why they would need a choreographer when the choreography is perfect! Let's hope they dont mess it up! You can never compare a movie to the live show, since seeing it live is alwaysss better than the movie! I love Heights and I hope it's a decent movie for a FABULOUS musical!

I think this would be a great movie.. BUT only Lin Manuel should reprise his stage role, the rest of the cast was great BUT, this need big latino stars to make this a hit. Don't make it another "RENT". Get JLo on the phone!!!
