Sources tell us that Island Def Jam has stopped ALL promotion Mariah Carey's latest album, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel, including the new single H.A.T.E.U.
Instead, remix albums will be issued in February with one featuring pop and hip-hop remixes of all the songs on Memoirs including 4 brand new songs. The other album will be Electro-Pop remixes done by the Jump Smokers.
The first remix released will be a reworked version of the lovely Angels Cry, featuring Ne-Yo and is expected to hit radio around January 4th.
The remix albums sound pretty gimmicky to us, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do!
Good thing hubby Nick Cannon is bringing home the bacon!

The RIAA certifies by shipments, not by units sold. Since CELEBRATION is a double-disc, each disc in one album gets counted (strange policy, I know). So it is possible for a double disc to sell 250K and go Gold.

The 2 disc sale is recorded at time of purchase by Nielsen Sound Scan. So overall we could say that Celebration sold 125k individually and yes i am well aware Billboard is shipments. The only sales data in the USA is compiled by Nielsen Sound Scan. That has been the case since 1992 when they took over the process. Gold Certification means 500k have been sent to Retailers and does not take in to account return to supplier CD's. So if you want real figures you monitor Nielsen. Gold my arse!!! Mariah's sales can all be backed up by Nielsen as they have monitored all her CD releases. Madonna and all other artists on the other hand have no proper data before 1991 it all comes down to their record label and somehow i do not think they will publish anything negative.

Well, the RIAA and Soundscan are two different entities and really don't interact with each other that much. All it takes is for Warner to ship 250K of a double album for it to go Gold (250K X 2). It IS possible that CELEBRATION sold less than that. It could have even been overshipped for all we know, and a lot of copies are still sitting on shelves in stores. Personally I think RIAA certifications should be based on sales and not shipments. Like you, I also question Madonna's best selling status. Albums like EROTICA, BEDTIME STORIES, HARD CANDY, MADONNA, AMERICAN LIFE, I'M BREATHLESS & HARD CANDY had modest sales for someone of her caliber. Her follow up to her biggest album TRUE BLUE was LIKE A PRAYER, and the latter sold less than half of the former. That's quite a drop. The only album that she has that broke any sales records is the IMMACULATE COLLECTION, which is the best selling compilation album by a solo artist. She has released, however, a helluva lot more singles that have been successful internationally, more than any other female artist, so that may come into play into her sales figures, but as an album artist, she's really nothing special. But I don't really feel like getting into another Mariah vs. Madonna feud…been there done that, and I realize it really doesn't accomplish anything.
