Timbaland To Quit Hip Hop

We knew something was up when Timbaland was praising Miley Cyrus for her singing talents.

In a recent interview, Timbaland reveals that he's done with music. Rap music that is.

That also explains why on his third solo album, Shock Value II, he added more pop-sounding music with artists like Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, and Miley recording for the album. According to the former rapper:

"I was done with hip-hop a long time ago. Once my generation left, I left. I do it, but there's nobody from my generation besides Jay who's doing it. I look at Lil Wayne as being from my generation. Some people are still acceptable. Kanye is acceptable from my generation.

After my last album, I know where my bread and butter is at. I know 75 percent [of the people who buy my album] are women who love Timbaland and most are the women who watch 'Desperate Housewives' and all those others.

I did this research. It's the women who watch 'Sex and the City,' 'Desperate Housewives' — all the real go-to-the-bar women like Timbaland, and mostly European women.

It lets me know that my fanbase is mostly women and they are from all cultures. So it's not a person who loves mostly hip-hop. It's a person who loves everything besides hip-hop."

So, just to get this clear, the women that buy your albums are women who don't love hip-hop? We think you should get your money back on that "research."

And despite poor album says on his last album, Timbaland says he isn't letting that get him down.

Instead, he adds "If this album does as semi-well as the last one, I'm done. I'm not going through the stress no more. I will do it for my fans and give it away for free."

Giving away your next album for free might be the way to go if you don't start working on better songs.

      good.

    2. 2

Personally I think it's a smart move, rap…for the most part is just not exciting or fresh anymore.

I am a woman and I live in Europe and I love his tunes. Madonna, Nelly Furtado, One Republic, Miss Elliot….and Co. Every time I hear a song of his - I want to shake my goove thang. I really dont need any gangsta rap.

    6. 6

Uh, he helped resurrect Nelly Furtado, so what are you talking about?
The talented Nelly is Canadian of Portuguese extraction, but somehow, he sold her as hip-hop. "Promiscuous Girl" kept her in the public eye, and she was accepted as "urban." Kinda.
      Hey, stranger things have happened.

    7. 7

      Yep. He's right

Hey, illiterate moron, how about this?:
"And despite poor sales on his last album"
      -
The word is 'sales' (not 'says') and you don't need to say 'album' twice in the same sentence.

Tim is just trying to sell more albums and he is not even accepted as a rapper in the hip hop culture but a producer (a good one). Hip Hop is just hit hard by the recession but it will be back. Lets just hope another artist like Jay Z and Eminem rise up to the scene

I think Timbaland is right on target with this move. jus like "seanetic" said "rap is NOT exciting anymore" BUT Timbalands beats still are and always sound fresh. I much prefer vocals over his beats than the tired cliche' rap metaphore's anyday. Timbaland is a great artist and i hope he doesn't throw in the towel all together. He and "Danja" Hills are where the sound is at. Retro and Futuristic at the same time.

    11. 11

Good, he's annoying as hell anyway.

    12. 12

So he never loved hip hop….just doing it for the money. whatever.

    13. 13

FUCK NO! HES THE ONLT PRODUCER THAT CAN MAKE LOSER ARTISTS/SONGS SOUND GOOD!!!!

    14. 14

Poor sales on his last album? What are you smoking - Shock Value was a huge hit! Three *huge* top 10 hits — hello, "Apologize"? And that's what you should do for being so fucking stupid, Perez. Put the crack pipe down.

    15. 15

timbaland hasn't been "hip-hop" for quite some time. this is no surprise. what is surprising is that he thinks people want to buy a timbaland album when what he's most famous for is the work he does for other artists.

    16. 16

HE HAS THE BEST BEATS…NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT!

    17. 17

Good. I hate music that starts from "beats" anyway. Give me great lyrics and good melodies–start with one of the other. Add "beats" later. Geez….beats. Pfftt…..

    18. 18

This comment isn't really beneficial for his claim to be an artist, as he is following to that what public wants him to do.
But well, we knew it already when he came out with the Justin/Nelly Disease of FutureSex/LoveSounds and Loose

    19. 19

he began producing the likes of aaliyah and missy elliot. he has moved on do production for nelly furtado, justin timberlake and quite a few rock and pop stars. when he says he's done with hip hop i take it that he's no longer doing the producing thing.

    20. 20

Timbaland is the shit. If I were in music, I'd want him producing me.

    21. 21

First of all Timbaland didn't have poor album sales on the last album. Shock Value sold 1,125,327 copies in the U.S, 600,000 copies in UK, 210,000 copies in Australia, 100,000 copies in Canada and 200,000 copies in Germany. I listened the new album and it is incredibly good. I dont know if it would do very well in terms of sales but it doesnt diminish the quality of the product.

    22. 22

was he high during this interview? I mean, look at him…

    23. 23

This is the reason that this man makes money, because he is a business man. He knows that he won't sell NEARLY as many albms now that hip hop has deflated so badly and he is totally in tune with who buys his music. i'm 24 year old female and i love all of his stuff, as do all my 20something year old female friends. Guys rock it too, but mostly I see women.

      24

You want to tell me how his last album selling 1.2 million in the USA and 3 million worldwide equals poor album sales? Yet Britney's Circus sold 3.5 million worldwide and her sales are huge? You sound like an idiot Perezpuss.

    25. 25

      Good riddance?

    26. 26

      yawn

    27. 27

So basically what he's saying is, only alcoholic tramps buy his music? Cool.

    28. 28

Perez, dear, you seem confused again. Women like the pop that he produces, but his solo hip-hop stuff. He's got his demographic pretty well pegged.

    29. 29

      your writers are terrible
