Standard PR crisis management technique for trying to restore damaged images. They're trying to make Perez/Mario more human and give the public some things they can relate to while still controlling the message. They're hoping that people either feel sorry for him and forgive his behaviour or connect with him enough to overlook it. This tells me that Mario is very worried about how he is being viewed these days and is trying to save his business.
