Virgin Media is being ridiculed by the ginger-haired community for supposedly hating on them in their new ad for the show Dating in the Dark. The ad asks the question: "How do you spot a ginger in the dark?… Looks or personality, who wins?"
The jest had redheads seeing red and the Advertising Standards Authority was inundated with calls to have the advertisement removed. The ASA complied.
Jeez, sensitive much?
Virgin Media came back with a statement, insisting that the show "challenged people's perceptions of attractiveness."
And let's get real here: it's a reality dating show where desperate fools wander around in the dark, hoping to get lucky! Do you all really want to get nit-picky about the ethics of this?

The ginger jokes have gotten old. Does anyone actually find them funny anymore? To be honest I can't blame redheads for getting upset about these stupid comments, given the number of people who were beat up on "Kick a Ginger" days.

Actually it is a pretty big deal. A British friend of mine was explaining this to me the other day. There are apparently a lot of race issues in the UK against redheads, and it has escalated to violent levels in the last few years. Redheaded kids get beat up all the time, and a few years ago, someone got stabbed.
It's bad enough being a fire crotch so I understand why they're sensitive about being called names.

Firstly, as a Brit I can insist that this is just people complaining for the sake of complaining, LoritaJean you are grossly misinformed by your British friend, gingers are not teased any more so then any other group of people, bullying is a serious problem everywhere but Britain does not suffer from ginger-phobia. Secondly, this story makes me laugh as it coincidently is at the same time as one of our supermarket chains having to remove a Christmas card from their stores as it stated "Santa loves all kids…even the gingers" It is just a joke, be it poor taste… it is not a militant movement against a hair colour…
Im a ginger & have an awesome sense of humor..I dont mind the ginger jokes at all but this is clearly implying that redheads are ugly which is so mean! Just like everyone else said above, if it was "black" or "gay" there would be a huge uproar. No reason why making fun of 1 minority is okay and not others.
actually a friend of mine from england said it's a real problem with violence against redheads or gingers as they say. so bizarre to me but it's true and a problem for ginger kids getting picked on at school. I wonder if it's against the Irish. So actually Perez it is a big deal.

Re: Amagod121 – I'm British and I've never met an English person who dislikes the Irish. Gingerism comes from the fact that they are pale (we live in a tan obsessed culture) and not very common, which makes them easy targets.

i'm a redhead, and strangers say all the time, 'oh you're one of the hot ones — you guys are either super hot or super ugly' as if that's a compliment! it's like people constantly need new scapegoats to keep themselves entertained. not too long ago, it was blacks. then women. then gays. jews. now we're over the skin color thing and moving on to hair? i don't think it gets any lamer than that.

as a natural born green-eyed, redhaired woman, who also happens to be American, I take offense to this. People are constantly looking for ways to insult or poke fun at reds. I hear its considerably worse across the pond. I know most men happen to find redheaded women, such as myself, to be alluring and sexualized (of which I can't blame them, I live life with zest and adventure ). Its my understanding that redheaded men have the brunt of the insults flung their direction. As to which, I am sorry. Redhair is gorgeous, and rare. 2% of the population has natural redhair. Thats amazing. More people should be glorifying the reds, not looking for ways to make them feel inferior to others based on hair color. Seriously..

Actually, there is a lot of discrimination against "gingers" in the UK, and lots of violence against them too. I think taking this kind of ad off the air over there makes sense - no need to antagonize the bullies any more than they already are. It's sad that people are picked on for their looks, but I don't think that will ever change unfortunately. People can't seem to look past physical attractiveness. I like this show, I wish it was on again here - just not so late at night.

In case you haven't heard, for some reason, red-headed kids are getting beat up just for having RED HAIR! As a former redhead (I'm grey now), I find this very disturbing. I see no reason to censor advertisers, but I would hope they would be more sensitive to the current situation…

Hey news flash people … red headed kids get teased and picked on in the US. I remember far more teasing for being red head as a kid was not till I was a teenager that I realized alot of men thik it is a good thing. But until I was 14 I wanted to dye it black. I was in england at 16 and NEVER had a "ginger" issue. Unfortunatly with the ginger jean you seem to end up either very pretty or very ugly and the ginger boys 98% of the time are not very attractive either making them easy targets for school yard misery as well.

Well if you look at it from just this one incident, then of course it's blown out of proportion, but if you consider that gingers get total shit in England for just being a damn ginger, and some even get bullied, or physically abused, then it's kind of insensitive of YOU to judge. damn. if id seen this i wouldnt have signed up with virgin media - iv JUST comitted to a contract with them (which is how im online now) there have been rather a lot of attacks on red heads (including myself) over the last couple years. The one story that haunts me is the family that were chased from home to home, attacked and threatened because they had red hair. its far more serious than you would think.
