They just can't catch a break!

General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt has said that NBC will lose an estimated $200 million on the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games in February and that they are "counting on having touch economics around the Olympics."

Advertisers must not be confident in the Winter Games this year.

Okay, what the frick is "touch economics"? I went to business school and I've never heard of such a thing. If you're going to purloin your content, Perez, would you be a lamb and at least copy the material correctly? He said TOUGH economics you illiterate chimp.

Maybe they are lowering expectations so ultimately they can declare some sort of success. The Torino Winter Games were down 37% overall and 45% with younger viewers when compared with the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. I think the numbers will probably fall somewhere in between the ratings for 02 and 06, as they are returning to North America.
I like the Winter Olympics as the odd nature of the sports is of interest to me. Also although it is a forgone conclusion the USA will win the most medals in the Summer Olympics that is not the case for the Winter Olympics, though we get closer each year (to Germany). The Winter Olympics also have only seven basic sports (within which are disciplines and events) compared with 26 for the Summer Olympics.

Winter! But I'm Canadian… so of course I love the Olympic hockey.

Can't the Verizon Fios Desk (aka product placement) help fill in the gap?

For 30 years, the highlight of the Summer Olympics was watching the male swimming teams come out and take off their sweats, then get up on the start blocks, their perfect bodies with beautiful swimmers muscles…yummy. It's a shame they have changed from the very brief swim trunks to the body suit.

      Summer…all male swimming teams…perfect bodies…yummy!
I miss the very bried swim suits they used to wear.

Winter. Vancouver's bent over backwards in their preparations, but in this unfortunate economy it will be a spiritual victory for togetherness and excellence in sport; which isn't a bad thing. Go, Vancouver, and good on ya.

    17. 17

      hockey baby!

    18. 18

definitely summer…when someone says "olympics" i just think of summer events…winter just seems like a nice filler in between the four year gaps

    19. 19

      winter olympics ftw.

      hockey=

Diffinitely the winter which usually do better in the ratings then the summer so I don't know what they think they will lose.

    24. 24

WINTER! Snug in front of the tube with something warm in my hands…….

    25. 25

Who cares about NBC? The 2010 games have basically ruined Vancouver's economy, too bad I live there.

    26. 26

      that's because they're BORING

      I mean … Luge? WTF?

    27. 27

Wow! How about that. GE owned NBC is set to lose millions on the Olympics and I'm sure millions more to follow. It might even get so bad that they would have to be bailed out by our government. I mean, they are too big to fail as far as networks go, right? Hmmm then wouldn't they kinda be owned by the government? And I know none of us posting our opinions on this gossip web page would want the media to be owned and operated by the them…liiiiike let's say some big newspapers they're about to "save."

    28. 28

they are "counting on having touch economics around the Olympics."

      WTF IS TOUCH TIME????
IS THAT WHAT YOU AND TEDDY DO LATE AT NIGHT?

    29. 29

Winter, but I'm Canadian, and we're in more events in the winter.

summer olympics are more interesting for me. but i love the winter ones too. can't wait to watch them!

    33. 33

      personally, i hate winter weather…so no, i wouldn't watch.
      but i haven't watched the summer games since i was a kid…
