Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal were reportedly fighting a lot over the past few months ultimately ending their relationship on the phone.
Jake was ready to get married, but Reese wasn't confident in his step-parenting abilities for her two young children Ava and Deacon with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. A source explains:
"She really worried that they didn't have enough in common. When she was giving all of her energy to Jake, she felt like she wasn't giving her kids enough. He was great with the kids, but she felt like he didn't get the whole scope of what that entailed."
Apparently there was "no drama" in their break-up with no infidelity of any kind, just a general parting of ways.

Perez, it doesn't sound like she questioned his ability as a step-parent. Quit twisting stuff! He was in magazines taking flowers to Ava's concert so Deacon could present them, there's pictures of Deacon climbing all over him,(Ryan must be pissed!) and I think there is no way miss Type A Personality Reese would let Jake be around those kids and spend so much time with them at the farm or ranch or WTFever, she even said he built stuff at the farm!…and they did live together for at least a year. So Reese is living with him, vacationing with him, renting houses all over the place with him on location, and all this stuff she did WITH the kids right there. JAke even went out with Deacon alone! So Reese is saying Jake wasn't good enough? She had her doubts? I call bullshit. I think Reese probably had to be both mother and father to those kids when Ryan was off cheating, and I think once she was divorced she got allll wrapped up in the kids, hyper-obssessed. Not a balance. She is just like a lot of single, working mothers who feel guilty every time they do something for themselves. I also think that she couldn't boss Jake around. I think she misused Jake. He was too good to her.

This is why people with kids should ONLY date other people with kids. Otherwise, the childless one in the relationship tends to become 'low man/woman on the totem pole and often has to work their rears off to please the kids, their significant other, the ex spouse, etc. and still gets the shaft. So if you have kids and are dating someone who doesn't have children, PLEASE realize your little angels aren't always easy to love. And appreciate your dating partner, who is probably trying much harder than you think. Jake seemed like a better parent to those kids than their birth father. But he probably made the kids behave. And that never goes over well. You can date a parent, but you aren't allowed to give any feedback on how to raise their kids. It's a no win situation.

You're supposed to be marrying a husband, not a father. The kids already have a father. Jake not being "father material" is a pretty poor excuse. If the guy makes you happy, that's all that counts. Women put their kids first and end up losing out. Then the kids leave in 10 years, and you're left with squat.

I think that if this is true, it's a very good reason for a break-up. It's so nice to see a proper mother for once, who puts her children first. No matter what, that's how it's meant to be. Especially when her kids are still young. Although I am sad things didn't work out for them. They seemed really happy together. Maybe it's something they can work on…

Well I am not sure she takes care of them so well either. I have never seen a picture of them smiling or laughing when they are with her. They are always morose and glum.
