Just how we like our billboards: inventive and offensive! Pure genius!
This Christmas, folks in New Zealand were prompted to ponder their religion a little farther outside the Bible than they were used to. A billboard, erected by the church itself, finds Joseph lying in bed with his wife Mary, with the heading "God is a hard act to follow" looming above him.
Hilarious and thought provoking! We love it!
As expected, many members of the parish were not so open-minded about the message, claiming it was "sacrilege" and inappropriate. It only took four hours for someone to come along and deface the the billboard in a fury.
The church vicar, Archdeacon Glynn Cardy, stands by his decision to have the billboard created, as he described his church as having very liberal ideas about Christianity.
We think we'd love to hear a sermon from this guy! Seems to us like he's got some good ideas!
And for the haters, let's get real. You don't think Joseph ever got busy with Mary? She was his wife after all and he was a MAN! Just because the Bible leaves that tidbit out doesn't mean it didn't happen!

The fact that people, in this day and age, actually believe that an angel, traveled from the skies above and landed on Earth, tapped the little VIRGIN girl Mary on the shoulder, said to her "You will give birth to the son of god" and flew back home to the sky is astounding. This stuff was written in a bible when people didn't know any better so they all believed it. Why they STILL do today, is absolutely mind-boggling.
I don't think people are offended that Joseph and Mary had marital relations. I think they're offended because the billboard is implying that Mary had relations with God. Which IS offensive.

As a Christian, I fully believe that Joseph and Mary completely consummated their marriage. God intended for all marriages to include sex, including the one between Mary and Joseph. Just because TPTB didn't include it in the Bible doesn't mean it didn't happen. Too many of them didn't want Mary's virginhood besmirched by the THOUGHT of her being a real WIFE to her husband. …'immaculate conception' does not refer to the conception of Jesus. It actually is a little farther out than that - it means that Mary herself was conceived without original sin and that this is what allowed her to carry the Christ. It is a Catholic thing and NOT a Biblical thing.
'Immaculate conception' is oft-misused. I did not know what it meant either initially.

Ummm, the problem isn't that the billboard suggests Joseph and Mary had sex, they obviously did because they were married and had other children, the problem is the suggestion that Mary and God had some sort of phsyical sexual thing which is creepy and wrong.

There wasn't a physical sex act but an impregnation through the will of God. But the fact there was no physical sex isn't what is significant. Christ was concieved without passing on the sinful seed of man, therefore he is a person without inherited sin and divine. That is the significance at heart. Mary was a virgin engaged to Joseph. She subsequently married him and bore at least one other child concieved through sexual intercourse with Joseph. Mary is not divine. She was a regular, earthly woman God chose as fitting to carry the Son of Man. Catholics, however, tend to erroneously elevate her to a divine level.
Wonder if would be funny if was directed at MUSLIMS OR GAYS - no it would be considered hate speech.

But in case you're talking about verses which mention 'jesus's brothers or sisters' the term 'brother' in the bible is not restricted to the literal meaning of a full brother or half-brother. it can mean cousins or any male relative. In hebrew and Aramaic there is no word invented for cousins so the mention of 'brother' is also talking about cousins. Just FYI

Points to clarify: Jesus wasn't just a man - He was both God and human. Virgin Mary was before and after the birth a virgin. Joseph was a widow with children when he was engaged to Mary. Jesus' "siblings" were all older than him.

Mary's cousin Elizabeth knew who the baby in her womb was when she touched her belly. The baby jumped in her womb. Elizabeth was the mother of John The Baptist. Read it.
