Holy Shiz! Weightlifter Gives Birth Without Knowing She Was Preggo!

We don't really understand how some women aren't aware they're pregnant, but it happens and in this case it happened to Chilean Olympic weightlifter Elizabeth Poblete.
During a training session, Poblete gave birth to a baby boy who was 3 months premature. He and his mother have both been taken to the hospital and the baby is in intensive care.
Poblete reports that she was not feeling well during the training sesh and shortly after out popped her son at 2.54 pounds and 14 inches long.
Poblete is currently out of the hospital, telling the media she could no longer afford care.
Crazy!
But we hope the baby is doing well!

It's not horribly uncommon. Some people just don't know. She may not have been having her period, so that may not have been a warning sign… and not everyone gains weight…

Shut your stupid fat trap Perez! I'm in high school and my friend gave birth to a baby girl just last Saturday, and she only found out she was pregnant three weeks before the baby was due!!!!!!!!!!! She had been coming to parties and everything right up until she was told, and she had no bump. The reason? She was tall, so the baby had enough room to lay vertically without showing. Also, she kept having periods throughout the pregnancy. So yes, you stupid douche bag, women can be pregnant and not know.

Female athletes often stop having periods due to frequent exercise. Olympic weightlifters are not the most slender of athletes. This baby was three months early, people, and only weighed 2.5 pounds. Give the poor woman a break. I hope the baby survives and they are a happy family.

This is not uncommon with female atheletes Perez. Because of the low body fat there is less estrogen means irregular or no periods. Also, as a weight lifter she probably was doing the high protein thing and adding some muscle mass and since the baby was premature she probably did not gain alot of weight. So don'tbe too hard on her.

in france we heard several stories about "pregnancy denials" as they're called. apparently, a woman can honnestly not notice the fact that she's pregnant, and moreover if she's a performer or an athlete. i that case, it's frequent not to have your periods for example. Other strange medical fact: if you're in denial of that pregnancy, the foetus places itself in a specific way so you don't devellop the usuall round belly, and even close friends or yourself can be unaware of it. Amazing how the psyche acts on the body…
I guess I don't know much about Chile's health care system, but is her baby going to be okay? Hearing that she "could no longer afford care" is pretty scary, especially for a premature baby. Is there more to this story beyond this?

Re: perez_love21 – I've had three kids, and with my first two, I only felt them kick near the end of my pg. I had an anterior placenta, which means it was cushioning the baby kicks and I couldn't feel them. Not everyone gets the "shit kicked out of them".

yes the woman is chilean but she was in Brazil at the time of the birth, unfortunatly the baby died yesterday. the chilean goverment was trying to get her and the baby back where the belong, but it was to risky to move the baby at the time, all i know.

Re: fickdich – 'that' feeling of taking a dump is because of the pressure on the colon and bladder. some women keep thinking they have to urinate. that is why some births take place in the bathroom. most labors take time with the pushing and women have no doubt where the baby is coming out of. BUT, some babies travel right through the birth canal (vagina), thought rare. If you are in denial about pregnancy, if the baby is lying toward the back, your hormones are in high gear,and just because, say you have a sudden shift of 25 lbs downward, can make you feel like you have to take a dump.
I know that athletes can sometimes go months without getting their period when they work out a lot, but it still boggles the mind that someone takes SUCH poor care of herself that she wouldn't know she was pregnant.

So, the baby just died, actually, she gave birth last thursday and he couldn't make it through the week… She was in the hospital for a couple of days, but was ok so she was sent home and the baby stayed.
Women athletes usually don't get their periods because of their hard training schedule, so, even if it strange, it's possible she didn't know she was pregnant. And she wasn't training at the time, she was getting ready for it…

It's not like she had been in Brazil for a while, she had just gotten here because she was going to train here, the day she gave birth was when she was supposed to start her training schedule here… It was definitely weird because she'd been training in Chile, so between weightlifting training and travelling around, that may have played some part on her giving birth so early.

Suprisingly this happens ALL THE TIME. There was a show on this on TLC or Discovery Health not sure. There's even a woman apparing on the Tyra show today with this same issue. Weird. They still have their period by the way.

Re: kendra525 – I am 45 years old, and I gave birth in April to a baby girl. I found out on Christmas day in 2008 that I was pregnant. I didn't gain any weight or have any symptoms. I always skipped my monthly most of my life, and I wasn't on birth control for over 7 years. This was a total surprise for me! My friends are grandmothers. I have a 9 year old and a 7 year old daughter too. I had a menopausal surprise.

its a psychological anomaly. Woman block it from their minds and deny it so much that they body reacts like there is no pregnancy and the baby's growth keeps happening. Everyone will be surprised at the amount of women who do not know that they are pregnant and have the child nine months later.

This is an actual (albeit rare) condition. There was TLC special about it–how women don't gain that much weight, nothing much changes, etc. and then BOOM.

Ok: First off, as some people have previously stated, women can be pregnant without noticing it, specially athletes and even more so a weightlifter, who obviously isnt shaped the way most women are. At 6 months pregnant, some women don't show, specially big women and if she was missing her period, thats actually normal for any athlete
Second off, i know this story because i am actually chilean and this was in the news last week: even though she is chilean, she was training in Brazil, she started labor while she was in the training facilities and then she was taken to a nearby hospital, which happened to be a private, really expensive one. Given that she is chilean and not a brazilian citizen, part of the treatment she received was beyond what her travel insurance could cover (because it was a private hospital) and the baby had to stay there because since he was premature he couldnt be moved to a different hospital, therefore, the baby was still in the ICU and even if they move him when he is in stable condition to a different hospital, the private hospital's bills have to be paid anyways.
Right now, the chilean government is trying to take care of the whole thing
