GaGa Explains Her Dance In The Dark
As with most of her songs, many speculate what Lady GaGa's lyrics really mean.
In a recent interview, the Fame Monster revealed the meaning behind Dance In The Dark.
Gagaloo explains:
"The record is about a girl who likes to have sex with the lights off, because she's embarrassed about her body. She doesn't want her man to see her naked. She will be free, and she will let her inner animal out, but only when the lights are out.
The Lady refers to the specific "Around her kiss is a vampire grin/ Moonlights away while she is howling at him", which mean:
"She doesn't feel free without the moon. These lyrics are a way for me to talk about how I believe women and some men feel innately insecure about themselves all the time. It's not sometimes, it's not in adolescence, it's always. [T]he song isn't called 'Dance in the Light. I'm not a gospel singer trying to cross people over. What I'm saying is, 'I get it. I feel you, I feel the same way, and it's OK.' "

A LOT of musicians/artists/actors/etc. get classical training, they do what they think is considered "good"…and yet they are bored by what is traditionally considered "good". So they then go their own route, and find true artistic happiness. Sometimes that also comes with commercial success, but not always. Gaga clearly chose the route less taken.
Everyone needs to remember that it is not a "given" that people would consider smearing blood on yourself at the VMAs to be cool (or her freak out on AI, or her videos, etc.). But she took a chance, as she always does, and people responded favorably. She could have very easily gone the boring, predictable way of other pop stars. She is fearless, and that is what makes her fun to watch. Love her performances!

How is this song about having sex with the lights off? The only line that I could see alluding to that is "Baby loves to dance in the dark". And even then it's a stretch!
I thought this song was about the decay of the celebrity in this day and age, with all these young female celebrities going to rehab, getting DUIs, and just generally being messes. "She looks good", but underneath she's a complete mess, so she "loves to dance in the dark" so no one can see her pain. With references to werewolves and vampires, I also thought GaGa was compairing these young celebrities to demons or monsters. The line "Marilyn, Judy, Sylvia, tellem' how you feel girls" (Marilyn, Judy, and Sylvia I assumed meant Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, and Sylvia Sidney) made me think GaGa was saying these young celebrities will never be the legends these girls were and that Hollywood's golden age is over.

Your interpretation of the song could just be as valid. People look at things differently. This is just a snippet of an interview, and I'm sure she'll explain the lyrics differently over & over in time.

i've never left any negative comments about ms gaga, but as i die hard bjork fan, i have noticed some similarities. before i even read the title of gaga's new record, i thought, "geez, that ensemble is incredibly bjork-y". i was actually really excited because i thought it was beautiful bjork for a split second. then, i noticed the album name! um…bjork did a fantastic movie with almost the same name…"dancer in the dark". with the outfit and the title, i think gaga is copy catting just a wee bit too much.
