They were celebrating Celia's birthday in Paris when he decided to pop the question.

First off, Susan doesn't suck her thumb. Someone asked her a question and she said she was taking baby steps and was fooling around sucking her thumb as a joke.
I just got done watching the TV special and feeling so good until I saw this. How sad this makes me feel. I wish he's waited until after Christmas for Susan's sake and for the sake of her fans who like thinking he was actually going to take her on the date he promised her. I think Susan has many ADMIRADORES and I don't believe Piers engagement will stop her from enjoying her career they are vey close friends and although Susan has always liked Piers Iam sure she understands he had a girlfriend. On the other hand I think Piers proposed to his girlfriend at this time because he may be falling for Susan somewhat. Remember guys there is something about susan besides her huge talent, she is a good woman, sweet, fun etc. and because of this Piers decided on the engagement. No offense to Piers girlfriend she is a beautiful girl but Susan also has a lot to offer.

i actually dont think this is anything to do with money. afterall she comes from a very well off background - shes the daughter of an MP, cambridge educated and a published author as well as journalist. She outclasses him in money and social status - what he has is fame and an ability to placate her daddy complex.
