In an effort to get some attention, save their careers, up their sales, Rage Against the Machine threw down the gauntlet to Simon Cowell and his X-factor protege, Joe, urging fans to ignore the "monotony" single put out by the reality star in favor of their new X-Mas song.
How desperate!
Simon has gotten wind of this little crusade and he isn't happy! He was quoted saying to the press:
"All these musical snobs have ganged up against Joe. If you take me out of the equation, you have a teenager with his first single being attacked by a huge hate mob on Facebook. It almost feels like a little kid being bullied. It feels like a spiteful campaign aimed at an 18-year-old who won a talent competition. It's David versus Goliath and it's not fair on Joe. It's getting out of hand."

Killing in the Name is not Rage's new Xmas song, it's a classic, and Rage does not need to "save their careers"; they are legends. I think they make a good point about all of the crap Idol and X Factor music getting all of the sales these days. Nobody will remember this kid next year - Rage is still remembered and loved after almost 20 years.

Okay this entire article is complete bollocks, you're missing the point of this campaign and some pretty straight forward information.
The campaign was NOT created by rage against the machine, but actually by a british person called Tracy. People are backing the campaign for various reasons, one of them being that every year for the past 4 years here in the UK the Xfactor winner has a christmas number 1, people pre-order the song before even knowing who wins and what song it is. Before, the christmas number 1 used to be fair, all the major artists would release a song for a fair battle to the number one spot, it was fun, now it's predictable, although i'm a fan of xfactor, it personally pisses me off.
On the good side, the 'desperate' bands earnings of these recent record sales are going towards the UK homeless charity 'shelter' & another british charity called youth music, already through this campaign they've raised £52,285.34 for shelter

So to you, over the pond with your opinions, it may seem like a desperate way to get some attention, but it's a good campaign whatever reason people decide to partake in it (and there are hundreds of thousands of people taking part) If they did get to christmas number 1, it would make a nice change from having an over disneyfied version of 'the climb' in the number one spot

It looks like quite the backlash against manufactured pop stars. Real bands struggle, work and become what they are organically. They shine and rise to fame based on their music which creates the public demand; not on who the record companies and T.V. TELL you is the next star. I remember being appalled at far east manufacturing of pop stars, and then to my horror watching the money machine start to crank them out here, and most all fizzle fast. Very few build a body of work over decades. This isn't against Joe at all. It's about something else, and Simon should know that. It's about the real deal.

Very poorly researched article Perez. The origin of this has nothing to do with Rage Against The Machine, as said below it was a grassroots movement by two music fans in the UK.
It also has nothing to do with bullying Joe; Joe is an excellent singer that much is obvious, it's about bringing some spontaneity back to the charts. Plus a little competition never hurt anyone. The Christmas number one spot has automatically gone to the X Factor winner for the past number of years, to survive in this industry the winner must prove they can genuinely beat out other contenders to achieve the top spot.
And just to clarify….. Rage do not need 'save their careers' or 'get some attention', their legacy is well intact. They still remain to be one of the most famous rock bands of the past decade and are still greatly adored by music fans across the world. It also should be recognised that Rage plan on giving all the money this single makes to charity!

X-Factor is just a very expensive marketing campaign for one person that is pushed in people's faces every weekend for half a year. The rest of the music industry doesn't get that luxury, so when 1 song gets a tiny fraction of that publicity, people like you, Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole want to go and cry because somebody's actually challenging for a number 1 spot and it's not an easy one-horse race anymore.
