"Work Sets You Free" Sign Stolen From Former Auschwitz Death Camp!
This is terrible!
The sign above the entrance to the former Auschwitz death camp in Poland reading "Arbeit Macht Frei [Work Sets You Free]" was stolen on Friday!
The 16-ft sign, displaying a cynical Nazi slogan, sat atop the entrance of the Auschwitz death camp while over 1 million people were killed from behind its gates during the Holocaust.
"The theft of such a symbolic object is an attack on the memory of the Holocaust, and an escalation from those elements that would like to return us to darker days," said Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev, directorate of the The Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority.
"I call on all enlightened forces in the world who fight against anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia and the hatred of the other, to join together to combat these trends," Shalev concluded in his statement from Jerusalem.
Although many fear the sign was stolen by "pranksters," British author and historian Andrew Roberts believes the sign may have been taken by collectors of Nazi paraphernalia.
"This is the biggest thing to happen in that sinister black market in a long time," said Roberts. "I fear that this being the ultimate image of the Holocaust that it's been stolen to order by a collector of Nazi paraphernalia."
Polish authorities are offering a $34,000 reward to anyone who can offer information on the disappearance of the sign.
We hope the conscience of whoever stole the sign gets the best of them and they return it ASAP!

Agree that the Holocaust was a deep, deep sickness that infected a culture and should not be forgotten (unlike the daily slaughters in Darfur— sarcasm).
However, your premise is flawed- if Hitler hated all non-Ayrans, then why did he form an alliance with the Japanese? Why did he try to cultivate allegiances with certain Arabs? If he despised the "Other" then why were his Brownshirts a bunch of militant homosexuals?

My hubby's family is (Christian) Palestinian and I heard their story, why they came to the States. About how jews raided their village, killing people and taking everything they owned, just because. They are decent people who had to watch their friends and neighbors getting slaughtered and robbed and the entire family had to seek refuge in Jordan. Up to this day, they still own land over there that the jews just won't return. That is the truth, buddy, and I don't need a fucking biased history book, I have first hand evidence. Re: Yankees4evah – You asked, so I'll tell you. Not unlike today, he picked & chose alliances with those who hated his enemies. The Japanese & Italians didn't get into the act until much later in the war. The war didn't begin until hitler had really gotten his domination "ball rolling". Basically, hitler hated anyone that didn't fit into his "plan", & that included other aryans, at times. He didn't have much confidence in his allies at times, either.

My inlaws were children in Germany during WWII. -Parents absorbed into the Nazi 'system', the eldest daughter 'became' a 'hitler-youth'. Parents disappeared (killed in the war), leaving the youngest kids to fend for themselves on the streets. They tell stories of being shot at by Nazi soldiers, even though their family were working (not willingly) for the Nazi gvmt (& blonde/blue eyed BTW). If you were poor, handicapped, & yes, homosexual (and hitler knew about it), he'd have you off-ed. Strangely, he actually had an "affection-like interest" in Native Americans, but thought they were "fatally flawed".

I could go on… any more questions? Genocide shouldn't be made light of. It happened in Cambodia, in Rwanda, in N. Iraq, Darfur (as you pointed out), ETC. It 'keeps happening' to our species. Any reminders need to remain, so that we can evolve out of this. Even insects know better.
Re: Ze German – #99 - Yes we ARE bombarded with the holocaust of the Native Americans AND with slavery! Although my ancestors had no part in it, it's something as an American we HAVE TO bear. Get over it, and get working on it. By being repulsed by the politics, we're allowing it to happen to somebody else. Germany had problems (WWI) before hitler. Imagine what we could do with our species if war didn't get in the way.
