Avatar Has A Disappointing Opening Weekend!

There's $500 million dollars shot to hell!

The most expensive movie ever made has FAILED at the box office.

To be fair, for any other flick, it would have been a rather impressive opening. But considering the $$$ and time put into this thing, we expected a lot more.

James Cameron's Avatar raked in a mere $73 million dollars in it's opening weekend here in the states. (It did a little better worldwide- $232.2 million.)

To put that into perspective for you - New Moon earned $72.7 million dollars in it's FIRST DAY of release, pulling in $125 million domestically over it's opening weekend.

Then again, it didn't have a blizzard on the East Coast to compete with. (Although, we gather there isn't much that would keep a Twi-hard from seeing their fave vamp and werewolf!)

Here's hoping they'll bring in some much needed funds throughout the week!

Did any of U see the flick?

Funny how nobody else on any other site has called Avatar's take disappointing. Movie sites and news sites have called it a successful box office weekend. You're just a gossip site desperate for attention. Sad.

    2. 2

Yep. Nasty snowstorms are partly to blame

    3. 3

I thought it was awesome! I love Sam Worthington. If you haven't seen Somersault with him and Abby Cornish, you should

First of all ass-hat, the film costs $323 Million to make and they had a $100+ million promotion budget.

Second, it is ballyhooed has one of the most amazing films of all time based on its fusion of CGI and humans

Third, experts say that there is no doubt that after having a $230M opening weekend that it is going to make 100% of its money back (50% of a films revenue is in DVD rentals and sales…BUT YOU KNEW THAT!).

Fourth, a bomb means the movie will lose money. Avatar is going to make $500M on DVD sales ALONE.

You are a moron, your interns are morons, your sister who actually is in charge of this site is a moron.

See what happens when you try to write something original? Epic fail.

    5. 5

what a moron this perez is. It hasn't failed its the highest grossing movie for james cameron in its opening weekend. Titanic didn't do that well its first week either and its the highest grossing movie of all time. This movie won't tank and it can't because word of mouth will make this movie leeak profit like crazy. Stick to shit you know perez.

$73 million is not a failure. *pounds head on desk*
It will have a long life in the theaters and earn back its production cost.
Biggest opening for a film not based on existing content is not a failure.

    7. 7

It hat a worldwide record opening weekend!!! how can you say it failed at the box office?!

    8. 8

      IT was FREAKING AMAZING!!!!

    9. 9

You idiot. It's funny how this the only site that says that this movie had a disappointing weekend. Are you not aware that "Avatar" made the highest opening gross for a non-sequel movie? You are so fucking retarded Perez. Get your facts straight dip shit.

    10. 10

I'm looking outside my window at 2 feet of snow, and my car is absolutely buried. Yeah. I would say the blizzard got in the way of me seeing the movie.

    11. 11

are you f-ing serious. this is a brand new franchise. no books, no nothing. it did pretty damn well considering that… even WITH a snow storm on the east coast.

    12. 12

Going to see it tomorrow :D

    13. 13

This movie was pure eye candy — amazingly beatuiful and a MILLION Times a better movie than New Moon - and I liked New moon, but doesnt compare. GO SEE IT — in 3D — worth every penny!

    14. 14

Did you even bother to take into account that The eastern seaboard was snowed in the whole weekend and was not able to go to the movies at all?

    15. 15

umm… this wasnt new moon with a million fan girls. this was an amazing sci-fi movie that will take some time for people to actually love.

    16. 16

I know i didn't have the chance to go see the movie because i was spending my money on christmas presents.
maybe it would have done better some other time.
i mean it is christmastime during a recession.

    17. 17

It actually didn't 'FAIL,' Perez. Its number 1 in the box office and it is expected to do a lot better next weekend because the blizzard in the East Coast will be history then.

In my book, AVATAR was a million times better than dumbass NEW MOON. New Moon was just horrible

    18. 18

iiiiiffff, and i hope to god not, i ever have a chance encounter with you, i will with intent, incite a riot . a big old kick perez shitless riot. you are so ugly inside. you are nothing.

    19. 19

Saw it and really liked it! Wasn't sure how I'd feel about it… but definitely recommend it to others who are also not big scifi fans. :D

    20. 20

      Waterworld :)

    21. 21

I did. It was epic :)

    22. 22

i saw it and loved it. i'm a big twi-light fan and this knocked it out of the water! if anyone is contemplating to see it, GO SEE IT!!! visuals, story, characters were pieced together amazingly and he left no rock unturned.

    23. 23

Remember when he won Best Picture and shouted "I'm the king of the world!" like a total ass?

    24. 24

I saw this movie and i think that it was great. it was one of the best movies that ive seen in a while

    26. 26

The movie is not part of a franchise like Twilight. So to compare it to Twilight is silly. The blizzard also cost Avatar a lot of opening weekend money. Besides it is not really that good of a movie. Avatar really does not have that much broad appeal, with those stupid looking blue people. Visually it is wonderful but after awhile that wears off. The story line seemed to be dancing with blue people instead of wolves.

    27. 27

No, I didn't go this weekend-but I'm definitely going to go.

    28. 28

Actually, AVATAR had the biggest opening weekend for an original piece of work (aka…not a sequel, not a remake, not an adaption of a book or comic). In that regard alone, it could be considered a success. You also have to figure in that audiences are loving this flick. Cinemascore has it rated at a solided A which means it will certainly have legs for the next few weeks. Once again, Perez spouts off on a topic he knows nothing about.

    29. 29

Umm no. The movie cost 228 Million bucks to make and it made 232 million worldwide the first weekend. so it did not fail. It made all of it's money back in the first weekend. So please check the facts in your article before you say it failed.

    30. 30

my god you really are a douche, 232 million in 3 days is horrible? idiot…

    31. 31

New Moon also didn't have to deal with a snow storm hitting the East Coast. Be fair. And a mere 73 million? I'd like to see a movie you make earn that much money

    32. 32

I have a feeling this is one of those films that takes a while to get momentum, Titanic was the same way, and this film was directed by that same director, so shut up for now and wait until you announce a flim a failure. Wasn't your BOOK a failure too ?

    33. 33

maybe the reality of the name- made everyone hard 2 admit that we ARE AVARTAR 's hard to face the truth!!!!!!

    34. 34

This movie is simply spectacular and to compare it to the Twilight film(s) is like comparing juicy red apples to broken dirty bottles. It will in time make back it's money. It's only a matter of time.

    35. 35

I saw this movie on Friday afternoon. Being on the East Coast if you didn't see it on Friday. You were not going to see it on Saturday, or Sunday depending were you live on the East Coast. Because we got SNOWED in. We were on lock down.

    36. 36

Failure? You are an idiot. It just set the record opening for December and posted very strong performance day to day over the weekend (which bodes very well for strong legs).

Not fair to compare w. New Moon which has a rabid established fanbase.

    37. 37

Well, the holidays are coming up- always a good time for movies. Lotsa Upper East $$$iders will have fatter pocket$$$ after Hannukah (as well as certain X-tians, too, to be fair). Billions of $$$ that could be used on lifting up those living in the ghetto will be spent on repeated viewings of the film, I guess.

What will be interesting is how this all plays out on the small screen. Will the 3D technology be as enthralling on a tiny MP3 player?

    38. 38

This movie is brilliant! I feel very bad for you if you don't see it in IMAX 3D. I didn't want to go see it, I was really tired, but my BF was acting like a 5 year old at Toys R Us to see this movie so we went. I was absolutely floored. I get the star wars crazed fans now. Fuck I even signed up for this stupid posse shit just to post about how amazing this movie is. I hate CG movies, but this one actually had a story to it. The CG is beyond extraordinary.

George Lucas and Speilberg are crying into their pillows at night because of this movie.

    39. 39

Long run time = fewer showings at theatres per day.

    40. 40

Perez, stfu, doing $73 mil in an opening weekend is great for any movie. It was a very good movie and those numbers are impressive considering there was no pre-existing fanbase like the Twilight movies. A lot of my friends who saw it were even talking about seeing it again. I think this movie will have legs and will recoup its money.

    41. 41

So making $300 million worldwide is a fail hhhmmmmm! What an intersting concept! Im sorry Perez but I thing what your saying is absolutly false! I saw the movie and it was EPIC! The word of mouth of this movie is insane it is spreading like wild fire everyone who I have spoken to loved it and would see it again at the movies even though its 2.5 hours long! IMAX are even sold out who in there right mind would sit all the way in the front seats at an IMAX theatre now thats dedication!

    42. 42

definitely not disappointing…. its not a franchise like every other movie who opens with the numbers you gave…
and even if it doesnt make 500 million, it will continue to make money because of the new technology they invented to make this movie..
i'd say its a very very impressive opening weekend.

    43. 43

Perez hates anything more popular then him….Which is a lot of shit sooo…

    44. 44

I am big Twilight fan and NM can't touch this movie. I was a bit disappointed with NM. But, this movie….WOW!!!! It is by far one of the best or the best movie ever made.

    45. 45

i saw it on Saturday. it was AMAZING, truly the next step in movie magic. i still cannot believe how incredible it looked.

    46. 46

It seems passe to make a movie that costs that much money in these economic times. A studio forks over $500 million to make a movie and theres people who cant afford to feed their kids in the country…just seems off.

    47. 47

SUCH A GOOD MOVIE!!! GO SEE IT!

    48. 48

Saying it FAILED is a little premature…This movie has legs and will continue to pull in solid numbers… If you recall, Titanic pulled in a paltry 27 million first weekend. Yeah, that movie failed in your eyes too. Crap movies live and die by first weekend numbers cause they know the bad word of mouth and no repeat viewings will kill em for a nice long run.

    49. 49

    50. 50

The movie has gotten a lot of rave reviews, yet you bash it for something as superficial as failing to bring in screaming fangirls? Titanic opened under $30 million and ended up grossing $1.8 billion. Good movies don't necessarily start out with a bang out of the gate.

There is something malevolent about your post (this film did not "FAIL")– I wonder you're pissed that no one in the Avatar camp kissed up to you so you're trying to give them bad press.

Also Cameron spent a lot of money on the film because he CARED about producing a film befitting his inner vision. Summit spent $50 million on New Moon because they were cheap and you don't need much money for some girl to sit around and do nothing.

I plan to see it — this coming weekend. I just hate going to movies on opening weekend.

    51. 51

Really? The 'blizzard on the east coast?' GET OVER IT. It snowed like, 72 inches all at once in Valdez, Alaska this past week. THEY HAVE TO CREATE SNOW TUNNELS IN THE ROAD TO DRIVE. The continental US needs to man up in a hurry.

    52. 52

It was INCREDIBLE. GO SEE IT EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    53. 53

Holy shit, Mario! Now you are at a new low. Making up (flat out lying) statistics which every other news site, tabloid site and movie monitoring site can dispute! What I don't get is - WHY do you do this? What kind of satisfaction does it give you? Are you so obsessed with the failure of life and people that you make up negativity just to feed your addiction with it?

    54. 54

    55. 55

I saw Avatar opening night (midnight show) and thought it was spectacular. This weekend, I was asked by a couple dozen people if it was good and almost all of them thought it would be just "eh" … I think word of mouth is going to push this to be a big ticket movie over time instead of just a big opening weekend and then die down to nothing over the next couple of weeks.

    56. 56

I saw it the day before the storm started and I thought it was pretty awesome. we just went for the heck of it, but it was worth it! but yeah the blizzard stopped it from earning more money because no one can go see it now!

ps perez.. I wonder if you saw it before you critisize how much it got.. plus, on weekend wont make 400 million dollars considering not everyone is fortunate enough to go see it .. im pretty sure the money will be made up with its money.

    57. 57

Your post is somewhat malevolent — as if you delight in pronouncing the film a "FAIL" when you clearly haven't seen it. Are you hoping to get the Cameron camp to send you free tickets or something? How obnoxious.

    58. 58

I hate sci-fi and this movie was amazing! GO SEE IT!

    59. 59

This was such an amazing movie! I am sure it will pick up at the Box Office!

    60. 60

i saw it friday night and thought it was great!!!!!

    61. 61

I wanted to sooo bad. On the east coast, all the theaters were closed Saturday and Sunday where I am.

    62. 62

Ummm this is not a box office bomb! Perez you don't know what your talking about. Titanic only opened with 28 million it's first weekend and went on to make 600 million in the end. Avatar will keep performing strong through the holidays and then all the award buzz and word of mouth will help this movie keep bringing in money as the weeks to come. Not to mention if it does get nominated for Oscars that will strongly help it make more money. Your calling this movie a bomb a little to soon.

    63. 63

do some research Perez the movie budget wasnt 500 million is was less than 260 million so Pirates, Spiderman 3 and other movies actually cost more. ALSO, Avatar is a new franchise, its not based on a book or comic book or video game like all blockbuster movies that make 100+ million in its opening weekend.

    64. 64

Your a fuckin idoit perez, it cost 300 million to make, it was the biggest december opening ever and this was a movie made for everybody not for some stupid teen girls and that gay ass twilight shit. your a fuckin moron perez, you dont know shit about anything just stop talking.

    67. 67

EY MARIO. New Moon comes from a book franchise, that has a well established fan base. As in Avatar, this is a movie that a few people in comparison to the Twilight franchise knew about. So the figures that you put up to make a point, doesn't make any sense. Avatar will thrive through word of mouth and DVD sales……….SO STFU ASSHOLE.

    68. 68

oh my gosh!!! I loved this film. It was amazing!! it look beautiful, story line was really good and to top it off, it has Sam Worthington in it!!!

    69. 69

Dumbass, since it is so long, it doesn't have a many showing as other movies, so that also puts a limit on how much it can take in.

    70. 70

failed… lol. failed is your post.

    71. 71

I've seen it and it was awesome. This movie will rake in far more than it cost to make over time. Nice try on the doom and gloom fatso - its obvious from this post you haven't even seen it yourself, so my advice to you is don't comment next time until you can make an informed statement!

I think 'Avatar' will still gross well over 800 million worldwide. It really is spectacular.

    73. 73

I did see it, it's ok, but I don't see whats all the fuzz is about and almost everything is digital or special effects …. how the hell did they spend 500 MIL !!!
the catering must be really good I guess

    74. 74

The numbers you cite don't represent a fail in any way. 232$ mil worldwide? Pretty good. Amazing ride of a film, BTW. I absolutely loved it.

    75. 75

Be serious. All the east coast cities were hit with a terrible storm. Next weekend will be much bigger.

    76. 76

This story is idiotic. Avatar was by no means a flop. Did you forget a massive snowstorm crippled much of the east coast this weekend?
Avatar is a hit. It has gotten stellar reviews and a cinemascore rating of an A which is rare.
Dear god this site is pathetic.

    77. 77

What archaic system do you use for your posting? Takes a FEW minutes my ass.

    78. 78

i really hate the way you report on numbers and sales. you need to do your homework, and you need to be consistent.

titanic made half of what avatar made, and look what happened with it. chill

    79. 79

I saw AVATAR last night on 3-D and I must admit that it was one of ,if not the, most amazing experience I have ever had in a movie theatre other than the time I was watching The Dark Night with porn star Aaron Tanner and we got to play with each others "Johnsons" throughout the whole movie.

The story in AVATAR is old but superbly reinvented and welcomed, but even if you don't care about a remake of Dances with wolves + the transformers + Jurasic Park the effects and the technology far surpass any storyline negatives.

If you ever wanted to know how it would feel to jump right into a film, then you better not miss this one, or you can always try calling Aaron Tanner for dinner and a movie and hope for the best.

    80. 80

I think the blizzard is to blame. I saw it and it was AMAZING

    81. 81

I saw this movie on Saturday on an IMAX screen. It is the greatest movie of all time. Box office receipts were hindered by snow in the East, the last shopping weekend before Christmas, and an almost three hour running time. Word of mouth will ultimately make this a success. Everyone needs to see this film.

    82. 82

Avatar made 73 million dollars on it's own. Twilight and movies based off of books already had fans before the movies came out. So i think avatar did well with no pre fan base.

    83. 83

AMAZING MOVIE. I didn't think it was going to be good at all, I usually don't like science fiction movies but it was for sure worth seeing

    84. 84

it was the east coast blizzard most likely because i and everyone i kno did not leave the house saturday and even the federal gov in my area was off on monday

    85. 85

      Erm . . . $232.2 million makes it the 9th largest opening-weekend gross of all time . . . Just sayin

LOL Perez said Avatar failed LOL….now that is the funniest thing I ever heard. I hadnt found one site calling it a failure other than this place. Perez do your research buddy. Titanic opened way less than this movie on its opening weekend and became the BIGGEST money making movie of ALL Time.

Now my review on Avatar. One of the most amazing piece of filmmaking I have ever seen my whole life. The story was good, the special effects was out of this world and the 3D thing..you feel like you are in the movie. Avatar is the best movie of all time in my opinion. If you have not seen it, you are missing out on a piece of history. Go watch it in 3D. I gotta watch it again this time on IMAX

    90. 90

Avatar is an amazing movie, New moon is bullshit… Avatar is a wonderful movie, espectacular…you should go to see it!! and it's not a fail!

    91. 91

      92

I have no doubt that this cuts into Cameron's lofty expectations for the film.
But a ray of hope exists.
The sci-fi actioner grossed a scorching $159.2M overseas this weekend boosting the global opening to a towering $232.2M. The figures were on par with the most recent worldwide assault from Hollywood - last month's 2012 - which launched with $65.2M domestically, $165M internationally, and $230M globally. That doomsday pic is now at $733M after five weeks of play and Avatar should be able to have better legs thanks to a stronger product and the upcoming holiday break. Its global gross should have no problem soaring higher. Easily recouping it's cost.

    93. 93

HAHAHAHA 85 COMMENTS telling you what an idiot you are

    94. 94

I have never said anything negative about this site….until now. What the @#?!! is going on ??? The nasty reporting when someone dies, pure speculation, and outright lies leaves me in shock. What's happening. You are going downhill fast. I don't think there is much credibility left to be bothered reading this blog much longer. Hope things change, fast, because I've enjoyed reading the 'scoops' in the past. Now there's only rehashed news, negative comments, and outright lies.

    95. 95

$73m isn't a failure at all… even if you consider that the WHOLE NORTHEAST WAS DEBILITATED FOR TWO FULL DAYS. My house had 22inches of snow dumped on top of it and there were 30mph wind gusts, didn't even attempt to get outside on Sat. On Sun, everyone who wasn't still getting snow was clearing it out.

Plus, this is the weekend before Christmas. I know I can't go see Avatar until after the New Year because of budget restrictions with all the Christmas spending. But I still will go see it… and so will many, many others, which is why Avatar will ultimately do very, very well. Perez, you kinda suck at writing blogs anymore… why don't you hire a writer that actually cares about this blog so that readers can actually enjoy it?

    96. 96

      Re: LetThisGo1

it was the biggest opening ever for a movie that not a sequel or based on anything else

    97. 97

The movie is going to do just fine. You seem to forget that it's a holiday weekend. I bet it's going to make more money this coming weekend.
The movie was fantastic and I would love to see it again.

    98. 98

I desperately wanted to see it but was stuck in the house due to the 20 inches of snow outside.

    99. 99

      omg best movie ever!!

      TOTALLY FERN GULLY

    100. 100

your a retard Perez. the movie did amazing. Why don't you talk about Lady Gaga's disappointing album sales for The Fame Monster or her cheap ass looking and down right boring tour??!! oh wait because your too busy licking her asshole to say anything bad about her.
