Rage Against Simon Cowell! Killing In The Name Of Is #1!

They actually pulled it off!
After much urging via the internet, Rage Against The Machine's 1992 single, Killing in the Name Of now holds the top spot as the UK's Christmas Number One!
The political hard rockers wanted to take Simon Cowell and X Factor winner Joe McElderberry down a peg and begged their fans to download the single to prevent Joe from being #1!
And they did!
RATM's Killing in the Name Of was downloaded more than 500,000 times in the past week while McElderberry's Miley Cyrus cover only sold 450,000 copies.
Wonder what Simon will have to say….

Good! Love Rage; hate Simon.
killing in the name of is a great song. if joe whatever his name is was doing a cover of any other single but miley's, maybe ratm would not have bothered to go through with this. but this is a cover of a miley cyrus song. and yet it solf 450,000. does that mean there are more than 1000 lunatics out there who would like to throw their money away?
Omg. This is just like the movie Love Actually. Some old has been asks everyone to make him number 1 for christmas in order to beat out some gay boy band. Too funny.
Lulz!
You (or your sister or whoever the fuck) got the X Factor guy's name wrong.
WTH? Who covers Miley Cyrus' music?! No wonder the cover wasn't a success!
That's pretty fvcking awesome
Group think. Many hands make light work, hehe. Interesting phenomena, this.
Congratulations RATM you've won the battle of corporate pop music! Now go make Ticketmaster some more money.
Hey, dumbass. The song is called Killing in the Name. Not Killing in the Name OF. And yeah, Tracy, you love Rage so much you don't know the title of one of their most well-known songs? Please.
good though this is i have to point out your about 8 hours behind on this.
what the fuck is this? high school? grow the fuck up.
I heart RATM!
Although my sympathies and luck go out to Joe for working so hard!
For anyone that has the IQ to say 'Why did he cover Miley Cyrus?' ect. shit;
Use your brain you arseclamp, he climbed to his dream, which is in meaning the reason Miley Cyrus released.
Retarded mongoose.
Yes! XD
i think this was totally unfair on Joe
Brilliant!
YAHOO!! I did it!
He downloaded it himself com on
tht show was fix with cole to let tht 18 old crooner alike to win who is already nobody
I LOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVEeeeeeeeeeeeeee this.
YES!! Zach!
you idiot, i wonder if you ever read the comments. RATM had NOTHING to do with the internet campaign, they only expressed their support a few days ago.
and i'm glad they won. even in the club i bartend in (which mainly plays mainstream rnb crap) they played killing in the name twice tonight. hah:)
YES! So today's youth is not lost afterall! And as far as the whole "Bullying" thing goes…it's not bullying this teen karoke boy. It's about protesting this stupid trend. Stick with real music, not people who can't even write their own songs and have to COVER OTHER PEOPLE'S SHITTY MUSIC.
THEY DID FUCKING NOT ask their fans to download their song you complete fucking moron. DID NOT DID NOT DID NOT. Do you not do ANY sort of research before you come on here and spew your fucking lies????This was a grass roots campaign to make A xmas number one anything BUT a song from X Factor.
Fuck you're just a piece of fucking work and to all your 'fans' who believe the shit you write: You're complete fucking morons who need to read other news outlets beside this piece of shits.
FUCK YOU RATM .. You took away the title to a boy who worked hard. Happy Now BULLIES!
Re: gossipfan26 – What's unfair is all of the money and promotion spent on haven't-even-been-yets rather than giving a leg up to career/working musicians who have chops and have been slogging it out from town to town and bad bar to bad bar. Easier to control a talent contest winner who thinks they've just been given the key to the castle, and the promoter's percentages stay higher that way; never mind if it's extruded pop garbage. I heard they sign prospective contracts even before they win anything, just in case. Anyone know if that's a fact?
Now we need to get this sort of thing to happen all the time, to prove a point to the record executives and corporate greedy idiots that we do NOT want to hear miley cyrus or taylor swift
Too bad for Joe. He didn't even had the chance to be a one hit wonder.
I don't like the RATM song but I just hate Joe's cover. For once, I liked Miley's better. Why can't X Factor produce an original song rather than doing a cover for winner's single? Peter Kay did a better job on composing his own winner's song for his reality show parody.
YYAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE WON!!!
Dumbass, Rage Against The Machine had nothing to do with the campaign till the closing stage. It was two brits working outside the machine.
FUCK YOU SIMON DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE "RAGE"
hopefully someone will take this serious somehow and we don't have to be pestered with all of this brain- and soulless music anymore, but "musicians" will put some effort in their "music" again.
Re: dmd856 – not RATM took it away, the people did - and the people would have given the titel to this joe. rage are legends, being around for 17 years means something, i guess. and at least they're donating all of the money people spend on their song to support the homeless people in the UK, what a better christmas gift one can wish for?
i love rage against the machine, and i dont really watch x factor so i dont care, but everyone's saying that 'rage against the machine are number 1, haha simon cowell' but the thing is, simon cowell has still made millions, from the series, and the downloads of joe's single, AND rage against the machine are on epic records, which is owned by sony, so anyone who has shares or whatever in sony, is going to be pleased with this, and simone cowell, works at sony.
WIN.
I'd say Simon is saying 'CHING CHING!!' considering both acts are signed to the same record company, morons.
Re: laura9 – Beat me to it! Wish Perez would chck all his facts before he posts - moron!
its Joe Mcelderry ….. and he sings the song well RATM didnt deserve to win at all they had their chance and that song only made it to 25 last time it was in the charts ….. Joe should have won he has worked really hard to get to this and it was stolen from him to prove a point , its harsh and pathetic.
Re: Canuka – oh my gosh i was thinking the same thing. i feel a bit sorry for joe, the poor lad caught up in all this, but im glad simons been taught a lesson
The song is called Killing in the Name. Sigh.
Re: bella_1234 – i'm thinking of being ashamed about my nickname.. wait.. second.. no.. but IPAC would've been the better choice for me - too bad i was just listening to "epic" while signing up
Joe McElderberry?!?!?!? That's your worst pun yet. Plus it's called 'Killing in the name' NOT 'Killing in the name of'
do you EVER get your facts right?…………um no………..youve written about this story three times now and each time the facts are wrong. rage did not start the campagin and beg fans to buy the single. it was started by FANS and HATERS of the XFACTOR, jeez you really are dumb
There was no begging involved, especially from Rage! And yes, you did spell Joe's last name wrong.. you're real smart.
Rage fucking rules.
Only 450,000?
It's a difference of 50,000. That is hardly a flop. Not to mention, Rage's song would have easily been beaten by a Mikey Cyrus cover…that is nothing to be proud of. Had they not begged their fans, well, you get the gist.
YES! My youth will be meaningful now….
OMG PEREZ THEY DIDN'T ASK THEIR FANS TO BUY THEIR SINGLE.
SOME WOMAN STARTED THE CAMPAIGN, NOT RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE!!!
WHY WOULD AN AMERICAN BAND BE BOTHERED ABOUT UK CHRISTMAS NUMBER 1'S????
SRSLY, GET YOUR STORY STRAIGHT. YOU'RE ANNOYING.
RATM had nothing to do with this, but they are donating all proceeds from this chart success to the homeless charity Shelter plus Joe gets to go down in history as part of this battle - he wil be remembered over and above most of the other winners who actually got to xmas no. 1 (Leon Who? Shane What?) so EVERYONE involved is a winner by Rage being no. 1. Oh. Except Cowell. Which makes this result even more awesome….
rage didn't even know about this campaign until a few days ago and it's 'killing in the name' not 'killing in the name of' and why is nobody mentioning the fact that are donating millions to shelter.
btw do you realize the UK has a smaller population than the USA, 450,000 is a heck of a lot but anyway GO RAGE!!!!
Simon is cool - whats your problem?
1. His name is Joe Mcelderry, not Mcelderberry. Where the fuck did you get that from!? 2. RATM didnt start this, it was a group on fb. 3. I dont understand how Joe couldnt get to number one when something like 18 million people watched the x factor final :/ Not that i care too much, i dont like joes version of the climb, dont like RATM song… i think they should have campaigned for a xmas song! Wouldnt that have been nice for once!?
rage flippin blows, everyone acts like they're musical genius like that retard gaga.
He's sooooo dreamy!
I don't think its fair at all, and in no way would they have actually won if people were just buying one copy, when people were buying 3, all from different websites, and some people were even gifting the songs to other people just to get them to nmber 1, when, it doesn't actually prove anything.
If a better song was gonna be used against x factor, i'd have been all for it (i personally wanted 3OH!3 ft Katy Perry to be number 1) but seriously, rage against the machine are terrible.
Joe will probably be number 1 next week, and for the morons who participated that think just because Joe was beaten to christmas number 1 X factor is now going to stop, its not.
If the same thing is done next year, I beg for a better song, if not an actual christmas song.
Rage did not "beg" their fans to but the single, they had nothing to do with it until last week and it's joe MCELDERRY
Joe didn't get to pick the song his single would be you know, Simon Cowell did.
Everyone seems to have forgotten the money raised for Shelter that the campaign raised and the money Rage are going to donate to music charities through all of this. People should do their research, 1 get the name of the song right, 2 get Joe's name right and 3 Rage had nothing to do with the campaign, they just showed their support last week. It was a couple on FB that started it all. Why are people saying it unfair on Joe, he lost if people wanted him to get to no1 more people should have bought his crap single.
Elderberry!! Haha awesome.
Simon Cowell has achieved the same degree of infamy as Microsoft, which is not an easy thing to do. Probably many more people dislike MS than like them; but the truth is that few of us would have the computers we do or be able to accomplish what we can with them if this company had never existed.
Simon Cowell, is probably disliked by more people than like him, too. Whenever he gets ready to speak, we expect him to be negative about what we've just heard. The funny thing is that although he's not right in every instance, he has managed to identify and promote more than 40 successful artists in his short career. I doubt that there's anyone else in the world who has achieved this.
So whatever we think about his comments or decisions regarding any one particular act, we have to acknowledge that he does know what he's doing; and at the very least, we ought to listen to him.
Cheers, Bruce
RATM didn't urge people to buy it perez, until towards the very end. it was the two people who started the campaign and then all the supporters..
it wasnt them that made people do it, it was an internet campaign created by someone who doesnt know them! they were just the chosen song! last year it was someone different, it just didnt catch on, this year it DID.
also, you got the name wrong.
there are quite a few people that don't even LIKE this song (myself included) but i still bought it purely because it was going to charity and the fact that it's going to show the X-Factor idiots that we are NOT going to stand for them being christmas number 1 each year!! it's not fair! wheres out christmassy songs? or bands that have struggled for years. not some karaoke singer.
how many times do people have to tell you you fat fuck - RATM had nothing to do with this campaign, they only spoke out in support of it a few days ago. I think it's brilliant, about time we took control and stopped this gauranteed xmas number one thing the xfactor have been doing for years.
THEY DID NOT ASK THEIR FANS TO BUY THE SINGLE!!!!!!!!!!!
.
The last time you posted this story, everyone made the same comment - it was an internet movement from their fans. The band had no part in it.
.
The profits were also donated to the Shelter charity in the UK. You make RATM look like a bunch of arses who only wanted to take down the X Factor winner. Not the case at all.
Woo! Thank fuck for that!
Since when is 'only sold 450,000 copies' a bad thing? That is still a pretty impressive number. Much better then a lot of songs.
Re: Unari – You're as big an idiot as Perez! You'll believe anything you hear. RATM did NOT ask their fans for this.
This doesn't make any difference to Simon Cowell, both acts are signed to his record label Sony/BMG. So he made money regardless.
Lol … ok first I love how you spelt Joes name wrong! It's poetic justice to the crapness that he is.
x
and secondly this is amazing, this is the first real step the british public have taken in the fight against shit TV like the X Factor! We've all had enough of the bloody karaoke singers that are turfed out year after year and it's about time people realised that they are nothing compared to established bands thata ctually CARE about what they do like RAGE!
Simon can put that in his pipe and smoke it … can't wait to hear Killing in the name blaring out the radio xmas morning
I LOVE THIS! I enjoy X Factor very much …BUT Simon should read the signs!!! It´s time to fucking create original music and stop coming up with the same shitty singers every year. Have some balls and do something worth listening to, Si!
I also love the fact that Cheryl Cole has finally not had everything she wanted… The UK pretty much bum her when shes still the girl who attacked someone in a night club.
It's been said a few times here already but i feel like it needs to be said again. RATM did not start this campaign, it was started by two people in the UK. RATM only lended their support to the campaign a few days before the result was announced and pledged to donate earnings from sales of the song to a homeless charity known as Shelter. Last i heard over £60,000 was raised. Perez, you really should set the record straight on this one as is evident from the comments below, some people have got the wrong idea as a result of your lazy/irresponsible journalism. Do the right thing!
Who the fuck is Joe Mcelderberry?! its Joe MCELDERRY, you fat retard
Am I the only person who is sick of people posting o n this that have no clue what they're actually talking about?
RATM had NOTHING to do with this campaing, it was a man & woman who set it up of their own accord, Rage only heard about it last week sometime.
Proceeds from the single went to the Shelter charity and so far have raised £80,300.17.
Bulk perchasing was not allowed, orders were being tracked and if you downloaded more than I think it was 2 copies? then that download didn't count.
Both acts are NOT signed to Simon Cowells record label, do your research before talking about stuff you CLEARLY have no clue about.
Joe is signed to Syco music, of which Simon Cowell is the founder.
RATM are signed to Epic records.
Yes, the both of them are owned by Sony, but NOT Cowell.
ha ha
im sure simon is more annoyed than Joe, aww bless him, he's a sweetie, but, its made it all a bit more exciting!!
I love RATM, and don't have a clue who is Joe McWhatever who did a cover version of a song originally performed by another-no-clue singer… BUT..a lot of people spend their money in order to put RATM in front of Joe Doe on some BS chart…hey, people, I am making BS chart, and I will put Joe on the top. If you want someone else on the top, mail me some money, thank you.
i'll b seeing joe down powerhouse in newcastle and consoling him.
Simon will probably be laughing all the way to the bank, seeing as Rage Against the Machine are on his label…way to stick it to the man…people are stupid
and to all of those people who are goin its unfair on joe because he has worked hard . this type of thinking is the reason RATM did so well ! why should he get number one , surely band like RATM have worked hard , been around longer , write there own music , have actually achvived something!
MCELDERLY - joe mcelderly
Please change it and save yourselves some embarrassment
yeah, it's actually just called killing in the name
This makes me mad because your facts are wrong, i even wrote to you weeks ago to explain this situation, Rage did not start this this was a group started in england which simply gained the support of the band.
oh and to the MORONS that keep going on about them both being signed to the same label, get your facts straight…..SYCO is simon cowell's label, which is owned by sony, yes. but none of the money made by rage will go into his pockets directly. and who gives a fuck if they are signed to sony? its the fact that people wont tolerate being spoon fed this endless shit by the xfactor anymore, that's guarnateed to bo no.1 every single year. the best song won, and that's all there is to it.
Haha! This is amazing! But … "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me?" is the lyric, yet they're asking everyone to download their single. Haha, irony. I, therefore, did not download RATM
NICE…and for all the people who were calling these guys old timers and posers.
EAT THAT.
He won't mind - Rage Against The Machine is signed to Sony BMG - Simon's label - it's pay day for Simon anyhow!
For the last time RATM are NOT on simon cowells record label, they are on epic which is owned by sony!
Go Rage♥
well ratm and joe are both signed to sony, so really simon aint lost out, its still the company he works for thats no 1
The best part is that Rage is donating to a good cause .. win win
THATS NOT WHAT HAPPENED!!!! Rage didnt beg anyone, the UK public were sick of being force fed mass produced, generic so called music and decided to stick one to the Cowell and the other media fat cats…..It was a revolt for the people by the people. We are not sheep.
Re: Woohoooooo! – Actually Sony owns Simon's label so it's a different division. It doesn't matter anyway since that's not what this campaign was about. The stupid X-Factor singers are just handed the no.1 every year, the public just buy their tacky covers like zombies with no taste. Thank goodness that's over!
Re: propp11 – It's actually Joe McElderRy
BOOOOYAHHHHHH
Joe McElderberry? Hahahaha
Re: caybaybee – Are you deliberately missing the point or just dense? This campaign was started to let the manipulating ars*holes at Xfactor know that they aren't automatically entitled to the UK Christmas no1. It could have been achieved using any song, but the group name and song title summed up the feelings of an awful lot of people in Britain today. As for Joe (who I have nothing against) deserving this because he worked so hard and had it stolen from him, it wasn't his in the first place and if you think working hard means having thousands spent on your wardrobe and huge production numbers to show you off then you obviously have never done a proper days work in your life. Hard work for a proper deserving musician means serving your apprenticeship in the clubs and pubs around the country, writing your own songs and building up a loyal fanbase over a long period of time because you deserve it not because some money making mogul is touting you as this years future forgotten nobody! ..just sayin!
