Rage Against Simon Cowell! Killing In The Name Of Is #1!

They actually pulled it off!
After much urging via the internet, Rage Against The Machine's 1992 single, Killing in the Name Of now holds the top spot as the UK's Christmas Number One!
The political hard rockers wanted to take Simon Cowell and X Factor winner Joe McElderberry down a peg and begged their fans to download the single to prevent Joe from being #1!
And they did!
RATM's Killing in the Name Of was downloaded more than 500,000 times in the past week while McElderberry's Miley Cyrus cover only sold 450,000 copies.
Wonder what Simon will have to say….

I am not going to give myself explosive diarrhea over whether or not you got the name of the song right. I do not give a shit. The whole campaign is stupid. If you are against XFactor or whatever the hell, then don't give them more publicity. If the band is so damn great, they will come out ahead no matter what. Simon probably doesn't give two shits about the whole thing.
Re: propp11 – its Mcelderry lol
The song is called Killing In The Name. I think this is hilarious. I feel kind of bad for the kid that didn't get the #1 spot, but that's what you get when you cover a MILEY CYRUS SONG. I don't even really care for RATM but I respect what they're all about. They threw a free concert here in Minnesota during the RNC, although they were shut down so they did it a capella. Totally awesome. The voice of the people was heard.
AWESOME!!!!
HAHAHA, SERVES THE FUCKTARDS AND SIMON COWELL RIGHT!! TO THINK RATM "KILLING IN THE NAME" IS SOME 20YRS OLD IS A MORE AMAZING FEAT. PROOF IS ORIGINAL MUSIC CAN TRUMP ANY POP MANUFACTURED MEDIOCRE BULLSHIT. THAT WAS THE POINT. OH, AND KEEP IN MIND, RATM IS A 2 TIME GRAMMY WINNING BAND WHETHER U TEENY FUCKHEADS LIKE THAT OR NOT! LMAO.
SHOWS WHEN REALITY IDIOTS BOMBARD MASS TV THEY WILL CONVINCE ANY MORON TO BUY WHAT THEY WANT!! COWELL IT'S OVER. KISS MY ASS!! TEAM RAGE FOR THE WIN. +1
I'm really glad that RATM got to number one. I'm not a fan of this song but it shows that even if you win a tv singing competion like Xfactor or idol you are not guaranteed the number 1 spot.
Hopefully Joe can see this and can apreiciate how high he got in the charts.
they didnt beg for anyone to download anything lol they just encouraged it…
well done everyone who bought the single. nothing against jo, shame it wasn't more of a xmas song though. oh well
Joe McElderberry must be annoyed, whoever he is. Meanwhile, Joe McElderry came 2nd to RATM in the charts. Any chance of a story on that??
my faith in humaity has been just slightly restored. I still think most people are brainwashed assholes who think Gaga is art and love these Pop Star Factories that keep churning 'em out like the Duggers churn out babies, but this is a lovely little upset. The most punk-rock thing to happen in a while.
love you perez! and i think its a riot that all these people claim to hate you and post nasty comments, yet they read your blog almost every day and pay attention to minute details of your reporting! so really, you win perez, fuck the haters!!
Wow–it's like Kanye taking the Mike out of Taylor Swift's hand all over again…
On the one hand, I understand the frustration with more *manufactured* music. On the other hand, they just made themselves a bunch of money. It would have meant more if they had considered giving some of their profits to charity or something. Instead, they made it off of an old song at the expense of some young kid. It ends up just coming across as kind of sleazy.
Here in the UK we have the prize X-Mas Number 1 Single still. For the last few year's Simon Cowells X Factor contestant have won it. Apart from Leona Lewis I can't for the life of me think who they were. Who cares they are in McDonalds serving Happy Meals no doubt.
I digress
Anyway a campaign on the internet was set Jon and Tracey Morton to avoid this happening again. The campaign began with RATM 'Killing in the Name of' song as a protest against the Corporate Competition.
This was done well in advance of the latest of the Cowell production line X Factor winner Jo (even I can't remember his surname).
Cowell has so much contempt for the music in the UK he chose a Miley Cyrus song.
RATM were apparently informed last week about the campaign. In short had nothing to do it. It was the downloading public who elected to buy it. (X Factor supporters claiming that people couldn't buy Joe's song as it was snowing even though it is available online and in the shops'. The result is that 'Killing in the Name of is now the most 'downloaded' single in the UK.
Anyway RATM have promised a large proportion of the proceeds from the single will go to a homeless charity here in the UK.
I like Joe but I looooove RATM and the whole war against Simon was a great idea. We should be doing stuffs like that here in the US.
It's all kind of stupid considering that rage against are under simon cowell's record label! He winss both ways !
RATM SONG IS SHIT…IT'S NOISE AND NOT EVEN MUSIC..RAP IS CRAP..EXCEPT A FEW SONGS WHICH ACTUALLY IS CATCHY AND HAS A POSTIVE MESSAGE..NOT VIOLENCE ETC…GRANTED SIMON SHOULD'VE GIVEN JOE AND ORIGINAL SONG..BUT JOE'S THE ONE OUT ON THIS FEAT..HE'S GREAT AND SHOULD HAVE A LIFELONG CARREER IF HE'S HANDLED RIGHT…PLUS HE'S SO ADORABLE…….PHARO
I feel sorry for Joe at least he knows the campaign wasnt directed at him as stated on bbc breakfast this morning it was against there no longer being fun in the christmas number 1 and it being dominated by xfactor.
Firstly, Not that this campaign had anything to DO with record labels but let's just clear this up..RATM and the Xjunk song are on different record labels, both owned by Sony which is a Japanese company. It's not like Simon Cowell made money when I bought a PS3 for god sake!
Rage expressed their support of the campaign but did not lead it.
So glad that we made this happen. X-factor has gone too far.
Best Song by RATM- Ever. Period.
elderberry?
'Joe McElderberry'
you fat piece of shit.
is that seriously the best you can do.
you're fucking loser perez.
Gaga doesnt even like you
you're just that annoying stalker friend that nobody wants around.
you and your minging little dog should piss off.
HOORAY!!! Now that's something to celebrate.
fucking right!
whilst i think it's great that there's a break from x-factor for once and that the lyrics of killing in the name lend themselves well to th general mood of the people who downloaded it (i wont do what you tell me etc.) it has to be remembered that christmas no.1s havent enjoyed much credibility musically in recent times anyway, see bob the builder, westlife, mr blobby. Hopefully this is the turning point where we can return to the quality songs that made the christmas no.1 so important, like Human League and Pink Floyd, Band Aid. It would have been nice aswell if the campaign had backed a new independant act instead of someone who already got their chance 17 years ago, but im still not knocking the effort.
Also, joe won a record deal, not the right to no.1.
Mario, listen carefully. The online action was started by JON AND TRACY MORTER from Essex. RATM had absolutely nothing to do with it. They found out about it through the media, and were very supportive of it. Joe deserved to LOOSE. Next time X-Factor needs to write its own winning song, and at least expect the winner to be able to sing with a LIVE BAND! No one deserves a number one slot singing karaoke.
FINAFUCKINGLLY!!!Real music finally wins out!!!!RAGE WILL ALWAYS BE THE GREATEST BAND PERIOD.
Re: brofoski – r u kidding, you are an idiot miley.
YES! Up yours Cowell
who is joe mcelderberry :S its mcelderry aaand the campaign wasnt started by ratm. DO YOUR RESEARCH.
How can people argue that Joe worked so hard he deserved christmas number one? He entered a t.v. show and was given a record deal and a already rubbish song to cover. Covering a song by a teenage popstar really isnt trying very hard. Most artists actually work hard writing their own music and lyrics, and getting record deals has taken a lot of them years.
The climb might be the worst song I've ever heard, number two over christmas is really a lot more then he deserved, he should be pretty happs.
Why are people so stressed about the Elderberry thing, Joe is barely famous, Perez hilton has real celebrities to write about, this is probably the most attention he will get so he really should be thankful.
hey. look. im british and i watch the xfactor and JOE. MCELDERY has an amazing voice so all those haters why dont u shut up n go and watch american idol. NOT XFACTOR!!
and btw LIVVVV he worked very hard he's only 17 but he has a voice of an angel how can u say he didnt work hard to get a voice like that when he is just a kid. ok they shoudnt have picked the climb but he has already nailed the UK . so he doesnt need america. so back off
