After splitting from his wife and teenage sweetheart 3 years ago, Lions rugby player Gareth Thomas has finally admitted he's gay.

Says the rugby player:

"I was like a ticking bomb. I thought I could suppress it, keep it locked away in some dark corner of myself, but I couldn't. It was who I was, and I just couldn't ignore it any more."

His biggest concern was what his teammates and friends would think, but to his surprise it didn't matter to them.

Now, Gareth is going public with his sexuality and hopes it'll help others explaining:

"It's been really tough for me, hiding who I really am, and I don't want it to be like that for the next young person who wants to play rugby, or some frightened young kid…I want to send a positive message to other gay people that they can do it, too."

Good for him!

Hopefully others will see Gareth as a role model for the gay community!

Re: Dark Phoenix – Thank You! That's so true. People need to accept that EVERYBODY'S different and everyone deserves to have a happy, open life.

GOOD FOR HIM! Life is too short to not be yourself & afraid of what others may think. I don't even know the guy & I'm so happy for him…

i play rugby and its a pretty gay sport, whether or not the your teammate (whos shoulder is in your ass) is gay or not doesnt change a thing

Re: Kris221 – What's wrong with his shoulders??? This guy is pretty effin HOT!!! WOW. I have a weakness for Northern European Men! Good for him on coming out! Who really cares what someones sexual orientation is? I don't get why that's a big deal in the 21st century.

Re: Mickey9661 – 101 Who appointed you Hater in Chief? You are overstepping your prerogative when you imply the gay community hates PH. Some may not like him but the universal implication of your post is false.

he didnt have kids. and rugby isnt exactly the easiest sport to come out in so well done. it is possible for him to love his wife but be gay too as well

    8. 108

He's so fucken hot. i want to marry him.

    9. 109

I think its really good that he came out. But, I dont think he's a good role model. Its ok to get a wife, and kids, and then come out? Repressing yourself like that is the worst thing you could do if you're gay. I suppose you could say he's a role model for gay closeted thirty-something men with a wife and kids.

I commend Gareth Thomas' honesty and acceptance. Sure I've never heard of him, but regardless he is doing something incredible for our community. He breaks the mold of the homosexual. If he does nothing but break the stereotype of the gay man, I'm satisfied. :) Plus he's gorgeous.

He's gay! how is that even celebrity news?! Y do gay ppl think just because someone has come out of the closet they are either role models or should be applauded! do something worthwhile maybe then you'll deserve 2 be called a role model

    12. 112

Why should it matter if he's gay or not?

    13. 113

Also, Perez, how is this celebrity gossip? I have never heard of this guy before.

    14. 114

Re: Honk_If_You_Hate_Perez – Dude you are even more pthetic since you read the blog of someone you hate.. What a moron U are

Australian Rugby players are coming out left, right and centre… maybe the NFL could learn something from this? It certainly does not make you less of a man, indeed, it makes you MORE of a man… women need to not make it about themselves when a husband does come out… not everyone's into you girls you know… "he's just not that into you…" remember that movie? I don't condone marrying and having children if it can be avoided… but times are finally changing, so maybe it will happen less and less now… what's a nuclear family anyway?

    16. 116

no wonder he's gay, he's ugly beyond belief. No woman would sleep with him !!!

Re: Bruce Temper – Bruce, you clearly dont know your sport. As a backline player he does not play in the scrums, they dont lock leg and as for some of the comments about him being unknown, I assume you are Americans.Generally you dont know of the world outside the USA. I cannot tell how many times I have been aked stupid questions like " I have a friend in Kenya, you may know him?" Outside of America he is a world LEGEND and a role model for his rugby expoits, similar to Michael Jordan status in USA. Having played rugby for a South African state, I can assure you that it is not a game for sissies. As a gay guy I found it was virtually impossible to come out and he is one brave mother. Also to those idiots who commented re him being a father, he also does not have children! As re his looks he is hot in a many way, not a pretty boy girly look but a man thank God; good on you Gareth
