Asher Roth Denies Gay Rumors!
So is he or isn't he?
After rumors swirled that Asher Roth was going to come out on E! News this week, the "I Love College" rapper has issued an official statement to set the record straight — literally:
“I hate to disappoint and take away the entertainment of it all but I am straight, not gay. It’s disheartening to know such news on someone’s personal life can be portrayed as fact with no viable source. This, to me, is an opportunity to expose our vulnerability to lies and manipulation through unprofessional and irresponsible news outlets, in which people consider TRUTH.
"Further, someone’s sexual orientation should NEVER be big news, as it delivers a troubling message to children that they can’t be themselves without fear of judgement. Race, creed, and sexual persuasion should not just be tolerated but understood and accepted. It’s extremely disappointing that this topic would be used with the intention of being hurtful. We are near 2010….2010!! Yet race, sex and religion still play a major role in a hate-driven society.For the love of the future and humanity….let’s wake up.”
The rumors surfaced due to former MTV executive Terrance Dean posting on his blog that Asher was the gay rapper featured in his book Hiding in Hip-Hop: Confession of a Down Low Brother in the Entertainment Industry. Roth was also seen at the Gay Rights Parade in NYC.
Maybe he's just an ally?

im not against people by any means, but it is 2010. as in, the world used to be ok with gayness, but it became untolerated, and stayed that way for along time! so the fact that people are still uneasy about it and judgemental is alittle understandable…

Asher Roth is talking about how it all shouldn't be an issue nowdays and that he's not gay and ust gay friendly… but you speculating on sexuality cause he is supporting gay rights is so kindergarden and so homophobic!!! Why does Perez put so much emphasis on people coming out? For being such a proponent, he goes against the idea of creating normalcy and unison for all by constantly sensationalizing the topic.

Well stated, take it for the truth, he is NOT gay. Doing a quick check it appears Perez never printed this rumor but I could be wrong.
The Gay Pride (not rights) Parade in NYC is so large it is hard not to be seen at it if you are anywhere in Manhatten.
I just want to point out that outing by association hurts us all, many straight friends and allies will go to gay clubs, marches, parades, etc. and if people go and print they are gay based on this (although it is not an insult), allies will be less likely to go along.

How can Asher Roth talk about setting a good example to children when his hit song "I Love College" brags about getting a girl naked. As an adult that song is funny … however the message it sends to children and teens is all about drinking and partying. Sexual orientation is no business of anybody's to jusdge; however him talking about setting a good example for children … come on….
Being an alley is hard. I go to conventions and rallies all the time with no relation besides just a strong belief in equality. The first time I told my mom about going to a convention she asked if I was a lesbian. I just laughed and said no. I deeply appreciate what he said. Tolerance is never enough. Being understood is the new goal.

It may seem noble and accepting of Asher Roth to undermine our present society which seeks to categorize, hate, and judge, however Roth begins his crusade with a categorization of himself. If he were to truly follow his own blessings of acceptance for all and be against 'labeling one gay or straight then judging them on that fact' he should not have felt the need to vehemently declare himself straight. This declarance if his sexual orientation falsifies all other claims he makes about accepting all sexual orientations as he seeks to segregate himself to one which is seen as deviant in society

Wow. That is the best response I have ever read regarding rumors, especially regarding sexual orientation. He was way more eloquent that I could ever be and he makes a very good point. It is almost 2010 and what people need in their lives with a few exceptions, is what they need. And he is even more right about children–if my child said they were gay, there is no way I would stifle that in any way. It is not worth them growing up unhappy with themselves or their bodies if they were transgendered even. It is not worth the risk of suicide or sadness. Just not worth it. Go Asher!
