NJ Lawmakers Urge MTV To Cancel Jersey Shore

The New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus has sent a letter to the president of Viacom, MTV's parent company, requesting that the network cancel its runaway hit Jersey Shore because it is "wildly offensive."
LOLs! It's no more offensive than any of MTV's other programming! Teen Mom and The Real World, anyone?
The state lawmakers are also asking advertisers to boycott the show because it "promotes derogatory ethnic stereotypes."

Sorry Perez, but I have to disagree with you on this one. Most of my Italian American friends (from Staten Island, NY) are INSANELY offended by this show. It is completely derogatory and stereotypical. MTV might as well start a show called "THE HOOD" and base it out of Harlem, then see how long that show would last before Sharpton gets involved….just saying.

Everyone knows that all Italian politicians are on the take and connected to the mob. They could care less about stereotypes, they are just trying to shake MTV down for some money. I love me some Guidos.
I don't remember people complaining about the women of "Flavor of Love," "Rock of Love" or "For the Love of Ray J." Personally I find those shows more offensive than "Jersey Shore" but when it comes television and other media outlets, you do have an option to tune it out. I think the standards would be different if it was a sitcom or a scripted show and there was more control of the characters' personalities but this is a "reality show." These are real people representing themselves and hopefully viewers are not interpreting Snooki dancing with her crotch out to all Italian-Americans dancing with their crotch out. The more these Italian-American organizations try fight against the show, the more attention will be attracted. They should sit back and hope that MTV doesn't ask for a second season.

There was an uproar from the black community and black public figures like Oprah, Sharpton, Jackson, Cosby…but for some reason our campaign was labeled as "black folks being too sensitive"…so i have to say I don't feel bad about the MTV show, but I'm not going to support it either. Wrong should be wrong for everyone, not just white Italian Americans who feel targeted.
