Folk singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt died on Christmas Day after a reported suicide attempt earlier this week that placed Chesnutt in a coma.

So sad.

The 45-year-old musician's death was confirmed by his record label, Constellation Records, with a statement on their website reading:

In the few short years that we knew him personally, Vic transformed our sense of what true character, grace and determination are all about. Our grief is inexpressible and Vic's absence unfathomable.

Chesnutt, who had been confined to a wheelchair since the age of 18 after a serious car accident, was discovered by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe in the 80's and went on to release a number of acclaimed records throughout his career.

Collaborator Kristin Hersh posted to her Twitter on Wednesday while Chesnutt was still in a coma, confirming his attempts to take his own life:

"Another suicide attempt, looks bad, coma–if he survives, there may be brain damage. This time, it's real scary: *this* time, he left a note, *this* time, he asked them to call me."

How awful.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

The Salesman and Bernadette. My 2 year-old daughter listens to this every night at bedtime and it's defined these past months for us. Tragic ending for a brilliant man.

      Re: sashabasha
He was in the wheelchair because he was in a wreck while driving drunk when he was 18. A stupid mistake as a kid that shaped the rest of his life.

My thoughts go out to his wife and family as losing some one is never easy - but hopefully Vic has found some peace now as he was always a troubled soul.

I hope that Madonna (who sang one of Vic's songs on a Sweet Relief II album to help musicians without health insurance) or Michael Stipe who "discovered" him will help his family pay for the medical bills he had since he was an uninsured musician.

Vic Chesnutt was a great songwriter and performer. I was lucky to hear him play live a couple of times and am so sorry to hear about his suicide. It's a real loss for his fans and friends.

that is tragic, but I'm glad he didn't linger very long in a coma. Peace to family and friends.

He was just interviewed on the radio in NYC several weeks ago. He discussed his suicide attempts and his life trials, but seemed so sweet and calm. Very articulate and honest, no drama. An interesting and complex man. I hope he's found peace, and the family he so missed. God bless, Vic.

Dopemcee, you're a piece of work. Wow.

For those who DID care about Vic, a fund has been set up with the assistance of Kristin Hersh to help pay his medical and funeral costs. Every penny you donate will go directly to helping out. If you're interested (with thanks in advance), please head over to kristinhersh dott cashmusic dott org forwardslash vic.

you've finally found peace vic, you will be sorely missed

      Re: dopemcee

evacuate earth as soon as possible, shoot yourself in the face immediately and die slow. you are but an insignificant speck in the human spectrum compared to somebody like vic. you are a loser and won't amount to anything important, ever.

i love how all the lunatics who constantly diss and criticize celebs (even racists) are the ones angry at that dope person for criticizing those who commit suicide. ironic much? crazy people unhappy with themselves that have to take it on celebs. how pathetic.

Seek help if you're in a dark place and can't find your way out.

    24. 24

OK, first of all, "Crispy" is an idiot for doing that annoying "FIRST" thing on such a serious post. Second, am I the only one who thinks in any death posts that Perez has no feeling what so ever when he says "So sad." It almost comes off as sarcastic.

    25. 25

Truly sad … a great musician and artist, Vic will be missed.

    26. 26

awwwwwww soooooo saddd especially on christmas! make me wana cry =[

    27. 27

RIP! You are now in the arms of the angels.

    28. 28

dop: That kinda fits ya doesn't it? We all know the "E" is there. Suicide is something you probably can't understand from the basement of your parents house on the couch when ur 40. Sometimes things get really sad. And you're very depressed. I don't condone it or think it's the right thing to do. But I do think you shouldn't be mean to someone that partook in it. It's sad his therapy and drug treatmeant didn't work. Leave him alone and let him rest.
