Why do you say " which ONLY earned $23.5 " implying these ticket sales are miles behind the competition.. which its not… and $23.5 mil is a shit load of money.

You live in a strange world where nothing is impressive to you unless its number one. You did the same thing when Phelps came in second in his swimming match.

  2. 2

Perez - why are you a liar and why do you hate James Carmeon? This is the second week in a row you have lied about who won the box office, it is really weird, you are not putting good energy out there holmes, no one likes a liar.

  3. 3

"Avator" is by far the best movie of the year!
    it's amazing in every levels.
    "it's complicated" is hilarious!
Meryl Streep is once again….on fire!
sensational! she deserved oscar this year with "Julie & Julia"

  4. 4

I saw 2 movies yesterday- Sherlock Holmes and Alvin & The Chipmunk- The Squeakquel, I loved Sherlock Holmes, I would see it again.

  5. 5

i find it funny that perez can say only to 23.5 million dollars. i know that in comparison there is a difference, but really no one would turn down 23.5 million unless they are mentally unstable.

  6. 6

i work at a movie theatre, and to be honest AVATAR would have out sold Sherlock holmes, if there were more showings of it that day. My theatre and most prob. didnt show it till almost 7 o clock.

  7. 7

SHERLOCK HOLMES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE MOVIE ROCKS!!!

  8. 8

Which holiday movie did we see?
The one where my nut case sister and
her husband ruin dinner by fighting
about their druggie son. Highly entertaining!

    *

I saw it on Christmas day. Love Robert Downey, Jr. Great actor. So no complaints there.

    *

However, having been a repeated reader of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's great detective in the holmes stories I can say that outside the names used and the setting being placed in Victorian England this had nothing to do with Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

    *

This was merely a typical over-the-top Hollywood style action flick. Had no resemblance to Conan Doyle's Holmes whatsoever.

    * For those who want to watch a production of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes made true to the books do yourselves a favor and watch the BBC's series from the '80s and '90s with the very great and much lamented Jeremy Brett as the great detective. You can find it one this PBS station or that one somewhere at any given time.

    *

As for the Downy pic, it clearly left it open for a sequel and I will go watch it as well, for no other reason than it's Robert Downey, Jr. But I will do so without linking it to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's masterpiece character.

  10. 10

Robert rocks……had a beer with him once!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. 11

Have seen Sherlock Holmes which SUCKED and Avatar which was visually amazing.

  12. 12

Even the wording here you have something against Avatar. "which only earned $23.5 million Christmas day" and Avatar will finish the weekend in the number 1 spot if you look at the projections.

Before you say I am a fan of that movie. I have not seen it nor the desire to but last week you called it a financial bomb. Including today these are the projected totals for two weeks in theatres. $217M domestic, $255.6 foreign, and $472.6M worldwide.

  13. 13

Going to see Sherlock Holmes today :P

  14. Klown says – reply to this

    14

Even if Holmes got a few million more dollars than Avatar as opposed to less than two it wouldn't be considered "dominating." Both did very well. I love how you try to exaggerate(the word dominated) or bring down things (like saying "only") and almost everyone always sees right through it.

  15. 15

Went to see Avatar… liked. Going to see Alvin, maybe today. No Sherlock - my parents raised me on Basil Rathbone.

  16. 16

    lookz like
    a good movee
    and luv him…

  17. 17

I saw It's Complicated yesterday. LOVED IT!

  18. 18

I can't wait for your fat ass to see how much Avatar makes when all is said and done. You are gonna eat your words, along with everything else in your kitchen.

  19. 19

What the FUCK is your problem with Avatar, you fat fuck. You said that it wasn't even a success and it is. It has already made back what it cost and is on it's way to grossing have a billion in under two weeks. I went to see it in IMAX 3D yesterday and the next showing was wrapped around the fucking block! Shut the hell up.

  20. 20

so excited that they brought this back to the big screen!!! yay!

  21. 21

I think Avatar is by far the best movie of the year, just amazing!!
I'll go a second time next week..

  22. 22

Perez, I go sign with Kahlo. Would you learn the movie business or at least basic math and statistics before you write your catty comments. It is yet another reason why you look totally inept.

  23. 23

sherlock didn't DOMINATE avatar….sherlock was OPENING day….avatar has been out for a little while now.
So, avatar did quite well perez

  24. LDD says – reply to this

    24

Ok, you idiotic Sasquatch, I guess I will have to break it down for you…. AVATAR had already been out for a week when Sherlock Holmes was released, you nimrod. There if Sherlock Holmes did make more money on opening day, it's because the other movie had already been OUT… fuck you're an idiot… your comments are so stupid & childish.

  25. Klown says – reply to this

    25

The day has just begun but since they already determine the estimations early, Avatar earned about 75 million this weekend domestically. Call that bad if you wish but dropping 3% when most movies drop like 15 or more after the first week isn't something that should go unnoticed. It's ok to admit when you're wrong Perez, it means that you learned something.

  26. 26

oh perez. Hating on Cameron is one thing, but for major fans of the film, i just want to update that the film is actually predicted to make between 28-32 million on saturday while Sherlock Holmes is predicted to make 22-23 million. These figures would mean that Avatar is on route to making 76-80 million while Sherlock 66-70 million. Not "only" will it remain in the top spot for the weekend, it will be the best second weekend ever, potentially beating out Dark Knights 75 million weekend and actually increasing over its debut weekend. Hate Cameron or not, the film is breaking records and is here to stay!!!

  27. 27

i cant wait to see what fatty Perez posts after Perez finds out Avatar made 75 million and Sherlock Holmes made 65 million during the weekend. Avatar made 77 million last week, thats about/around 3% drop last week. His precious shitty movie New Moon dropped 70%!!!!!! the following week it was released. Looks like Camerons movie has staying power like Titanic did

  28. 28

Perez thinks he can make people hate stuff he hates, sorry buddy nobody cares what you love and dont love you fat fuck. keep sitting on your fat ass and update us on celebs not your taste for music and movies

  29. 29

aw damn!! sux to be cameron!!!

  30. 30

Avatar is greatly overrated. It was nothing out of the ordinary. A tad boring, even.

  31. 31

Holmes wasn't worth my $12 I paid to see it. I would wait until it comes out video. I hate to say this because I love Robert Downey Jr. But it was pretty awful.

  32. 32

Avatar kicked Sherlock Homes ass the rest of the weekend tho! making 75 million when Homes only made 65.3 for the weekend. So no homes didn't kick avatars ass.

  33. 33

'only'?! the film has grossed almost 400 million in a week or something. and who goes to the cinema on christmas day anyway?

  34. memei says – reply to this

    34

avatar i love you. shut perez with ur propaganda bull

  35. 35

woow your a moron. 91 million is not 15 more million than 75 million. FAIL

  36. 36

I saw Avatar and it made me dizzy.

  37. 37

How bout posting the Real Weekend Numbers. #1 Avatar with 75 Mil #2 Sherlock with 65.4 #3 Alvin and the chipmunks with 50.2 Mil

  38. 38

Avatar is predicted to make $75 million by end of the weekend, while Sherlock is only going to make $65 million.

  39. 39

You skitso. You also think that b/c Sherlock holmes made 1.3 million more then avatar it 'dominated'? wtf You moron buy a freaking calculator or go back to math class something.

  40. 40

    lmfao "Only" 23.5 million.

why do you do these topics when you know nothing about the business? you can say "Only"23.5 if it was the whole weekend, but it was one day, and that whole weeek it was earning 16mil a day

  41. 41

Mario is just jealous because the film features Michelle Rodriguez who he is always talking smack about her sexuality. She rocked in this movie and despite Mario's antics she is not washed up like he would like people to believe. She would kick Mario's ass if the two ever met.

  42. 42

No Doubt Downry is KING of Tinsel Town. Good Show ole man!

  43. 43

Hahaha and funny how AVATAR IS THE NUMBER ONE MOVIE OF THE COUNTRY FOR A SECOND WEEK YOU IDIOT? HOW DID IT DOMINATE IT BY 1 MILLION AND STILL MANAGE TO COME IN 2ND????

  44. 44

perez hates Cameron because New Moon didnt beat Titanic at being the highest grossing movie of all time.

  45. 45

Okay, I love you Perez but Avatar is better than Sherlock! I am guessing the only reason why Avatar "only" made 23 mill is because majority of the people want to see it in imax and there are not of theaters that have more than one room for imax. The imax theater near my house don't allow people to buy tickets online so I went there five hours before the next showtime to get a ticket but it was already sold out.

  46. 46

Perez you're wrong. You need to compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. You can't compare a movie's Friday opening day to another movie's second Friday. Avatar is doing incredibly well considering it still has momentum after 1 week and beating out Sherlock on its opening weekend.

    Comparing Opening Days:
    Avatar $26,752,099
    Sherlock $24,775,000

    Comparing This Saturday (Boxing Day):
    Avatar $28,550,000
    Sherlock $21,950,000

    Comparing Opening Weekends:
    Avatar $77,025,481
    Sherlock $65,380,000

    Comparing This Weekend:
    Avatar $75,000,000
    Sherlock $65,380,000

Lastly, Saturday for Avatar ($28,550,000) beat the opening day of $26,752,099. Sherlock isn't even close.

We-word your article "Avatar Dominates Sherlock". Actually, just we-write the article completely.

  47. 47

    Ya, poor poor Avatar.

According to studio estimates Sunday, James Cameron's 3-D epic earned $75 million for 20th Century Fox, only a 3 percent drop from its opening weekend total of $77.4 million.

"Sherlock Holmes" followed close behind with $65.4 million

  48. 48

Re: perez hizilton – yeah i noticed that to. wtf? and why do you hate avatar so much? you're such a fat fuck you wouldn't know a good movie it it f-ed you in ass.

  49. 49

Why so harsh on Avatar Perez? It was a lovely film, perhaps the best time I ever had at the movies. Plus it did amazing at the box office this weekend, again.

  50. 50

You're a fucking idiot Perez, plain and simple.

  51. 51

Avatar is TRUELY impressive and like nothing I have ever seen before (Digital 3D is the way to go on this movie, period). Get over yourself and stop hating on Avatar - sorry if it's not on the level of Twilight, it actually has some class and intellect behind it!

  52. 52

Could you be any more obvious? You either dont like Avatar, or James Cameron, we get it. Stop making things seem worse than they are.

  53. 53

Yes but over the WEEKEND Avatar ranked first with $75 million and Holmes ranked second with $65.4 million. Avatar kept the top spot despite five new movies opening, only losing 2% of its viewership. Check your facts.

  54. 54

actually, Avatar beat out Sherlock Holmes….$75 Million for Avatar, $66 Million for Holmes. Go see Nikki Finke.

  55. 55

    holmes

  56. 56

I watched Avatar yesterday and all shows were selling out like crazy and I think Avatar is wayyyy better than anything that came out this year :)

  57. 57

Avatar still reigned in the box office over the weekend.

According to studio estimates Sunday, James Cameron's 3-D epic earned $75 million for 20th Century Fox, only a 3 percent drop from its opening weekend total of $77.4 million.

"Sherlock Holmes" followed close behind with $65.4 million, including a record Christmas Day debut of $24.9 million. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" took in $50.2 million.

  58. 58

    Re: Ooh la la
LOL Does that mean it's good/bad?

  59. 59

Been to see Sherlock today with my husband and son and I'm going again next week with my mates. It was a fantastic movie, Downey was fabulous in it, as was Law.

I really hope there's a sequel to this, it was brilliant.

  60. 60

Avatar sucks!!!!! almost sleep the whole movie (as Titanic), the script was stupid most of directors can't write (James don´t be tightfist and pay to a writer)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it was sooooooooooooo slow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…on the other hand the visual effects are the only thing that worth from the film.

  61. 61

I heard Avatar won the weekend gross. Great movie.

  62. 62

Once again you are proved as a lying piece of shit! Avatar remains numebr 1 with $75 million..making over $212 millio in 2 weeks.. You are such a fucking hater. HOW ABOUT PRINTING AN APOLOGY YOU FAT PIECE OF SHIT!

  63. 63

I guess most of you people haven't seen that video of James Cameron calling a man asking for an autograph an a**hole ….

  64. 64

Do you even look at the numbers? The weekend estimates say Avatar came in on top with 75mil with Sherlock Holmes earning 65mil. LOOK IT UP.

  65. 65

i gotta see avatar i feel like i'm really missing out

  66. 66

It only earned 23.5 million X-mas day? Wow, such passive-aggressive bitchery! AVATAR just ONLY just became the highest weekend gross ever this past weekend.

  67. 67

Where the hell do you get your info? EW, RT, IMDB & Boxoffice Mojo report that Sherlock grossed 10 million less than Avatar, with the Chipmunks thirds. Avatar is the numbet #1 movie. 75 million vs 65 million, which is more? Do you need a math lesson Perez?

  68. 68

Sorry, reports have Avatar beating Sherlock Holmes. Want to see both of them.

  69. 69

avatar is really a big hit here in Malaysia…two thumbs up to sherlock holmes n avatar…both were really good movie love it

  70. 70

Avatar has brought in 214 million in 10 days…..so says MSN.COM

  71. 71

just check the box office results. avatar made another 75 million..still number one not sherlock holmes

  72. 72

    BOTH MOVIES WERE AWESOME…

  73. 73

I saw Sherlock Holmes and it was AWESOME! I have a crush on Robert Downey Jr. now. lol

  74. ap076 says – reply to this

    74

James Cameron was at it again. The Oscar-winning sci-fi guru enjoyed his second straight weekend at number one with the 3D epic Avatar which dipped a scant 3% in its sophomore frame to gross an estimated $75M shooting the ten-day total to an eye-popping $212.3M. The Fox blockbuster scored the second best second weekend gross in history trailing just The Dark Knight which followed up its record-breaking $158.4M debut with a 53% drop to $75.2M in its sophomore session in late July 2008. The only other films to gross more than $70M in their second weekends were Shrek 2 with $72.2M in 2004 and Spider-Man with $71.4M in 2002. All three of those films went on to finish north of $400M domestically and Avatar now seems on the same trajectory which would allow it to topple Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to become the top-grossing film released in 2009.
With so many people off from work and school this coming week, Avatar's cume will continue to surge with the quarter-billion mark likely to crumble on Wednesday and the $300M level to be passed on Saturday with much more to come.
The futuristic event film already ranks number seven for 2009 after just ten days and by next weekend it will shove aside Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for the number two slot with its guns aimed squarely at Michael Bay's toy robots.

  75. 75

I'm the king of the worms

  76. 76

Rasputin's Liver #9 Thank you for the props to Mr. Brett. I absolutely fell in love with him and his performance as Sherlock Holmes. Mr. Brett is and will always be (for me) the one true Holmes on screen.

  77. 77

god, you are such a fucking fool. Avatar beat sherlock holmes in the weekend take by 10M you sorry excuse for a entertainment blogger

  78. 78

Perez, why are you continuopusly lying about James Cameron's Avatar?
That is the second week in a row you've posted misinformation to your readers. I don't understand it. You are constantly painting James with your 'Fergie Brush'.

Sherlock Holmes beat out Avatar of FRIDAY ALONE! The weekend belonged to Mr. Cameron (AGAIN), with Avatar suffering a mere 2% drop, taking in a whopping $75m!!! That is absolutely amazing. Avatar so far is exceeding even Fox's projections.

Domestically the film has grossed in excess of $212m. For a film that cost $300m (not $500m as Perez reported) it's domestic take in just 2 weeks is fantastic.

Perez, don't apologize to James Cameron, congratulate him… Because he has done it again.

  79. 79

LMAO! really perez? Reported by 20th Century Fox, AVATAR had a 75 Million dollar weekend. SHERLOCK HOLMES 'only' came in with 65.5 million. AVATAR has made 212 Million dollars domestically and it is expected that the film will easily top 1 Billion dollars worldwide. So, don't apologize to James Cameron. Feel sorry for yourself for not knowing your numbers :-)

  80. 80

Moviegoers brought holiday cheer to Hollywood studios over the weekend setting a record for an overall cume with a massive $265 million total. Leading the way, none other than James Cameron's "Avatar" which made a comeback opposite Friday's winner "Sherlock Holmes" and 20th Century Fox stablemate "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel" for an impressive $75 million weekend and an eye-popping $212.2 million so far. "Avatar" had a nice jump to from $23.5 to $28.5 million from Friday to Saturday, unlike "Holmes" which fell from $24 million to $21 million over the same to time frame.

  81. 81

Perez, you are such an idiot, as of Sunday, 12/27, Avatar has earned over 600 million worldwide, lol. Think before you speak you idiot.

  82. 82

Facts: Avatar earned $75 million in its second weekend, after breaking the US record for December releases in its opening. Since opening 10 days ago, the much-hyped Avatar has brought in $212.3 million in the US and Canada and $467.9 million worldwide.

From boxoffice.com: Avatar is showing amazing staying power. The 20th Century Fox release lost only three percent of its audience from last weekend. James Cameron's gamble is paying off in a huge way.

    1 Avatar $75 (212)
    2 Sherlock Holms $ 65 (65)
    3 Alvin… $ 50,2 (77)

So…..Avatar rulez the chart, so i dont understand ur problem with Avatar or James Cameron……..

  83. 83

avatar has grossed AS OF NOW $615,168,000 it earned 27 million its opening day, i'm pretty sure avatar kicked sherlock's ass. Avatar= best movie ever

  84. 84

Loved Up in the Air-great film! Nine was good for the ten mniutes that Fergie and Cruz were performing. Why did they ever bring that to the screen?-the play was boring!

  85. 85

AVATAR SUCKS WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME WATCHING THAT MOVIE. WORST MOVIE OF THE YEAR !!

  86. 86

I swear Robert gets better looking as he gets older. He cleans up real good. Damn good movie!

  87. 87

…yeah, pretty in pink, i saw that video, and you're misrepresenting the facts just like perez when he says holmes beat out avatar. the guy in the video isn't a "fan," he's a stalker who is currently selling said poster on e-bay…and who cares, anyway? the guy was told no, once, very reasonably, and he still didn't listen, and stayed in cameron's face. i would reacted in the exact same way…f'ker was no fan, he was a leeching a-hole — get your facts straight…

  88. 88

…oops, i guess you posted, "man" not "fan," pretty in pink…not that my previous post is up yet, but, when it is, my apologies for the hasty mistake…

  89. 89

…pretty in pink; i apologized for misreading your post — i misread "fan" for man — and, my retraction was up for about two minutes and disappeared??? hope this one is/stays posted…

  90. 90

It's christmas time. you're not going to take mom and the grandparents to see Avatar are you. no, b/c it's not a holiday movie.
I think they should have released Avatar after new years.

  91. 91

Perez please delete this post and save yourself the embarassment since we all know that Avatar DOMINATED

  92. kenda says – reply to this

    92

Sherlock Holmes rocked…and totally due to Robert Downey Jr. He was a total package of hotness….AND every movie he's been in since his rehab has been really good. I will see ANYTHING Downey does…..oh and you haters….just wait till Ironman 2 comes out this summer…..he'll rock that too.

  93. 93

    avatar!

  94. 94

What are you talking about Perez??? I`ve heard that Avatar is number 1 on the box office and personally that movie was AMAZING!!
