Good for him!

Only a month after the passing of his mother, Tyler Perry is planning on hitting the road with a new play!

After five years of refraining from the stage, Madea's Big Happy Family will open in El Paso, TX on January 4th and make its way around the West Coast, with stops in Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle and Portland.

Will U be checking Perry's new play out?

This man adored his mother. Her funeral was the biggest thing in Louisiana with over $42K being spent on flowers!!! He told the florist "pretend that she was your mother and that money was no object." Congratulations on your new victory, your mother would be proud!

His nostrils are so big you can see that brilliant brain in his head….
      Love his work…..:0)

No, I'd rather see a Eugene O'Neill play or one by Tennesseee Williams. Y'know, real art, real talent.
I'm glad that Mr. Perry is making money, but don't present dreck and promote it as representing our experience or appealing to Black Americans. We're sophisticated enough to know what is genuine and what is broad, overly loud, slapstick and buffoonery.

Re: caroaber – Wow. I think "no" would have sufficed…

I agree - alot of his movies play on stereotypes and these don't help in portraying blacks as intelligent people. I just wish he had something more learned to say with his movies and characters.

@ caroaber While I'm not a fan of his character Medea I understand the overall message that Tyler Perry is trying to promote in his plays. What I appreciate most is that this man is successful because he knows how to market to the masses.

Tennessee Williams and Eugene O'Neill are master playwrights but neither can be herald as someone that can convey the African-American experience better than someone who actually experiences it first hand…and African American. Mr. Perry writes from his personal experiences as an African-American man growing up in the South and the people and events that have molded him into the person that he is.

Of course he could do some overly worked esoteric piece that is lauded by poet laureates and being critically acclaimed as an American masterpiece but what he does is provide theater for those that otherwise might not be into going out and enjoying a play. Maybe through Mr. Perry they'll investigate further and allow their minds to work around pieces such as TW or EO. So don't let your sophistication be mistaken for snobbery. Being open minded is more important than being elites.

I already have the tickets! He'll be here, in NYC, end of January.

To caroaber: What!?! Apparently you never attended a Tyler Perry movie. I go the first week of every new show. Always long lines with about 90% African American attendees. I chuckled when I saw that you prefer Eugene O'Neill and Tennesse Williams and consider that "real art, real talent".

Medea is based on his Mother

"REFRAINING FROM THE STAGE", refrain is the wrong choice of word as it is meant to mean:
To hold oneself back; forbear: :"refrained from swearing".
To restrain or hold back; curb.
One correct way to put it would have been "After a five year ABSENCE from the stage"
How about a 2010 resolution for better spelling, grammar, and word selection?
