Nine Reduces Its Numbers

Sorry, Rob Marshall. They all can't be Oscar winners.

Though it has received five Golden Globe nominations and has done fairly well with critics and audiences, finishing eighth at the box-office last weekend in only its second week of release has forced the Weinstein company to take action.

Now, the musical flick Nine will go from being show in 1,400 screens to about 890 screens.

That's showbiz! See it while it's still in theaters!

HAHA…… it's funny that Fergie is not in the picture ….. like I told my bf yesterday , they didn't want to scare people off by showing her face !!! Its not F.E.R.G.I.E her name its F.U.G.L.Y .

"Nine" is flat-out bad. Day-Lewis is just bad as Italian movie director Fellini. He looks like he's dead. Cruz can't even cough up her stock-in-trade trollop character. Bad material. Bad actors. Bad movie.

Despite a great cast, director, screenplay writers, etc. the movie failed to capture the hearts and minds of the American public. Even with only 1400 theaters it's per screen average last week was a pallid $3000 or so per screen. The movie has made 6.5 million.
I will be curious what the foreign grosses for this movie will be if and when it opens oversees (mojo reports no foreign grosses). Don't count this movie out of the Oscar race yet, remember there are 10 movies nominated for Best Picture this year.

One other point. This film is based on a musical that is 27 years old. The musical in turn is based on a film, that although it is one of the greatest of all time, has been seen by relatively few Americans. Very few Americans indeed would be able to answer the question "What is 8 1/2"?
All around too bad as the musical won the Tony for Best Musical and was nominated for 5 and the 2003 revival won a Tony for Best Musical, Revival. Ciao

I went to see this Dec 19th and was SO excited. Maybe it's me, but it was kind of lack luster. I felt like there was no continuity to the story. Or maybe I just am not that sympathetic to cheaters, so I wasn't feeling the story that much.

Yet I LOVED "Chicago" which was about murderers. It just didn't have the WOW that Chicago or Moulin Rouge did.

    12. 12

since when do awards depend on how many cinemas its shown in?

    13. 13

Looks like it would be fun and sexy but from what everyone's saying….??? I'll wait for the dvd.

Im 99.99999% certain 9 bombed at the box office b/c Kate Hudson is in it. She has that effect on movies…kind of like the "Oprah Effect", but opposite.

Wonderful Movie! I dragged my BF n his other guy friend to go see it but he already said before hand that the movie would suck n that he was gonna leave during the movie to start waiting in line for Sherlock Holmes. But he instead loved the movie! Him and his friend eyes were glued to the screen especially during all the musical numbers!

    17. 17

      …HOLY PHOTOSHOP, BATMAN!

    18. 18

Fergie doesn't even talk in the movie. she plays with sand and looks like trash. The movie is poor at best. I felt the acting and the cast were great, but when it's a bad story, it's a bad story.

    19. 19

PEOPLE WANT TO SEE WEDDING CRASHERS/KNOCKED UP/HANGOVER/THE VIRGIN/ WE WANT TO LAUGH IN NOT SO FUNNY TIMES.DUH…….

      Re: LuvYaAlways
RED FLAG ALERT. Your boyfriend and his male "friend", LOVED the musical numbers???

    21. 21

      Re: gages_fatuglyold_lazymomma
Actually it was probably that BIG DYKE, Nicole Kidman's fault!!!

    22. 22

      Re: bigray – HAHAHAHA!

    23. 23

DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. AT ALL COSTS, PLEASE, DO NOT GO SEE THIS MOVIE IN THEATRES. DO NOT EVER SEE THIS MOVIE. THE ONLY GOOD PART WAS FERGIE'S SONG, AND SHE'S NOT EVEN ON THE POSTER.

    24. 24

Who would go and see this when Sherlock is out - Robert Downey Jr, Mmmmmm he's fantastic in that movie.

    25. 25

I just don't know why anyone would see this. To see if these actors can sing? The vocoder took away that charm. To see the costumes? Vogue already did.

    26. 26

Its just not good, kept waiting for the story to start…self indulgent male crap…but, the women were beautiful/great, but what is with nicole kidman's face?

    27. 27

All the ladies were great including Fergie.
Daniel Day Lewis…horrible!!!…was ok a shame
was fabulous on Bway saw it on Bway with the great Raul Julia!!!
didn't transalate to the screen as well

    28. 28

      omg so crazy

    29. 29

I would rather poke my eyes out with skewers and deafen myself with an ipod than inflict that shit on myself.

    30. 30

Re: megmeg88 – Did you follow the story of NINE? Fergie is supposed to look like trash, she plays a hooker.

    31. 31

      Done fairly well with critics?
      Which ones?
The critics have almost universally eviscerated this sad excuse for a movie.
I think I have read perhaps one review that was above a D-.

    32. 32

I SAW IT THIS WEEKEND AND IT WAS DISAPPOINTING AND BORING….I WENT TO SEE THE MUSICAL NUMBERS AND THOSE WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MOVIE .MARION COITILLARD GIVES THE BEST PERFORMANCE OF ALL THE ACTORS…JUDIE DENCH WAS GREAT AS ALWAYS (IN FACT HER MUSICAL NUMBER WAS MY MOST FAVORITE !) ALSO PENELOPE CRUZ WAS GOOD…HOWEVER NICOLE KIDMAN WAS BLAND AND DANIEL DAY LEWIS WAS MEH…I CANT BELIEVE FERGIE GAINED WEIGHT FOR SUCH A SMALL ROLE..THERE WAS NO NEED FOR KATE HUDSONS ROLE BUT SHE ALSO HAD A GOOD NUMBER…

    33. 33

so why isnt this a failure like avatar was….according to you?

    34. 34

Re: tracker – what movie is the virgin?

    35. 35

I guess We all expected more the movie has a good cast I like Nicole in musicals, Penelope was good. the blond girl is Ok (Kate) but not good. Maybe too many actresses in a single movie the choreography sucks. Fergie good but her appearance was so short. It was like so many small pieces put together but the result wasn't good :( What a shame and what a waste. Chicago was great what happened whit this movie? It's was kind of boring :(

    36. 36

SAW IT TONIGHT - IT'S FABULOUS! BELLISSIMO!

    37. 37

Fergie was better than I expected, and the other women were good, but it was just a play put on the big screen, probably best left to the stage.

    38. 38

Hmm. Interesting. By your math, a fruity musical finishing 8th did "fairly well", but Avatar making $77M in its SECOND weekend is a bomb? Here's a math equation even you can solve: Fuck + You.
