Something Creepy, Spooky, & Kooky Heads To Broadway

Is there no one left that wants to write an original Broadway musical anymore? Has inspiration been lost to the almighty $$$?
Since Broadway has been inundated with revivals and movie musical remakes, it was only a matter of time before producers went after 1960s sitcoms for material.
We've just learned that The Addams Family is making its way to Broadway in April, after a limited release in Chicago. The reviews came in mixed and most agreed that the show requires some major tweeks before it comes to Broadway.
But it is coming and now we have word that leading the rework will be Jerry Zaks, mastermind behind the recent revivals of La Cage aux Folles and Little Shop of Horrors.
Our instincts tell us that this could be a flop, but there are two things keeping it afloat. Their names are Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth, who are starring as leads Gomez and Morticia Addams.
That's a Broadway royalty pairing we can not ignore!
Will U go see the show in the spring?

NO THEY DIDN'T….
I love the Addams family! Munsters are better though.
Randy Quaid's wife could play Wednesday Addams… she's kooky and could use the money.
lol i would love to see that
TAF will last three weeks in The Big Apple. It's too bad to fix. Story, get this, is: Wednesday finds a boyfriend. Lane is 200 pounds over wieght. Neuwirth thinks she's still in "Chicago". Blood bath of Jr. High sex jokes. Not one inspired second. By April, 'The Munsters' will be written in.
Just saw this Saturday in Chicago. The music was just 'eh', but the story line and actors were VERY entertaining!!
Just saw this in Chicago on Saturday. The music was just 'eh' but the story line and actors were VERY entertaining!
i hear mario is going to try out for fester, gonna have to drop a ton of weight first, but good luck. you sure do have the face for it
i saw it in chicago and it was great!
you JUST learned about this? This has been going on for months and months and months!! PS…this IS an original musical. It's based on a tv show/film, but all the music is new. you (or whoever is writing this for you) clearly have no idea about theatre.
I think this could be REALLY good. hope they fix whatever is wrong. I have never been to a Broadway show ( the horrors of it; I know!) but I would love to see this!
love the Addams Family
hell, yes!!! No goddamned way on the world the Fletchers would miss this interesting creation.
Love them both, but it's hard to imagine Nathan Lane as a true Gomez.
…Angelina and Brad? Oops. wrong post. so sorry.
Re: Canadiana* – …excellent point. I will personally super glue pig tails on that freak show!
Yeah, so maybe if you'd actually researched this before you posted it you would see that it's not based on the old 60's sitcom. It's based on the original Charles Addams New Yorker comics.
Idiot.
Re: Curious Yellow – You do know the Gomez in the comics was heavy set too right? Nathan Lane was cast in a size appropriate role.
Re: karencarpenter – Cheers hun ! And Happy New Year !!
The Addams Family is from a New Yorker cartoon dating back to 1938. That's a lot older than a "1960s sitcom."
They're actually doing the pre-Broadway run in Chicago. I saw it a week ago, and its actually really well written, music-wise at least (the chorus parts are amazing). Nathan Lane was amazing as Gomez, as was Krysta Rodriguez as Wednesday, but I think Bebe left a little something to be desired. It'll be interesting to see how it does on Broadway…
From left to right :
Mario's mother
Mario's sister
Uncle Poofter-Bum
Mario's father
Aunt Poofter-Bum
Mario (fondling some runaway)
Since this is a play - not a movie - it would not have been in 'limited release'.
It was a 'limited run'.
Who the hell writes these posts?
wrong again, its based on the original comics not the sitcom, the only thing at all used from the sitcom is the theme, u lose and fail
BEBE IS MY NEW AUNT!!! You did a post on her getting married to my uncle Chris over the summer, i couldn't believe it, you even mentioned his wine company Destino lol
My Gma is also the principal from Uncle Buck, among other films lol
We have our tickets already! Hope they don't cancel-Cirque de S. just canceled their showing of Banana Speil for Feburary-for a later date-have to get our money back on that one.
Wow Perez this has been years in the making. First off This is based off the original comic strip made by Charles Addams before the TV show. The TV show was based of Charles Addams characters. second off. Broadway and movies have been adapting things from comics, old movies, books, plays, musicals, short story's and son since the beginning of film making and broadway. This is nothing new! Annie was based off of a 1930's comic as well! get over and stop acting like this is something new people. Its if the musical is good and entertaining is what's important.
Ok Bebe is a BRILLIANT choice for Morticia!! Nathan Lane is obviously Mr. Broadway himself, so I applaud that choice as well. Although perhaps Antonio Banderas would be good as well? He can sing fairly well and has that whole smoltry, lethario thing going on…
Saw it in Chicago, center stage-second row, and was impressed. I agree with tannymills, however. Bebe's performance was just ok. I was distracted by her singing voice. The actress that plays Wednesday was incredible and Nathan Lane was as well. It was worth seeing for sure.
I dont like Broadway shows at all but i'd totally go to see this, i was an Adams family fanatic when i was a little kid and I still am today…..i make myself sound so old…..
AHH! I really want to see it!
you just learned?? where the hell have you been ?? i have known about it for months now…..geez , get with it miss thang
I saw this months ago in Chicago, so this is not new!! It was great. The background changes were amazing, the music and acting were superb, especially the actor who plays Wednesday. There were a lot of sexual innuendos that had the crowd roaring in laughter. All in all a great play, well worth the price.
Don't get me wrong, I love Nathan….but him as Gomez???? Really??? Ugh….not right casting for him on that at all. Def could see Bebe though. Although still not sure if this should be a musical either.
Re: blahhhhhhh – Just because he is "size appropriate" doesn't mean that he was cast correctly. Just sayin.
It's a FUN show. Does need a little tweeking, but it will be a HIT on B'way. Star power is HUGE, and there are some great lines, and good gags. The puppetry work is GREAT. Gonna be good. See it! Don't hate on it until you give it a chance.
The Addams Family originally appeared as a series of single panel cartoons, published in The New Yorker magazine between 1938 and creator Charles Addams' 1988 death.
The two season TV series came after nearly 30 years of the cartoons, which in turn went on to out last the series by another 20 years.
Casting idea, Perez as Uncle Fester. Right size, hairline almost there, and you would only need to move the lightbulb from up your ass (You know what they say is that a lightbulb up your ass or your colon has just has a great idea) to your mouth.
Re: MyOpinionOnly – Well, I haven't seen it yet, but reviews mentioning his performance so far had been mostly good. I was just commenting that a lot of people are saying he was poorly cast since he isn't 'attractive' or 'fit' enough, though looks wise he actually is appropriately cast.
I bought my tickets way long ago! Can't wait to see Bebe and Lane!
sounds good to me….bring it on!!!!
Wow, think even people who leave comments need to do their research. The musical opened Nov. 13th in Chicago (not MONTHS ago). I saw the show the weekend before Thanksgiving…it was just meh. I was so excited to see Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth but they can only do so much, needs a lot of re-working.
Saw it opening weekend in Chicago. I sure as hell hope they make some tweeks….it wasn't that great. And as much as I love Bebe, her voice wasn't as impressive as I wanted it to be. And there wasn't any one song that really stood out.
I also saw this in Chicago and have tickets to see it in NY. It was definitely a great show. I'm sure it will be a Broadway hit. Yes it needs some tweaking but that's what an out-of-city preview is for. The set movements and puppets were FANTASTIC!! Definitely go see it on Broadway…it will be a HIT!
I saw it in Chicago and it was horrible! Nathan Lane wasn't there that night, but the replacement was good… but they just couldnt make up for the AWFUL story line.
how suitable. broadway is DEAD, with all these 'remakes' of movies and tv.
so go fuck the dead, addams family. no, i will not pay or watch the making of
special on tv.
Sat in the front row in the center orchestra in Chicago and was extremely disappointed in The Addams Family production. The story line, the music, and the stars, Bebe & Nathan, were terrible! It was a complete bore! The only decent parts were the costumes & the sets. Nathan Lane was sweating and huffing and puffing so much, I was afraid he was going to have a heart attack. Don't waste your money on this pathetic show unless they change the story line, the songs, and the stars!! I really don't see them being able to change the show enough for it to survive on Broadway! I wish Antonio Banderas was in it; he would be wonderful!
Re: LizardKinG –
I saw the show in Chicago. As some have mentioned here, it is based on the Charles Addams cartoons - not a tv show or movie. It is an original musical with an original book and score and it is fantastic. Very funny. Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth are great - they actually look exactly like the original cartoons - and the guy who plays Fester is great, but Jackie Hoffman as Grandma steals every scene she is in. She is hysterical. I actually think you'd like this show Perez, so check it out in NYC.
