Who were the big winners of 2009 in the music industry and who failed miserably???
Among the top tier of '09, we've got all the usual suspects - Lady GaGa (selling 2.3 million), Taylor Swift (5.3 mil, including record sales of 2008) and SuBo, who can't be torn down from her #1 spot on the charts, selling 2.9 million records!
But for every big album released, there's a bomb right below it!
Britney's greatest hits collection only managed to sell a measly 90,000 copies, but Mariah's numbers are even more embarassing!
Mimi only sold 375,000 copies of Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel in '09, even though her 2008 release, E=MC2, sold 463,000 copies in its first week.

mariah carey still holds the top spot for the song of this decade with "we belong together" and for the 90's she also has the top song with "one sweet day" and memoirs although not a big seller is a really good album, her label believes in the material so much that they are releasing 2 remix albums based on memoirs so there!

I feel as if this list is inaccurate.
Sure, Taylor Swift sold a lot of albums but that's included with her 2008 sales and I love her and all but there are fans of every one of those albums/bands/singers that you put in the "disappointing" section and all of those fans feel that those albums were amazing and you must include that we're in a tight economy now and sorry not everyone has enough money to spend on some of their favorite artists and music piracy is growing among our day and age. The artists worked hard and the increased sales of Michael Jackson could be included in the fact that not everyone could buy their favorite artist's albums because they were buying Michael Jackson ones. You're completely insensitive to what is going on.

Bullshit on Britney, Madonna and Janet being "bombs". They released Greatest Hit complimations not new albums. All their fans already have those songs and all 3 od them did bascially nothing to promote those cds and the singles "3, Celebration and Make Me" we just so-so. I can see how Rihanna, Glambert and Mariah bombed being all-new material but the 3 dance divas…no way.

David Archuleta sold 209000 with NO promo and it's a very small budget Christmas cd! It did GREAT! The cd made good profit and allowed David to do his 5th tour of 2009 and earned him another truckload of CASH! He's already a millionare and still a teenager, he had an amazing 2009! Cant't wait to hear his new cd in 2010! Also the Jonas are doing fine, thank you.

Anyway…Madonna's Celebration is one of the top selling CD's worldwide!!! Which is saying A LOT because its a Greatest Hits and they generally don't sell well so that's a job well done Madonna! It even sold twice as much world wide as the monkey face pig nose Mariah!
Plus how are you going to say a Greatist Hit is a bomb?? It's not like an album of original material.
Mariah's numbers are REALLY SAD!!!! And she did all that damn promotion too yet the monkey face fell flat on her chunky ass!

I don't agree with this list at all. Of course albums that have been out for two years are going to have bigger numbers than one's released a month ago. You can't compare them like that. A lot of the albums in the disappointing list shouldn't be there. Are you going to call them hits next year when they have sales over a million? Anything can be called a hit or a bomb if you compare them the wrong way.
Sting and David who have Christmas albums shouldn't be compared to other albums. Christmas albums, unless you're Bocelli or Groban (and are you going to call Bocelli a bomb because he sold less than half of what Groban did his year? of course not) aren't sold the same way as non holiday albums. They don't get promoted, radio play or even included in the "new release" sections or store ads. 450,000 for Stings album is great, not disappointing and 209,000 for David's lower budget album is great and was very close to Jive's sales goals for it. It's certainly not a bomb if it makes a lot of profit.
I agree that some of the albums on the bomb list, but again, some of these have only been out for a couple of months and they may end up selling well. You can't say an album is a bomb when it's only in it's first stages of selling, esp if they have a song gaining airplay on top 40 like Kris Allen's.
I also don't think greatest hits collections should be included in this list. They don't sell the same way as an all new material album and they certainly don't cost as much to make as an all new material album so they don't have to sell as much to make a profit for their labels.
I think an album is only a bomb if it loses money. You don't know the background of these albums, like how much they cost to produce and promote, so you shouldn't be making a list like this.

She sold 2.3 million copies in the US and 8 million worldwide.
Britney's Circus album was released November 28, 2008.
Britney sold 2.6 million in the US and 5 million worldwide.
Mind you, Lady Gaga has been doing much more promotion, TV appearances, Award Shows etc.
Britney's Circus album should be on the Blockbuster list.

Let's see…Sting puts out a X-mas CD that's most likely certified Gold right now, and when Xmas albums are a dime a dozen, yet his sells 450K, and that's disappointing? Streisand sold 450,000, but her albums ALWAYS go quietly gold or platinum without much fanfare, videos, hit singles…that fact that she's still doing it after 47 years is NOT disappointing.
And the people bitching about who sold more than who…just b/c your favorite artist didn't make the BLOCKBUSTER cut, it doesn't really reflect bad on them…just tells you what the general public is listenting to…20 years ago, the blockbuster albums were being released by Michael Bolton, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Paula Abdul, and Milli Vanilli.

It reveals that even though Lady GarGoyle toured practically non stop with not one but two tours, she still didn't make the top 50 touring acts. DESPITE all the HYPE and rumours, her shows ARE NOT making money. Less than 300k per show TOTAL GROSS, with ticket prices averaging less than $40, and on average plays at meager 4,000 seat venuses. AND on top of all that, they have NOT all sold out. Another HILARIOUS DISASTER for Lady GarGoyle.

You can't jsut sneak in 'includes 2008 sales' for your favourite artists, or compare albums like Lady Gaga's album (which has been out ALL YEAR) to albums like Shakira (which has been out under TWO MONTHS).

Your facts aren't exactly straight either. Just because an album is certified Gold, it doesn't mean it SOLD 500K..it just means it SHIPPED that many. CELEBRATION has actually sold less 500K in the US. And what do you mean hardly no promotion? She did not do just one but two versions of a video for "Celebration," ran a TV ad campaign for the album ("34 songs that changed the world"), and even had a poster up in Times Square. Not to mention, her various fan websites were promoting the album about 6 months before its release. You can't get any better promotion than that.

The record company can promote an album for an artist while the artist does NOTHING. WB promoted the hell out of CELEBRATION (TV ads, billboards, etc., music videos) If you think a company spending millions of dollars on expensive TV spots isn't real promotion, then you are the idiot.
