Once In A Blue Moon!

Stargazers, be prepared for a special treat on New Years Eve!

The night of December 31st, 2009 will see its 13th full moon of the year, also known as a Blue Moon.

While there are usually only 12 full moons in a calendar year, 2009 marks the first year with 13 full moons since 1990 and it won't happen again until 2028!

And for all of you residing in Europe and Asia, you'll be privy to a partial lunar eclipse on the 31st as well. The eclipse is said to take place at 7:23 pm (GMT) when "the moon will pass partly into shadow" by the earth itself.

Get out your telescopes!

      Happy New YEar!!!!

There are always 13 full moons in a year, so it's not the first year since 1990 with a blue/harvest moon, it is however the first year since 1990 that the blue/harvest moon will be on new years eve

      Goodness this is old news.

    4. 4

Actually, a Blue Moon is when a full moon occurs twice in one month (about every 2 1/2 years or so).

A Blue Moon that falls on New Years Eve is rare.

You have your facts wrong AGAIN, Perez. A blue moon is when it appears twice in a month. This isn't the first blue moon since 1990, it's the first blue moon on a New Years since 1990, and that won't happen again until nearly 2030. When you steal other news sources, at least get the facts right. Also, it won't be a 2009 Blue Moon for those in other parts of the world.

Technically speaking, stargazers prefer to have a moon-less night. Too much light.

Yay a smurf will be born tonight!!!

B-ritt04, a harvest moon is not the same as a blue moon. Harvest moon occurs in September.

You really could fix your error here, nobody would mind.

    23. 23

You have to choose between not knowing anything about writing and not knowing anything about astronomy. You can't showcase both in the same post. There was a blue moon two years ago, back when you were 300lbs.

    24. 24

Obviously no one should expect any kind of actual facts from someone as educationally challenged as yourself, but for those who expect an actual blue moon. It won't be. Blue that is. Google it and you will find an actual explanation.

I saw a sample of this last night, and a genuine and spectacular moon dog it was. Thanks for the reminder to take a peek again tonight.
